Commentary from 1 father
And I will send forth against Babylon spoilers, and they shall spoil her, and shall ravage her land. Woe to Babylon round about her in the day of her affliction.
καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ εἰς Βαβυλῶνα ὑβριστάς, καὶ καθυβρίσουσιν αὐτὴν καὶ λυμανοῦνται τὴν γῆν αὐτῆς· οὐαὶ ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα κυκλόθεν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακώσεως αὐτῆς.

Let the archer bend his bow, and him that has armour put it on: and spare ye not her young men, but destroy ye all her host.

3–4(Vers. 3, 4.) What Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, brought from this place, he also brought to Babylon. And I will bring back Jehoiachin, the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who went to Babylon, to this place, declares the Lord. For I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. Regarding these matters, the LXX translated: Jehoiachin and the exiles of Judah, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon, summarizing the meaning of the Hebrew truth rather than giving word-for-word translations. However, Ananias, who at that time seemed to be a prophet to the people, promised not only to bring back the vessels, but also to restore King Jechoniah to Jerusalem, and to break the yoke of the king of Babylon, that is, to destroy his empire. And this would not yet be accomplished for another two years, in order to increase the greatness of the joy and to enhance the nearness of the promised time.

And slain men shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and men pierced through shall fall without it.

For Israel and Juda have not been forsaken of their God, of the Lord Almighty; whereas their land was filled with iniquity against the holy things of Israel.

5–6(Vers. 5, 6.) And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Ananias, in the eyes of the priests and in the eyes of all the people who stood in the house of the Lord. And Jeremiah the prophet said: Amen, let the Lord do so. May the Lord fulfill your words that you prophesied; so that the vessels may be brought back to the house of the Lord, and all the exile of Babylon to this place. He wishes to become what the false prophet lies about, for this is what Amen signifies: a word that the Lord often uses in the Gospel: Amen, amen I say to you (John 5:19). And he desires, for the prosperity of things, to speak more kindly than strictly. Hence another prophet bears witness, saying: O that I were not a man having the spirit, and spoke rather falsehood (Micah 2:11). On the contrary, Jonah is distressed why he lied, and is reproved by the Lord, that it is more profitable for prophets to speak falsehood than the multitude of such ruin (Jonah 3). And lest he seem to approve the prophecy of a false prophet, he asserts the truth under the example of others lying without injury.

Flee ye out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every one his soul: and be not overthrown in her iniquity; for it is the time of her retribution from the Lord; he is rendering to her a recompence.

Jeremiah wishes “May the Lord do” what the false prophet said falsely, for this is what “Amen” signifies, a word that the Lord often employed in the Gospel: “Amen, amen, I say to you.” He also has greater desire that prosperity is realized than that the truth is told. Another prophet testifies in this connection, saying, “O that I not be a man who has the Spirit and prefers to speak falsely!” Unlike Jeremiah, however, Jonah is saddened that he should tell a falsehood, in response to which the Lord proves that a false prophecy is better than the destruction of so great a multitude of people. Lest it seem that he was approving the prediction of the false prophet, he then speaks the truth by using an example from others, without utilizing harmful deception: “Yet, hear this word that I speak in your hearing and in that of all the people. The prophets who preceded me and you from the beginning also prophesied many things for the earth and for great kingdoms concerning war and disease and famine. The prophet who foretold peace, when it comes to pass, will be known as the prophet whom the Lord sent in truth.”

Babylon has been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, causing all the earth to be drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore they were shaken.

