Composite 16 - Isaiah 63.15-64.5, 8-9 § 191

Look down from heaven, Lord, and see from your holy house and your glory. Where is the multitude of your mercy and your pity, that you keep back from us, O Lord? For you are our Father, though Abraham did not know us, though Israel did not acknowledge us; but you are our Father, deliver us. From the beginning your name is upon us. Why have you made us wander from your way, Lord? Why have you hardened our hearts not to fear you? Turn back for the sake of your servants, for the tribes of your inheritance, that we may inherit a small part of your holy mountain. Our enemies have trampled down your sanctuary. We have become as at the beginning, when you did not know us, when your name had not been invoked upon us. If you open the heaven, trembling will take hold upon mountains from you, and they will melt as wax melts before the fire; and fire will burn up your enemies, and your name will be manifest to your enemies; before your face nations will be troubled. When you do glorious things trembling from you will seize mountains. From eternity we have not heard, nor have we seen a God save you; and your works are true, and you do mercy to those who wait on you. For mercy will meet those who act justly, and they will be mindful of your ways. And now, Lord, your are our Father, while we are your clay and you are our Fashioner; we are all the works of your hands; do not be very angry with us, Lord, and do not remember our sins in season. And now look upon, Lord, for we are all your people.

Jeremiah 2.2-12 § 164
1

And he said, Thus saith the Lord,

2

I remember the kindness of thy youth, and the love of thine espousals,

3

in following the Holy One of Israel, saith the Lord, Israel was the holy [people] to the Lord, [and] the first-fruits of his increase: all that devoured him shall offend; evils shall come upon them, saith the Lord.

4

Hear the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and every family of the house of Israel.

5

Thus saith the Lord, What trespass have your fathers found in me, that they have revolted far from me, and gone after vanities, and become vain?

τάδε λέγει Κύριος· τί εὕροσαν οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἐν ἐμοὶ πλημμέλημα, ὅτι ἀπέστησαν μακρὰν ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ὀπίσω τῶν ματαίων καὶ ἐματαιώθησαν;

6

And they said not, Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who guided us in the wilderness, in an untried and trackless land, in a land which no man at all went through, and no man dwelt there?

καὶ οὐκ εἶπαν· ποῦ ἐστι Κύριος ὁ ἀναγαγὼν ἡμᾶς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου, ὁ καθοδηγήσας ἡμᾶς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, ἐν γῇ ἀπείρῳ καὶ ἀβάτῳ, ἐν γῇ ἀνύδρῳ καὶ ἀκάρπῳ, ἐν γῇ, ᾗ οὐ διώδευσεν ἐν αὐτῇ ἀνὴρ οὐθὲν καὶ οὐ κατῴκησεν ἐκεῖ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου;

и҆ не реко́ша: гдѣ́ є҆сть гдⷭ҇ь, и҆зведы́й на́съ ѿ землѝ є҆гѵ́петскїѧ, преведы́й на́съ по пꙋсты́ни, по землѝ неѡбита́ннѣй и҆ непрохо́днѣй, по землѝ безво́днѣй и҆ непло́днѣй, по землѝ, по не́йже не ходи́лъ мꙋ́жъ никогда́же и҆ не ѡ҆бита́лъ человѣ́къ та́мѡ;

7

And I brought you to Carmel, that ye should eat the fruits thereof, and the good thereof; and ye went in, and defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

8

The priest said not, Where is the Lord? and they that held by the law knew me not: the shepherds also sinned against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and went after that which profited not.

9

Therefore I will yet plead with you, and will plead with your children’s children.

For go to the isles of the Chettians, and see; and send to Kedar, and observe accurately, and see if such things have been done;

if the nations will change their gods, though they are not gods: but my people have changed their glory, [for that] from which they shall not be profited.

12

The heaven is amazed at this, and is very exceedingly horror-struck, saith the Lord.

Matthew 10.16-22 § 36
16

Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

17

But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;

And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

Divine Liturgy

Philippians 1:8–14 § 236

Brethren, God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God ... But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the Gospel, so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear...

Hebrews § 331ctr (Earthquake)

Earthquake

He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives.” If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastisement, of which all have become partakers, then you are bastards and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness ... Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but grievous; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which have been exercised in it. Therefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed... Earthquake Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking diligently lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause you trouble, and by this many become defiled; lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. For you know that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears. For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, so that they that heard it begged that* the word should not be spoken to them any more. (For they could not endure that which was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through with an arrow.” And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I exceedingly fear and quake.”) But you have come unto Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of Angels, to the general assembly and Church of the firstborn which are registered in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel... Earthquake See that you do not refuse Him that speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven...” And this word, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Prokeimenon, Tone 7

The righteous one shall rejoice in the Lord and shall set his hope on Him

Verse: Hear my voice, O God, when I pray unto Thee!________________________________ * Until the Leavetaking

My son Timothy, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who shall be able to teach others also. You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who chose him to be a soldier. And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the farmer that labors who must take the first share of the crops. Consider what I say, and may the Lord give you understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my Gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Alleluia, Tone 4

The righteous shall flourish like a palm tree and shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon

Communion Hymn

The light of Thy countenance has shown upon us, O Lord. And also: Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous! Praise befits to just!

Luke 5.12-16 § 18
12

And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

13

And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

14

And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

15

But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

16

And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

Matthew 8.23-27 § 27 (Earthquake)

23

And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.

24

And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

25

And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.

26

And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

27

But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!

οἱ δὲ ἄνθρωποι ἐθαύμασαν λέγοντες· ποταπός ἐστιν οὗτος, ὅτι καὶ οἱ ἄνεμοι καὶ ἡ θάλασσα ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ;

Человѣ́цы же чꙋди́шасѧ, глаго́люще: кто̀ є҆́сть се́й, ꙗ҆́кѡ и҆ вѣ́три и҆ мо́ре послꙋ́шаютъ є҆гѡ̀;

18

If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20

Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21

But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22

If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23

He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24

If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25

But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27

And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Chapter 16

1

THESE things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

2

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
