Nehemiah 7
Commentary from 1 father
that I gave charge to Ananias my brother, and Ananias the ruler of the palace, over Jerusalem: for he was a true man, and one that feared God beyond many.
καὶ ἐνετειλάμην τῷ ᾿Ανανίᾳ ἀδελφῷ μου καὶ τῷ ᾿Ανανίᾳ ἄρχοντι τῆς βιρὰ ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ, ὅτι αὐτὸς ὡς ἀνὴρ ἀληθὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν Θεὸν παρὰ πολλούς,
и҆ повелѣ́хъ а҆нані́и бра́тꙋ моемꙋ̀ и҆ а҆нані́и нача́льникꙋ до́мꙋ, и҆́же во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ: то́й бо бѣ̀ ꙗ҆́кѡ мꙋ́жъ и҆́стиненъ и҆ боѧ́йсѧ бг҃а па́че про́чихъ:
And I said to them, The gates of Jerusalem shall not be opened till sunrise; and while they are still watching, let the doors be shut, and bolted; and set watches of them that dwell in Jerusalem, [every] man at his post, and [every] man over against his house.
καὶ εἶπα αὐτοῖς· οὐκ ἀνοιγήσονται πύλαι ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ ἕως ἅμα τῷ ἡλίῳ, καὶ ἔτι αὐτῶν γρηγορούντων κλειέσθωσαν αἱ θύραι καὶ σφηνούσθωσαν· καὶ στῆσον προφύλακας οἰκούντων ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ, ἀνὴρ ἐν προφυλακῇ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνὴρ ἀπέναντι οἰκίας αὐτοῦ.
и҆ реко́хъ и҆́ма: да не ѿве́рзꙋтсѧ врата̀ і҆ерⷭ҇ли̑мскаѧ, до́ндеже взы́детъ со́лнце: и҆ є҆щѐ и҆̀мъ бдѧ́щымъ, да заключа́тсѧ врата̀ и҆ засꙋ̑нꙋта да бꙋ́дꙋтъ засо́вами: и҆ поста́ви стра́жы ѿ ѡ҆бита́ющихъ во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ, кі́йждо во стра́жи свое́й и҆ кі́йждо проти́вꙋ до́мꙋ своегѡ̀.
And I appointed watchmen from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, etc. The watchmen of souls are not from the neophytes, nor from the common crowd, but they are to be established from those who, having been liberated by the grace of God from the struggle with vices, have accustomed their minds to Jerusalem, that is, to the vision of tranquil peace, who can say with the Apostle: “But our conversation is in heaven” (Philippians 3). Of whom it is well said that He has appointed each in his own turn; so that, after completing their course, being withdrawn from this light, others immediately are preferred in their place for the governance of the faithful. Nor at any time are there lacking those who strive to keep vigil for the peace of the holy Church on account of night terrors, while the truth of the prophetic word always runs to the end of the age, in which it is said to the same Church: “Instead of your fathers, sons are born to you” (Psalm 45). It is also well added, “And each against his own house.” For in this way the guardianship of the holy Church is rightly perfected, if each one carries the concern of all the faithful in such a way that he is especially placed over them, to whom, by the authority of God, he devotes more diligent care.

Now the city [was] wide and large; and the people [were] few in it, and the houses were not built.
Καὶ ἡ πόλις πλατεῖα καὶ μεγάλη, καὶ ὁ λαὸς ὀλίγος ἐν αὐτῇ, καὶ οὐκ ἦσαν οἰκίαι ᾠκοδομημέναι.
Гра́дъ же бы́сть широ́къ и҆ вели́къ, и҆ люді́й ма́лѡ въ не́мъ, и҆ не бѧ́хꙋ до́мы со́здани.
And God put [it] into my heart, and I gathered the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, into companies: and I found a register of the company that came up first, and I found written in it as follows:
καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ Θεὸς εἰς τὴν καρδίαν μου καὶ συνῆξα τοὺς ἐντίμους καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν εἰς συνοδίας· καὶ εὗρον βιβλίον τῆς συνοδίας, οἳ ἀνέβησαν ἐν πρώτοις, καὶ εὗρον γεγραμμένον ἐν αὐτῷ.
И҆ дадѐ бг҃ъ въ се́рдце моѐ, и҆ собра́хъ честны́хъ и҆ кнѧзе́й и҆ наро́дъ въ собра́нїе: и҆ ѡ҆брѣто́хъ кни́гꙋ сочисле́нїѧ тѣ́хъ, и҆̀же взыдо́ша пе́рвѣе, и҆ ѡ҆брѣто́хъ напи́сано въ не́й:
The city, however, was very wide and large, etc. These things suit that time typically. When the word of God, sown far and wide by the apostles, the whole world received the new seed of faith, and the Church buildings not yet constructed, but only by hearing and the sacraments of the word, the people were still being trained while still unpolished.