7–9(Vers. 7 seqq.) Nevertheless, listen to this word that I speak in your ears and in the ears of all the people: The prophets who were before me and you from the beginning, prophesied about many lands and great kingdoms, about battles, affliction, and famine. The prophet who prophesied peace, when his word comes, the prophet whom the Lord has sent in truth will be known. Jeremiah could have said to Ananiah: You speak falsely, you deceive the people, you are not a prophet but a false prophet. But if he had said so, the false prophet could also have retorted the same against Jeremiah, so he does no wrong. And he is speaking as if to a prophet. Not only, he says, am I a prophet and you, but there were many others before you and me, among whom were Isaiah, Hosea, Joel, and Amos, and the rest. They prophesied, he says, against many lands and not insignificant kingdoms, but great ones, announcing war and adversity to them, and announcing a scarcity of all things. And on the other hand, there were others who promised peace and prosperity. Both opinions, not through flattery or lies, but proven by the outcome of events. Therefore, following the example of others, Ananias speaks of himself, so that when the end of things comes, the truth of the prophets may be revealed. The Lord himself also spoke through Moses (Deut. 23), that the end of prophecy may be shown. And it should be noted that he does not threaten or intimidate, but confidently rebukes the liar with the truth, and postpones it for the future, so that those who hear may await the outcome of events.

And Babylon is fallen suddenly, and is broken to pieces: lament for her; take balm for her deadly wound, if by any means she may be healed.

We tried to heal Babylon, but she was not healed: let us forsake her, and depart every one to his own country: for her judgment has reached to the heaven, it has mounted up to the stars.

The Lord has brought forth his judgment: come, and let us declare in Sion the works of the Lord our God.

10–11(Verse 10, 11) And Ananias the prophet took a chain (or a yoke, which in Hebrew is called Mutoth) from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, and broke it. And Ananias said in the presence of all the people, saying: Thus says the Lord: I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, within two years from the necks of all nations. And Jeremiah went his way (The Vulgate adds prophet). The Seventy did not transfer two years. Moreover, they did not call Ananias a prophet, lest they seem to be calling someone a prophet who was not a prophet. It is as if not many things are said in the holy Scriptures, according to the opinion of that time in which the events are recounted, and not according to what the truth of the matter contained. Finally, even Joseph is called the father of the Lord in the Gospel, and Mary herself, who knew that she had conceived by the Holy Spirit, and she had responded to the angel: 'How will this be, since I do not know a man?' (Luke 1:34). He speaks to the Son: Son, what have you done to us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in sorrow. At the same time, the prudence of Jeremiah, and humility, and patience must be considered. The false prophet does wrong things, and crushes the snatched club from his neck, which he certainly could not do with an iron one. He is silent, and disguises his pain: for the Lord had not yet revealed to him what he should speak. As the holy Scripture shows, prophets do not speak by their own will alone, but by the will of the Lord, especially about the future, of which only God has knowledge. He left, he said, and went on his way, as if defeated, and fulfilling that prophecy: I have become like a deaf man, and like a man who does not have reproofs in his mouth.

10–11The Septuagint does not translate “two years,” nor does it call Hananiah a “prophet,” lest it appear to name someone a prophet who was in fact no prophet, as if not many persons in sacred Scripture were named in accordance with the opinion of the time in which they lived or according to the truth of the matter. But Joseph is called the father of the Lord. And Mary, who knew that she had conceived by the Holy Spirit (responding to the angel, “How can this be, since I have never known a man?”), asked her son, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Your father and I have been looking for you desperately.” The prudence, humility and patience of Jeremiah must also be considered. When the pseudo-prophet damaged and broke the yoke around Jeremiah’s neck, which he was not able to do with iron, Jeremiah remained silent and concealed his pain. For what he should say was not yet revealed to him by the Lord, so that sacred Scripture would demonstrate tacitly that a prophet never speaks only on his own decision but also by the will of the Lord, most especially regarding future events, which are known to God alone. Jeremiah departed, it says, and went on his way as though he were well, thus fulfilling the prophecy: “I have become like a person who hears nothing and has no rebukes in his mouth.”
Six Books on Jeremiah 5:60.2-4
10–14About four hundred years have passed since the preaching of Christ burst on the world, and during that time in which his robe has been torn by countless heresies, almost the whole body of error has been derived from the Chaldaean, Syriac and Greek languages. Basilides, the master of licentiousness and the grossest sensuality, after the lapse of so many years and like a second Euphorbus, was changed by transmigration into Jovinian, so that the Latin tongue might have a heresy of its own. Was there no other province in the whole world to receive the gospel of pleasure and into which the serpent might insinuate itself, except that which was founded by the teaching of Peter, on the rock Christ? Idol temples had fallen before the standard of the cross and the severity of the gospel. Now, on the contrary, lust and gluttony endeavor to overthrow the solid structure of the cross. And so God says by Isaiah, “O my people, they which bless you cause you to err, and trouble the paths of your feet.” Also by Jeremiah, “Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and save every one his life,” and do not believe the false prophets who say, “Peace, peace, and there is no peace,” who are always repeating, “The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.” “Your prophets have foreseen false and foolish things for you. They have not exposed your iniquity in order to call you to repentance. They devour God’s people like bread. They have not called on God. Jeremiah announced the captivity and was stoned by the people. Hananiah, the son of Azzur, broke the bars of wood for the present but was preparing bars of iron for the future. False prophets always promise pleasant things and please for a time. Truth is bitter, and those preaching it are filled with bitterness. For with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth the Lord’s Passover is kept, and it is eaten with bitter herbs.
Against Jovinianus 2.37
10–14(Ver. 2 and following) And the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Ananias the prophet broke the chain (or yoke) from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying: Go and tell Ananias, this is what the Lord says: You have broken the wooden chains (or yokes), and I will make iron yokes in their place. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I have put an iron yoke on the neck of all these nations, so they will serve Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon. And what follows: 'And they shall serve him, and the beasts of the earth I have given to him. But in the present place, according to the Septuagint, Ananias the prophet is not written, and in the following, lest they should seem to call a false prophet a prophet. But what about the Hebrew truth? After Jeremiah the prophet went on his way and swallowed up the injury in silence, the word of the Lord came to him, so that he would not speak in his own words to the false prophet boasting in lies; but he should say: thus says the Lord: even though Ananias, breaking the wooden yoke, spoke with the same authority in the presence of the Lord: thus says the Lord.' For falsehood always imitates the truth. And that which it has brought in: You have shattered wooden forks, and instead of them have made iron chains, shows this, that, rejecting the lesser punishment, it was for the sake of a greater penalty among the people. The allegorical interpreter also raves in this passage, calling the wooden forks and chains, ethereal and airy bodies, namely, of demons and adverse powers. But the wooden forks or iron chains, are our grosser bodies, which are woven together with nerves and bones and flesh and veins, so that those who do not wish to undergo lesser tortures for the quality of their sin may be condemned to the chains of our bodies; and they may endure the wailing of infancy, the bonds of swaddling clothes, and filth; and may serve the devil, the king of Babylon, that is, of this world, as the Scripture says: The world is set in the wicked one (1 John 5:19), with the beasts of the earth, which are linked to the bodies of brute animals. An uneducated handler compelled me, and a follower of Grunnius' slander openly presents the faults of others, which I previously spoke of with pretense, abandoning the discretion of the reader.

Prepare the arrows; fill the quivers: the Lord has stirred up the spirit of the king of the Medes: for his wrath is against Babylon, to destroy it utterly; for it is the Lord’s vengeance, it is the vengeance of his people.

For the Lord has sworn by his arm, saying, I will fill thee with men as with locusts; and they that come down shall cry against thee.

The Lord made the earth by his power, preparing the world by his wisdom, by his understanding he stretched out the heaven.

15–17When Jeremiah admonishes him, saying, “Listen, Hananiah, the Lord did not send you,” he omits the title “prophet,” for how could he call him a prophet who refused to be sent by the Lord? But the truth and order of history is preserved, as we said above, not according to what was but according to what was thought to be at the time. He says, in effect, “You have deceived the people with a falsehood, to prevent them from agreeing with the judgment of God. Hence, you know that this will be the year you die.” But if, when we die, we are liberated from the prison of the body, according to that testimony that has been badly misinterpreted by heretics, “Free my soul from this prison,” how is the death of a pseudo-prophet now imposed as a punishment? It also must be observed, however, that Jeremiah suffered injury from the false prophet and remained silent, the word of the Lord not yet having come to him. Afterwards, however, when sent by the Lord, he boldly convicted him of lying and announced his imminent death. And because he died in the seventh month, which was always customarily understood to represent “rest,” due to the significance of the number, perhaps they were deceived that he died in the seventh month, so that he would be liberated from the evils of the body according to that passage they proffer from Scripture: “Death gives rest to a person.” But we know that the bodies of believers are temples of God, if the Holy Spirit still dwells within them.

15–17(Verse 5 onwards) And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Hananiah: Listen, Hananiah: The Lord did not send you, and yet you have made this people trust in a lie. Therefore, thus says the Lord: Behold, I will send (or cast) you away from the face of the earth, you will die this year. And what follows: Because you have spoken against the Lord. And Hananiah the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month, which is not mentioned in the Septuagint. For as much as they have set him forth above: He died in the seventh month. And this Ananias is not spoken of in the Septuagint as a prophet, though the Holy Scripture of the Hebrews calls him a prophet, even though Jeremiah accuses him, saying: Hear, Ananias, the Lord has not sent you, yet thou have prophesied. For how could he call him a prophet, whom he denied to be sent by the Lord? But the truth and order of the history is preserved, as we have said, not according to what it was, but according to what it was thought to be at that time. You deceived, he says, the people with a lie, so that they would not submit to the judgments of God. Therefore, you know that you will die this year. When we die, we are released from the prisons of the body, according to that testimony, which heretics interpret wrongly: Bring my soul out of prison (Ps. 141:8): so how is death now imposed as a punishment on false prophets? But in this place it should be noted that Jeremiah, after suffering injury from a false prophet, and before receiving a direct message from the Lord, remains silent; later, however, sent by the Lord, he boldly accuses the liar and announces his impending death. And that he who usually translates the seventh month is said to rest under this number, perhaps they falsely claim that he died in the seventh month so that he may be freed from the evils of the body, according to what they quote from the writing. Death is rest for a man. But we know that the bodies of believers are temples of God, if indeed the Holy Spirit dwells in them (Sirach 22:11).

At his voice he makes a sound of water in the heaven, and brings up clouds from the extremity of the earth; he makes lightnings for rain, and brings light out of his treasures.
εἰς φωνὴν ἔθετο ἦχος ὕδατος ἐν οὐρανῷ καὶ ἀνήγαγε νεφέλας ἀπ’ ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς, ἀστραπὰς εἰς ὑετὸν ἐποίησε καὶ ἐξήγαγε φῶς ἐκ θησαυρῶν αὐτοῦ.
Тогѡ̀ ра́ди си́це речѐ гдⷭ҇ь: сѐ, а҆́зъ ѿпꙋщꙋ́ тѧ ѿ лица̀ землѝ, въ се́мъ лѣ́тѣ ᲂу҆́мреши, ꙗ҆́кѡ на гдⷭ҇а (бг҃а) глаго́лалъ є҆сѝ.
Every man has completely lost understanding; every goldsmith is confounded because of his graven images: for they have cast false gods, there is no breath in them.
ἐματαιώθη πᾶς ἄνθρωπος ἀπὸ γνώσεως, κατῃσχύνθη πᾶς χρυσοχόος ἀπὸ τῶν γλυπτῶν αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ψευδῆ ἐχώνευσαν, οὐκ ἔστι πνεῦμα ἐν αὐτοῖς·
И҆ ᲂу҆́мре а҆на́нїа лжепроро́къ въ се́мъ лѣ́тѣ мцⷭ҇а седма́гѡ.
They are vain works, objects of scorn; in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
μάταιά ἐστιν, ἔργα μεμωκημένα, ἐν καιρῷ ἐπισκέψεως αὐτῶν ἀπολοῦνται.
Not such is Jacob’s portion; for he that formed all things, he is his inheritance; the Lord is his name.
οὐ τοιαύτη μερὶς τῷ ᾿Ιακώβ, ὅτι ὁ πλάσας τὰ πάντα αὐτός ἐστι κληρονομία αὐτοῦ, Κύριος ὄνομα αὐτῷ. -
Thou scatterest for me the weapons of war: and I will scatter nations by thee, and will destroy kings by means of thee.
Διασκορπίζεις σύ μοι σκεύη πολέμου, καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ ἔθνη καὶ ἐξαρῶ ἐκ σοῦ βασιλεῖς
And by thee I will scatter the horse and his rider; and by thee I will scatter chariots and them that ride in them.
καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ ἵππον καὶ ἐπιβάτην αὐτοῦ καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ ἅρματα καὶ ἀναβάτας αὐτῶν
And by thee I will scatter youth and maid; and by thee I will scatter man and woman.
καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ νεανίσκον καὶ παρθένον καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ ἄνδρα καὶ γυναῖκα
And by thee I will scatter the shepherd and his flock; and by thee I will scatter the husbandman and his husbandry; and by thee I will scatter leaders and the captains.
καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ ποιμένα καὶ τὸ ποίμνιον αὐτοῦ καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ γεωργὸν καὶ τὸ γεώργιον αὐτοῦ καὶ διασκορπιῶ ἐν σοὶ ἡγεμόνας καὶ στρατηγούς σου.
And I will recompense to Babylon and to all the Chaldeans that dwell there all their mischiefs that they have done to Sion before your eyes, saith the Lord.
καὶ ἀνταποδώσω τῇ Βαβυλῶνι καὶ πᾶσι τοῖς κατοικοῦσι Χαλδαίοις πάσας τὰς κακίας αὐτῶν, ἃς ἐποίησαν ἐπὶ Σιὼν κατ’ ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν, λέγει Κύριος.
Behold, I am against thee, the ruined mountain, that destroys the whole earth; and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and will roll thee down upon the rocks, and will make thee as a burnt mountain.
ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ πρός σε, τὸ ὄρος τὸ διεφθαρμένον, τὸ διαφθεῖρον πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν, καὶ ἐκτενῶ τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ κατακυλιῶ σε ἐπὶ τῶν πετρῶν καὶ δώσω σε ὡς ὄρος ἐμπεπυρισμένον·
And they shall not take from thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for a foundation: for thou shalt be a desolation for ever, saith the Lord.
καὶ οὐ μὴ λάβωσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ λίθον εἰς γωνίαν καὶ λίθον εἰς θεμέλιον, ὅτι εἰς ἀφανισμὸν ἔσῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, λέγει Κύριος.
Lift up a standard in the land, sound the trumpet among the nations, consecrate the nations against her, raise up kings of Ararat against her by me, and that for the people of Achanaz; set against her engines of war; bring up against her horses as a multitude of locusts.
῎Αρατε σημεῖον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, σαλπίσατε ἐν ἔθνεσι σάλπιγγι, ἁγιάσατε ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἔθνη, παραγγείλατε ἐπ’ αὐτὴν βασιλείαις ᾿Αραρὰτ παρ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ τοῖς ᾿Ασχαναζαίοις, ἐπιστήσατε ἐπ’ αὐτὴν βελοστάσεις, ἀναβιβάσατε ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἵππον ὡς ἀκρίδων πλῆθος.
Bring up nations against her, even the king of the Medes and of the whole earth, his rulers, and all his captains.
ἀναβιβάσατε ἐπ’ αὐτὴν ἔθνη, τὸν βασιλέα τῶν Μήδων καὶ πάσης τῆς γῆς, τοὺς ἡγουμένους αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς στρατηγοὺς αὐτοῦ.
The earth has quaked and been troubled, because the purpose of the Lord has risen up against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, and uninhabitable.
ἐσείσθη ἡ γῆ καὶ ἐπόνεσε, διότι ἐξανέστη ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα λογισμὸς Κυρίου τοῦ θεῖναι τὴν γῆν Βαβυλῶνος εἰς ἀφανισμὸν καὶ μὴ κατοικεῖσθαι αὐτήν.
The warrior of Babylon has failed to fight; they shall sit there in the siege; their power is broken; they are become like women; her tabernacles have been set on fire; her bars are broken.
ἐξέλιπε μαχητὴς Βαβυλῶνος τοῦ πολεμεῖν, καθήσονται ἐκεῖ ἐν περιοχῇ, ἐθραύσθη ἡ δυναστεία αὐτῶν, ἐγενήθησαν ὡσεὶ γυναῖκες, ἐνεπυρίσθη τὰ σκηνώματα αὐτῆς, συνετρίβησαν οἱ μοχλοὶ αὐτῆς.
One shall rush, running to meet another runner, and one shall go with tidings to meet another with tidings, to bring tidings to the king of Babylon, that his city is taken.
διώκων εἰς ἀπάντησιν διώκοντος διώξεται καὶ ἀναγγέλλων εἰς ἀπάντησιν ἀναγγέλλοντος τοῦ ἀναγγεῖλαι τῷ βασιλεῖ Βαβυλῶνος, ὅτι ἑάλωκεν ἡ πόλις αὐτοῦ,
At the end of his passages they were taken, and his cisterns they have burnt with fire, and his warriors are going forth.
ἀπ’ ἐσχάτου τῶν διαβάσεων αὐτοῦ ἐλήφθησαν, καὶ τὰ συστήματα αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησαν ἐν πυρί, καὶ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ οἱ πολεμισταὶ ἐξέρχονται.
For thus saith the Lord, The houses of the king of Babylon shall be threshed as a floor in the season; yet a little while, and her harvest shall come.
διότι τάδε λέγει Κύριος· οἶκοι βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος ὡς ἅλων ὥριμος ἁλοηθήσονται· ἔτι μικρὸν καὶ ἥξει ὁ ἄμητος αὐτῆς.
He has devoured me, he has torn me asunder, airy darkness has come upon me; Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon has swallowed me up, as a dragon has he filled his belly with my delicacies.
κατέφαγέ με, ἐμερίσατό με, κατέλαβέ με σκεῦος λεπτόν, Ναβουχοδονόσορ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος· κατέπιέ με ὡς δράκων, ἔπλησε τὴν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ, ἀπὸ τῆς τρυφῆς μου ἔξωσέ με·
My troubles and my distresses have driven me out into Babylon, shall she that dwells in Sion say; and my blood shall be upon the Chaldeans dwelling there, shall Jerusalem say.
οἱ μόχθοι μου καὶ αἱ ταλαιπωρίαι μου εἰς Βαβυλῶνα. ἐρεῖ κατοικοῦσα Σιών· καὶ τὸ αἷμά μου ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Χαλδαίους, ἐρεῖ ῾Ιερουσαλήμ·
Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will judge thine adversary, and I will execute vengeance for thee; and I will waste her sea, and dry up her fountain.
διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει Κύριος· ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ κρινῶ τὴν ἀντίδικόν σου καὶ ἐκδικήσω τὴν ἐκδίκησίν σου καὶ ἐρημώσω τὴν θάλασσαν αὐτῆς καὶ ξηρανῶ τὴν πηγὴν αὐτῆς.
And Babylon shall be a desolation, and shall not be inhabited.
καὶ ἔσται Βαβυλὼν εἰς ἀφανισμόν, καὶ οὐ κατοικηθήσεται.
For they rose up together as lions, and as lions’ whelps.
ὅτι ἅμα ὡς λέοντες ἐξηγέρθησαν καὶ ὡς σκύμνοι λεόντων.
In their heat I will give them a draught, and make them drunk, that they may be stupified, and sleep an everlasting sleep, and not awake, saith the Lord.
ἐν τῇ θερμασίᾳ αὐτῶν δώσω πότημα αὐτοῖς καὶ μεθύσω αὐτούς, ὅπως καρωθῶσι καὶ ὑπνώσωσιν ὕπνον αἰώνιον καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξεγερθῶσι, λέγει Κύριος·
And bring thou them down as lambs to the slaughter, and rams with kids.
καταβιβάσω αὐτοὺς ὡς ἄρνας εἰς σφαγὴν καὶ ὡς κριοὺς μετ’ ἐρίφων.
How has the boast of all the earth been taken and caught in a snare! how has Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
πῶς ἑάλω καὶ ἐθηρεύθη τὸ καύχημα πάσης τῆς γῆς; πῶς ἐγένετο Βαβυλὼν εἰς ἀφανισμὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν;
The sea has come up upon Babylon with the sound of its waves, and she is covered.
ἀνέβη ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα ἡ θάλασσα ἐν ἤχῳ κυμάτων αὐτῆς, καὶ κατεκαλύφθη.
Her cities are become like a dry and trackless land; not so much as one man shall dwell in it, neither shall a son of man lodge in it.
ἐγενήθησαν αἱ πόλεις αὐτῆς ὡς γῆ ἄνυδρος καὶ ἄβατος, οὐ κατοικήσει ἐν αὐτῇ οὐδὲ εἷς, οὐδὲ μὴ καταλύσει ἐν αὐτῇ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου.
And I will take vengeance on Babylon, and bring forth out of her mouth what she has swallowed down, and the nations shall no more be gathered to her:
καὶ ἐκδικήσω ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα καὶ ἐξοίσω ἃ κατέπιεν ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐ μὴ συναχθῶσι πρὸς αὐτὴν ἔτι τὰ ἔθνη·
and in Babylon the slain men of all the earth shall fall.
καὶ ἐν Βαβυλῶνι πεσοῦνται τραυματίαι πάσης τῆς γῆς.
Go forth of the land, ye that escape, and stay not; ye that are afar off, remember the Lord, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.
ἀνασῳζόμενοι ἐκ γῆς πορεύεσθε καὶ μὴ ἵστασθε· οἱ μακρόθεν, μνήσθητε τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ ἀναβήτω ἐπὶ τὴν καρδίαν ὑμῶν.
We are ashamed, because we have heard our reproach; disgrace has covered our face; aliens are come into our sanctuary, even into the house of the Lord.
ᾐσχύνθημεν, ὅτι ἠκούσαμεν ὀνειδισμὸν ἡμῶν, κατεκάλυψεν ἀτιμία τὸ πρόσωπον ἡμῶν, εἰσῆλθον ἀλλογενεῖς εἰς τὰ ἅγια ἡμῶν, εἰς οἶκον Κυρίου.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will take vengeance upon her graven images: and slain men shall fall in all her land.
διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται, λέγει Κύριος, καὶ ἐκδικήσω ἐπὶ τὰ γλυπτὰ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ αὐτῆς πεσοῦνται τραυματίαι.
For though Babylon should go up as the heaven, and though she should strengthen her walls with her power, from me shall come they that shall destroy her, saith the Lord.
ὅτι ἐὰν ἀναβῇ Βαβυλὼν ὡς ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ὅτι ἐὰν ὀχυρώσῃ τὰ τείχῃ ἰσχύϊ αὐτῆς, παρ’ ἐμοῦ ἥξουσιν ἐξολοθρεύοντες αὐτήν, λέγει Κύριος.
A sound of a cry in Babylon, and great destruction in the land of the Chaldeans:
φωνὴ κραυγῆς ἐν Βαβυλῶνι, καὶ συντριβὴ μεγάλη ἐν γῇ Χαλδαίων,
for the Lord has utterly destroyed Babylon, and cut off from her the great voice sounding as many waters: he has consigned her voice to destruction.
ὅτι ἐξωλόθρευσε Κύριος τὴν Βαβυλῶνα καὶ ἀπώλεσεν ἀπ’ αὐτῆς φωνὴν μεγάλην ἠχοῦσαν ὡς ὕδατα πολλά, ἔδωκεν εἰς ὄλεθρον φωνὴν αὐτῆς.
For distress has come upon Babylon, her warriors are taken, their bows are useless: for God recompenses them.
ὅτι ἦλθεν ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα ταλαιπωρία, ἑάλωσαν οἱ μαχηταὶ αὐτῆς, ἐπτόηται τὸ τόξον αὐτῶν, ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἀνταποδίδωσιν αὐτοῖς.
The Lord recompenses, and will make her leaders and her wise men and her captains completely drunk, saith the King, the Lord Almighty is his name.
Κύριος ἀνταποδίδωσιν αὐτῷ τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν· καὶ μεθύσει μέθῃ τοὺς ἡγεμόνας αὐτῆς καὶ τοὺς σοφοὺς αὐτῆς καὶ τοὺς στρατηγοὺς αὐτῆς, λέγει ὁ βασιλεύς, Κύριος παντοκράτωρ ὄνομα αὐτῷ.
Thus saith the Lord, The wall of Babylon was made broad, but it shall be completely broken down, and her high gates shall be burnt with fire; and the peoples shall not labour in vain, nor the nations fail in their rule.
τάδε λέγει Κύριος· τεῖχος Βαβυλῶνος ἐπλατύνθη, κατασκαπτόμενον κατασκαφήσεται, καὶ αἱ πύλαι αὐτῆς αἱ ὑψηλαὶ ἐμπυρισθήσονται, καὶ οὐ κοπιάσουσι λαοὶ εἰς κενόν, καὶ ἔθνη ἐν ἀρχῇ ἐκλείψουσιν.
THE WORD WHICH THE LORD COMMANDED THE PROPHET JEREMIAS to say to Saraeas son of Nerias, son of Maasaeas, when he went from Sedekias king of Juda to Babylon, in the fourth year of his reign. And Saraeas was over the bounties.
῾Ο λόγος, ὃν ἐνετείλατο Κύριος ῾Ιερεμίᾳ τῷ προφήτῃ εἰπεῖν τῷ Σαραίᾳ υἱῷ Νηρίου, υἱοῦ Μαασαίου, ὅτε ἐπορεύετο παρὰ Σεδεκίου βασιλέως ᾿Ιούδα εἰς Βαβυλῶνα, ἐν τῷ ἔτει τῷ τετάρτῳ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ, καὶ Σαραίας ἄρχων δώρων.
And Jeremias wrote in a book all the evils which should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
καὶ ἔγραψεν ῾Ιερεμίας πάντα τὰ κακά, ἃ ἥξει ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα, ἐν βιβλίῳ ἑνί, πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους τοὺς γεγραμμένους ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα.
And Jeremias said to Saraeas, When thou art come to Babylon, and shalt see and read all these words;
καὶ εἶπεν ῾Ιερεμίας πρὸς Σαραίαν· ὅταν ἔλθῃς εἰς Βαβυλῶνα, καὶ ὄψῃ καὶ ἀναγνώσῃ πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους
then thou shalt say, O Lord God, thou hast spoken against this place, to destroy it, and that there should be none to dwell in it, neither man nor beast; for it shall be a desolation for ever.
καὶ ἐρεῖς· Κύριε Κύριε, σὺ ἐλάλησας ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τοῦτον τοῦ ἐξολοθρεῦσαι αὐτὸν καὶ τοῦ μὴ εἶναι ἐν αὐτῷ κατοικοῦντας ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους, ὅτι ἀφανισμὸς εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἔσται.
And it shall come to pass, when thou shalt cease from reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone upon it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates;
καὶ ἔσται ὅταν παύσῃ τοῦ ἀναγινώσκειν τὸ βιβλίον τοῦτο, καὶ ἐπιδήσεις ἐπ’ αὐτὸ λίθον καὶ ρίψεις αὐτὸ εἰς μέσον τοῦ Εὐφράτου
and shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and not rise, because of the evils which I bring upon it.
καὶ ἐρεῖς· οὕτως καταδύσεται Βαβυλὼν καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀναστῇ ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν κακῶν, ὧν ἐγὼ ἐπάγω ἐπ’ αὐτήν.
Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I stir up against Babylon, and against the Chaldeans dwelling therein, a deadly burning wind.
(Μασ. ΝΑ΄ .) ΤΑΔΕ λέγει Κύριος· ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐξεγείρω ἐπὶ Βαβυλῶνα καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Χαλδαίους ἄνεμον καύσωνα διαφθείροντα.
И҆ бы́сть въ четве́ртое лѣ́то, ца́рствꙋющꙋ седекі́и царю̀ і҆ꙋ́динꙋ, въ пѧ́тый мцⷭ҇ъ, рече́ ми а҆на́нїа сы́нъ а҆зѡ́ровъ лжи́вый проро́къ гаваѡні́тскїй въ домꙋ̀ гдⷭ҇ни, пред̾ ѻ҆чи́ма жерцє́въ и҆ всѣ́хъ люді́й, глаго́лѧ:
