Epistle

§ 311-ctrHebrews 5:4-10
§ 246Philippians 3:20-4:3

The book gives no rule for choosing. It prints these Epistles for this class separated by “or” and says nothing about which to take. All are kept; the choice is the celebrant’s.

Chant

The Commons service — the class’s own, not the day’s. Sung where the day prints no propers of its own: 0 of the 2 dated days below. 1 print their own propers, and those are what is sung; on 1 the Festal Cycle appoints a different Epistle that day.

Prokeimenon, Tone 7

Precious in the sight of the Lord / is the death of His Saints!

Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all His bounty to me?

Alleluia, Tone 2

Verse: Thy priests shall clothe themselves with righteousness, and Thy Saints shall rejoice!

Communion Hymn

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous! Praise befits the just!

Where these Epistles are read — 2

Reading a class’s Epistle is not the same as belonging to the class. The Apostol appoints §233 on 18 August because that day’s service is copied from December 10, not because Florus and Laurus are Confessors.