Moreover, God put it into my heart, etc. Therefore, having convened not only the nobles and magistrates but also all the common people, he carefully took care to review their number so that he could discern the complete total of all, who should inhabit the city of Jerusalem itself, and who indeed should dwell in other cities.

Now these [are] the children of the country, that came up from captivity, of the number which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon carried away, and they returned to Jerusalem and to Juda, [every] man to his city;
καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ τῆς χώρας οἱ ἀναβάντες ἀπὸ αἰχμαλωσίας τῆς ἀποικίας, ἧς ἀπῴκισε Ναβουχοδονόσορ ὁ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ καὶ εἰς ᾿Ιούδα ἀνὴρ εἰς τὴν πόλιν αὐτοῦ

with Zorobabel, and Jesus, and Neemia, Azaria, and Reelma, Naemani, Mardochaeus, Balsan, Maspharath, Esdra, Boguia, Inaum, Baana, Masphar, men of the people of Israel.

The porters; the children of Salum, the children of Ater, the children of Telmon, the children of Acub, the children of Atita, the children of Sabi, a hundred and thirty-eight.
οἱ πυλωροί, υἱοὶ Σαλούμ, υἱοὶ ᾿Ατήρ, υἱοὶ Τελμών, υἱοὶ ᾿Ακούβ, υἱοὶ ᾿Ατιτά, υἱοὶ Σαβί, ἑκατὸν τριακονταοκτώ·
двє́рницы сы́нове селлꙋ̑мли,
The Nathinim; the children of Sea, the children of Aspha, the children of Tabaoth,
οἱ ναθινίμ, υἱοὶ Σηά, υἱοὶ ᾿Ασφά, υἱοὶ Ταβαώθ,

the children of Basaloth, the children of Mida, the children of Adasan,
υἱοὶ Βασαλώθ, υἱοὶ Μιδά, υἱοὶ ᾿Αδασάν,
сы́нове ваквꙋ́кѡвы, сы́нове а҆хі́фѡвы, сы́нове а҆рꙋ̑рины,
the children of Barcue, the children of Sisarath, the children of Thema,
υἱοὶ Βαρκουέ, υἱοὶ Σισαράθ, υἱοὶ Θημά,
сы́нове васалѡ́ѳѡвы, сы́нове мїда́євы, сы́нове а҆даса̑ни,
the children of Nisia, the children of Atipha.
υἱοὶ Νισιά, υἱοὶ ᾿Ατιφά,
сы́нове варкꙋ́євы, сы́нове сїсара́ѳѡвы, сы́нове ѳима́євы,
The children of the servants of Solomon; the children of Sutei, the children of Sapharat, the children of Pherida,
υἱοὶ δούλων Σαλωμών, υἱοὶ Σουτεΐ, υἱοὶ Σαφαράτ, υἱοὶ Φεριδά,
сы́нове нїсі̑ины, сы́нове а҆ті́фѡвы: сы́нове рабѡ́въ соломѡ́новыхъ,
the children of Jelel, the children of Dorcon, the children of Gadael,
υἱοὶ ᾿Ιελήλ, υἱοὶ Δορκών, υἱοὶ Γαδαήλ,
сы́нове сꙋтє́ины, сы́нове сафара́тѡвы, сы́нове фері̑дины,
the children of Saphatia, the children of Ettel, the children of Phacarath, the children of Sabaim the children of Emim.
υἱοὶ Σαφατία, υἱοὶ ᾿Εττήλ, υἱοὶ Φακαράθ, υἱοὶ Σαβαΐμ, υἱοὶ ᾿Ημίμ·
сы́нове лели̑лины, сы́нове доркѡ̑ни, сы́нове гадаи̑ли, сы́нове фараха́сѡвы,
All the Nathinim, and children of the servants of Solomon, [were] three hundred and ninety-two.
πάντες οἱ ναθινίμ, καὶ υἱοὶ δούλων Σαλωμών, τριακόσιοι ἐνενηκονταδύο.
сы́нове саваи̑ни, сы́нове и҆мми̑ни:
And these went up from Thelmeleth, Thelaresa, Charub, Eron, Jemer: but they could not declare the houses of their families, or their seed, whether they were of Israel.
καὶ οὗτοι ἀνέβησαν ἀπὸ Θελμελέθ, Θελαρησά, Χαρούβ, ᾿Ηρών, ᾿Ιεμὴρ καὶ οὐκ ἐδυνάσθησαν ἀπαγγεῖλαι οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν καὶ σπέρμα αὐτῶν εἰ ἀπὸ ᾿Ισραήλ εἰσιν·
всѝ наѳїні́ми и҆ сы́нове слꙋ́гъ соломѡ́новыхъ три́ста де́вѧтьдесѧтъ два̀.
The children of Dalaia, the children of Tobia, the children of Necoda, six hundred and forty-two.
υἱοὶ Δαλαία, υἱοὶ Τωβία, υἱοὶ Νεκωδά, ἑξακόσιοι τεσσαρακονταδύο·
И҆ сі́и взыдо́ша ѿ ѳелме́ѳа, ѳеласа́ръ, харꙋ́въ, и҆рѡ́нъ, і҆еми́ръ, и҆ не мого́ша сказа́ти домѡ́въ ѻ҆те́чествъ свои́хъ и҆ сѣ́мене своегѡ̀, ѿ і҆и҃лѧ ли бы́ша:

καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἱερέων υἱοὶ ᾿Εβία, υἱοὶ ᾿Ακώς, υἱοὶ Βερζελλί, ὅτι ἔλαβον ἀπὸ θυγατέρων Βερζελλὶ τοῦ Γαλααδίτου γυναῖκας καὶ ἐκλήθησαν ἐπ’ ὀνόματι αὐτῶν·
сы́нове далеа́євы, сы́нове вꙋа́євы, сы́нове тѡві̑ины, сы́нове некѡда́євы, ше́сть сѡ́тъ четы́редесѧть два̀:

οὗτοι ἐζήτησαν γραφὴν αὐτῶν τῆς συνοδίας, καὶ οὐχ εὑρέθη, καὶ ἠγχιστεύθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς ἱερατείας,
и҆ ѿ свѧщє́нникъ сы́нове а҆ві́євы, сы́нове а҆ккѡ́сѡвы, сы́нове верзелла̑ины, ꙗ҆́кѡ поѧ́ша ѿ дще́рей верзелла́а галааді́тина жєны̀ и҆ прозва́шасѧ по и҆́мени и҆́хъ.

καὶ εἶπεν ᾿Αθερσασθά, ἵνα μὴ φάγωσιν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἁγίου τῶν ἁγίων, ἕως ἀναστῇ ἱερεὺς φωτίσων.
Сі́и и҆ска́ша писа́нїѧ своегѡ̀ родосло́вїѧ, и҆ не ѡ҆брѣто́ша, и҆ и҆зве́ржени сꙋ́ть ѿ свѧще́нства.
And all the congregation was about forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty,
καὶ ἐγένετο πᾶσα ἡ ἐκκλησία ὡσεὶ τέσσαρες μυριάδες δισχίλιοι τριακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα,
Рече́ же а҆ѳерсаѳа̀ {неемі́а} и҆̀мъ, да не ꙗ҆дѧ́тъ ѿ ст҃а̑ѧ ст҃ы́хъ, до́ндеже воста́нетъ свѧще́нникъ и҆з̾ѧвлѧ́ѧй.
besides their men-servants and their maid-servants: these were seven thousand three hundred and thirty seven: and the singing-men and singing-women, two hundred and forty-five.
πάρεξ δούλων αὐτῶν καὶ παιδισκῶν αὐτῶν, οὗτοι ἑπτακισχίλιοι τριακόσιοι τριακονταεπτά· καὶ ᾄδοντες καὶ ᾄδουσαι διακόσιοι τεσσαρακονταπέντε·
И҆ бы́сть ве́сь собо́ръ є҆динодꙋ́шнѡ а҆́ки четы́редесѧть двѣ̀ ты́сѧщы три́ста шестьдесѧ́тъ,
Two thousand seven hundred asses.
ὄνοι δισχίλιοι ἑπτακόσιοι.
Ко́ни (и҆́хъ) се́дмь сѡ́тъ три́десѧть ше́сть, мскѝ и҆́хъ двѣ́сти четы́редесѧть пѧ́ть, вельблю́ды и҆́хъ четы́ре ста̑ три́десѧть пѧ́ть, ѻ҆слы̀ и҆́хъ ше́сть ты́сѧщъ се́дмь сѡ́тъ два́десѧть.
And part of the heads of families gave into the treasury to Neemias for the work a thousand pieces of gold, fifty bowls, and thirty priests’ [garments].
καὶ ἀπὸ μέρους ἀρχηγῶν τῶν πατριῶν ἔδωκαν εἰς τὸ ἔργον τῷ Νεεμίᾳ εἰς θησαυρὸν χρυσοῦς χιλίους, φιάλας πεντήκοντα καὶ χωθωνὼθ τῶν ἱερέων τριάκοντα.
И҆ ѿ ча́сти нача́льникѡвъ ѻ҆те́чествъ да́ша въ дѣ́ло а҆ѳерсаѳѣ̀, да́ша въ сокро́вище златы́хъ ты́сѧщꙋ, фїа̑лъ пѧтьдесѧ́тъ и҆ ри́зъ жре́ческихъ три́десѧть.
And [some] of the heads of families gave into the treasuries of the work, twenty thousand pieces of gold, and two thousand three hundred pounds of silver. And the rest of the people gave twenty thousand pieces of gold, and two thousand two hundred pounds of silver, and sixty-seven priests’ [garments].
καὶ ἀπὸ ἀρχηγῶν τῶν πατριῶν ἔδωκαν εἰς θησαυροὺς τοῦ ἔργου χρυσοῦ νομίσματος δύο μυριάδας καὶ ἀργυρίου μνᾶς δισχιλίας τριακοσίας, καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ κατάλοιποι τοῦ λαοῦ χρυσίου δύο μυριάδας καὶ ἀργυρίου μνᾶς δισχιλίας διακοσίας καὶ χωθωνὼθ τῶν ἱερέων ἑξηκονταεπτά.
И҆ ѿ нача́льникѡвъ ѻ҆те́чествъ да́ша въ сокро́вище дѣ́ла зла́та дра́хмъ два́десѧть ты́сѧщъ и҆ сребра̀ мна̑съ двѣ̀ ты́сѧщы и҆ три́ста.
And the priests, and Levites, and porters, and singers, and [some] of the people, and the Nathinim, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities.
καί ἐκάθισαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ Λευῖται καὶ οἱ πυλωροὶ καὶ οἱ ᾄδοντες καὶ οἱ ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ οἱ ναθινὶμ καὶ πᾶς ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν.
И҆ да́ша про́чїи лю́дїе зла́та дра́хмъ два́десѧть ты́сѧщъ и҆ сребра̀ мна̑съ двѣ̀ ты́сѧщы и҆ двѣ́сти, и҆ ри́зъ свѧще́нническихъ шестьдесѧ́тъ се́дмь.
And it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
ΚΑΙ ἐγένετο ἡνίκα ᾠκοδομήθη τὸ τεῖχος, καὶ ἔστησα τάς θύρας, καὶ ἐπεσκέπησαν οἱ πυλωροὶ καὶ οἱ ἄδοντες καὶ οἱ Λευῖται.
И҆ бы́сть є҆гда̀ созда́сѧ стѣна̀, и҆ поста́вихъ двє́ри, и҆ сочто́хъ придвє́рники и҆ пѣвцы̀ и҆ леѵі́ты:
