* And thus the officers provided king Solomon: and [they execute] every one in his month all the orders for the table of the king, they omit nothing. 2α And they carried the barley and the straw for the horses and the chariots to the place where the king might be, each according to his charge. 2β And these [were] the requisite supplies for Solomon: in one day thirty measures of fine flour, and sixty measures of fine pounded meal,
β ΚΑΙ ἐχορήγουν οἱ καθεσταμένοι οὕτως τῷ βασιλεῖ Σαλωμὼν καὶ πάντα τὰ διαγγέλματα ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τοῦ βασιλέως, ἕκαστος μῆνα αὐτοῦ, οὐ παραλλάσσουσι λόγον·
И҆ посла̀ хїра́мъ ца́рь тѵ́рскїй ѻ҆́троки своѧ̑ къ соломѡ́нꙋ: ᲂу҆слы́ша бо, ꙗ҆́кѡ пома́заша є҆го̀ на ца́рство вмѣ́стѡ даві́да ѻ҆тца̀ є҆гѡ̀, ꙗ҆́кѡ любѧ́ше хїра́мъ даві́да во всѧ̑ дни̑.
and ten choice calves, and twenty pastured oxen, and a hundred sheep, besides stags, and choice fatted does.
καὶ δέκα μόσχοι ἐκλεκτοὶ καὶ εἴκοσι βόες νομάδες καὶ ἑκατὸν πρόβατα ἐκτὸς ἐλάφων καὶ δορκάδων ἐκλεκτῶν, σιτευτά·
ты̀ вѣ́си ѻ҆тца̀ моего̀ даві́да, ꙗ҆́кѡ не возмо́же созда́ти до́мꙋ и҆́мени гдⷭ҇а бг҃а моегѡ̀, ѿ лица̀ проти́вныхъ, ѡ҆крꙋжи́вшихъ є҆го̀, до́ндеже дадѐ ѧ҆̀ гдⷭ҇ь под̾ стѡпы̀ но́гъ є҆гѡ̀:
And the Lord gave understanding to Solomon, and very much wisdom, and enlargement of heart, as the sand on the seashore.
Καὶ ἔδωκε Κύριος φρόνησιν τῷ Σαλωμὼν καὶ σοφίαν πολλὴν σφόδρα καὶ χύμα καρδίας ὡς ἡ ἄμμος ἡ παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν.
и҆ сѐ, а҆́зъ глаго́лю созда́ти до́мъ и҆́мени гдⷭ҇а бг҃а моегѡ̀, ꙗ҆́коже гл҃а гдⷭ҇ь бг҃ъ къ даві́дꙋ ѻ҆тцꙋ̀ моемꙋ̀, гл҃ѧ: сы́нъ тво́й, є҆го́же да́мъ вмѣ́стѡ тебє̀ на престо́лъ тво́й, то́й сози́ждетъ до́мъ и҆́мени моемꙋ̀:
After this war one work remains for us, O leaders, that which Solomon achieved, The peaceful scion and the unarmed heir Of a warlike realm, whose father’s weary hand Was sullied by the ardent blood of kings. The blood effaced, a temple is upraised And golden altar, house sublime of Christ. Jerusalem then by its temple crowned, Received its God, now that the wandering ark On the marble altar found repose. In our camp let a sacred temple rise, that God may in its sanctuary dwell. What profits it to have repelled the hosts Of earthborn vices, if the Son of man From heaven descending, enter the body cleansed, But unadorned and not a temple fair? Thus far we have engaged in fierce conflict Now let white-vestured Peace perform its tasks, And youth unarmed build up a sacred house. - "The Spiritual Combat 804-22"
And Solomon abounded greatly beyond the wisdom of all the ancients, and beyond all the wise men of Egypt.
καὶ ἐπληθύνθη Σαλωμὼν σφόδρα ὑπὲρ τὴν φρόνησιν πάντων ἀρχαίων ἀνθρώπων καὶ ὑπὲρ πάντας φρονίμους Αἰγύπτου
И҆ бѣ̀ хїра́мъ даѧ̀ соломѡ́нꙋ ке́дры и҆ пе́ѵги и҆ всю̀ во́лю є҆гѡ̀.
Here we do not need to work around any concealed meaning; indeed, in this event there is a clear analogy with Christ and the actions he undertook for the building of the church. As Solomon ordered timbers to be cut from the mountains of Lebanon and stones to be shipped by sea, and employed them after they had been brought to the builder’s yard of the temple, so Christ, after receiving the Jews and the Gentiles from the timbers of infidelity, transported them to the builder’s yard of the temple which is not made by human hands.
On the First Book of Kings 5:10
And he was wiser than all [other] men: and he was wiser than Gaethan the Zarite, and [than] Aenan, and [than] Chalcal and Darala the son of Mal.
καὶ ἐσοφίσατο ὑπὲρ πάντας τοὺς ἀνθρώπους καὶ ἐσοφίσατο ὑπὲρ Γαιθὰν τὸν Ζαρείτην καὶ τὸν Αἰνὰν καὶ τὸν Χαλκὰλ καὶ Δαρδὰ υἱοὺς Μάλ.
И҆ дадѐ соломѡ́нъ хїра́мꙋ два́десѧть ты́сѧщъ мѣ́ръ пшени́цы, и҆ пи́щꙋ до́мꙋ є҆гѡ̀, и҆ два́десѧть ты́сѧщъ мѣ́ръ є҆ле́а чи́стагѡ: по семꙋ̀ дава́ше соломѡ́нъ хїра́мꙋ на всѧ́ко лѣ́то.
And Solomon spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were five thousand.
καὶ ἐλάλησε Σαλωμὼν τρισχιλίας παραβολάς, καὶ ἦσαν ᾠδαὶ αὐτοῦ πεντακισχίλιαι.
И҆ гдⷭ҇ь дадѐ соломѡ́нꙋ премꙋ́дрость, ꙗ҆́коже гл҃а є҆мꙋ̀. И҆ бѣ̀ ми́ръ междꙋ̀ хїра́момъ и҆ междꙋ̀ соломѡ́номъ, и҆ положи́ша завѣ́тъ междꙋ̀ собо́ю.
And he spoke of trees, from the cedar in Libanus even to the hyssop which comes out through the wall: he spoke also of cattle, and of birds, and of reptiles, and of fishes.
καὶ ἐλάλησεν ὑπὲρ τῶν ξύλων ἀπὸ τῆς κέδρου τῆς ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ καὶ ἕως τῆς ὑσσώπου τῆς ἐκπορευομένης διὰ τοῦ τοίχου καὶ ἐλάλησε περὶ τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ περὶ τῶν πετεινῶν καὶ περὶ τῶν ἑρπετῶν καὶ περὶ τῶν ἰχθύων.
И҆ взѧ̀ ца́рь да́нь ѿ всегѡ̀ і҆и҃лѧ, и҆ бѣ̀ да́нь три́десѧть ты́сѧщъ мꙋже́й.
13–14The first thing to note here is that it was not for nothing that Solomon chose workmen from all Israel, nor was there any section of the people from which men fit for such a great task were not taken, because, of course, priests nowadays are not to be chosen from the stock of Aaron alone; rather, people are to be sought from the whole church who, whether by example or word, are competent to build the house of the Lord, and wherever they are found they are to be promoted to the office of teachers without any exception of persons. And when such people are ordained to instruct the infidel and those who are to be called into the joint pastorate of the church, they are sent as energetic and picked men, as it were, to hew in Lebanon the materials for the temple. And indeed the number of thirty thousand, which was the tally of the hewers of wood, can be aptly applied figuratively to those who are perfect in the faith of the holy Trinity, because it is most appropriate for teachers.
Of the Temple of Solomon 1.3.1
And all the nations came to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and [ambassadors] from all the kings of the earth, as many as heard of his wisdom. 14a And Solomon took to himself the daughter of Pharao to wife, and brought her into the city of David until he had finished the house of the Lord, and his own house, and the wall of Jerusalem. 14b Then went up Pharao the king of Egypt, and took Gazer, and burnt it and the Chananite dwelling in Mergab; and Pharao gave them as a dowry to his daughter the wife of Solomon: and Solomon rebuilt Gazer.
β τότε ἀνέβη Φαραὼ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου καὶ προκατελάβετο τὴν Γαζὲρ καὶ ἐνεπύρισεν αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν Χανανίτην τὸν κατοικοῦντα ἐν Μεργάβ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὰς Φαραὼ ἀποστολὰς θυγατρὶ αὐτοῦ γυναικὶ Σαλωμών, καὶ Σαλωμὼν ᾠκοδόμησε τὴν Γαζέρ.
И҆ посла̀ ѧ҆̀ въ лїва́нъ, де́сѧть ты́сѧщъ на мцⷭ҇ъ въ премѣ́нꙋ: мцⷭ҇ъ бы́ша въ лїва́нѣ и҆ два̀ мцⷭ҇а въ домꙋ̀ свое́мъ: и҆ бѧ́ше а҆дѡнїра́мъ над̾ да́нїю.
And Chiram king of Tyre sent his servants to anoint Solomon in the room of David his father, because Chiram always loved David.
Καὶ ἀπέστειλε Χιρὰμ βασιλεὺς Τύρου τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ χρῖσαι τὸν Σαλωμὼν ἀντὶ Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἀγαπῶν ἦν Χιρὰμ τὸν Δαυὶδ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας.
И҆ бѧ́ше соломѡ́нꙋ се́дмьдесѧтъ ты́сѧщъ носѧ́щихъ бремена̀ и҆ ѻ҆́смьдесѧтъ ты́сѧщъ сѣкꙋ́щихъ ка́менїе въ горѣ̀,
15–16These thousands of men employed in the cutting and transportation of the wooden beams and the stones signify the thousands of thousands of assistant spirits sent for our salvation. In the first place, [we see that] God ordered his angels to cut from the rock of the world and to polish and direct accurately the souls of the saints.… Second, in this same symbol, we can observe the toils of the saints for the conversion and salvation of souls, either when they endeavor to drive human beings away from the love of the world or when, after they have accomplished that, they begin to polish the stones cut from the rock until they provide them with luster by a thorough polishing and make them worthy of the heavenly building. Then they are taken and employed by the supreme builder.… Finally we can interpret the workers of Solomon to be the angels sent to accomplish their ministry, as well as the prophets and the apostles chosen from the old people to build the church.… The builders sent by the king of Tyre symbolize those strong in doctrine and holiness, whom the nation of the Gentiles abundantly supplied for the same purpose.
On the First Book of Kings 5:10
15–16Listen to even greater mysteries. At the time when Solomon built the temple, it was our peacemaker who says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you,” “for he himself is our peace,” “the peace of God that surpasses all understanding,” who himself built the temple for God. Observe what Scripture says about the building of the temple by Solomon: “And there were seventy thousand quarrymen and eighty thousand carriers.” Mark the number. The masons who were cutting stones, who were preparing, as it were, the foundations of the buildings, who were taking up stones from the ground to build the temple of God, are reckoned in the number seven, in the prophets, in the patriarchs, for while they seemingly were driving the human race from off the earth, they were making preparations for the temple of the Lord. The latter, the eighty thousand, symbolize the apostolic preaching and the Gospels; these are they who with the Lord Savior and Solomon were carrying the heavy burden of the nations. This surely is the height of mystery, but hear of even deeper mysteries! “And the overseers over the works and the temple were three thousand.” They cannot be greater, not even the overseers in charge of the work, except that they proclaim the Trinity.
Homilies on the Psalms 19 (ps 89 [90])
And Solomon sent to Chiram, saying,
καὶ ἀπέστειλε Σαλωμὼν πρὸς Χιρὰμ λέγων·
кромѣ̀ старѣ́йшинъ приста́вленыхъ над̾ дѣла́ми соломѡ́ними, трѝ ты́сѧщы и҆ ше́сть сѡ́тъ приста̑вникъ дѣ́лающихъ дѣла̀.
Thou knewest my father David, that he could not build a house to the name of the Lord my God because of the wars that compassed him about, until the Lord put them under the soles of his feet.
σὺ οἶδας τὸν πατέρα μου Δαυὶδ ὅτι οὐκ ἠδύνατο οἰκοδομῆσαι οἶκον τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου Θεοῦ μου ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν πολέμων τῶν κυκλωσάντων αὐτὸν ἕως τοῦ δοῦναι Κύριον αὐτοὺς ὑπὸ τὰ ἴχνη τῶν ποδῶν αὐτοῦ.
И҆ заповѣ́да ца́рь, и҆ взѧ́ша ка́менїе вели́кое, ка́менїе честно́е на ѡ҆снова́нїе хра́ма, и҆ ка́менїе нете́саное.
But it seems to be in accord with the solemn celebration that we are observing to recall something about the building of the temple and to search out how appropriately its adornment suits the significance of the church. Scripture tells how Solomon ordered that “they should take very great costly stones for the foundation of the temple and should square them off.” These great and costly stones that were laid as a foundation and that supported the entire bulk of the temple built on them suggest the extraordinary teachers of the holy church: “great” because of the outstanding quality of their merits; “costly” because of the splendor of the signs that those who heard the word from the Lord himself produced by their preaching as the fabric of the growing church.
Homilies on the Gospels 2.25
And now the Lord my God has given me rest round about; there is no one plotting against [me], and there is no evil trespass [against me].
καὶ νῦν ἀνέπαυσε Κύριος ὁ Θεός μου ἐμοὶ κυκλόθεν· οὐκ ἔστιν ἐπίβουλος καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἁμάρτημα πονηρόν.
И҆ и҆стеса́ша сы́нове соломѡ̑ни и҆ сы́нове хїра̑мли и҆ каменосѣ́чцы гева́льстїи: и҆ и҆згото́виша ка́мєнїѧ и҆ древа̀ въ трѝ лѣ̑та.
“Furthermore the men of Biblos [i.e., the Giblites] prepared wood and stones to build the house.” Biblos is a city in Phoenicia that Ezekiel mentions: “Your skilled men, Tyre, were your pilots. The elders of Biblos and its skilled men,” for which [city] in Hebrew is written Gobel or Gebal, which means “defining” or “limiting.” This word is very appropriate to those who prepare people’s hearts for the spiritual edifice that is built of the virtues of the soul. For they are only equal to the task of teaching their hearers faith and the works of righteousness when they themselves have first been instructed by the sacred page and thoroughly learned from a clear definition of the truth what belief one must hold and on what path of virtue one must walk. For one who does not know what is definitely catholic faith is wasting his time assuming the office of teacher, and those who try to teach others the norm that they themselves have not learned do not build a sanctuary for the Lord but ruin for themselves.
Of the Temple of Solomon 1.4.3
And, behold, I intend to build a house to the name of the Lord my God, as the Lord God spoke to my father David, saying, Thy son whom I will set on thy throne in thy place, he shall build a house to my name.
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ λέγω οἰκοδομῆσαι οἶκον τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου Θεοῦ μου, καθὼς ἐλάλησε Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς πρὸς Δαυὶδ τὸν πατέρα μου, λέγων· ὁ υἱός σου, ὃν δώσω ἀντὶ σοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν θρόνον σου, οὗτος οἰκοδομήσει τὸν οἴκον τῷ ὀνόματί μου.
And now command, and let [men] cut wood for me out of Libanus: and, behold, my servants [shall be] with thy servants, and I will give thee the wages of thy service, according to all that thou shalt say, because thou knowest that we have no one skilled in cutting timber like the Sidonians.
καὶ νῦν ἔντειλαι καὶ κοψάτωσάν μοι ξύλα ἐκ τοῦ Λιβάνου, καὶ ἰδοὺ οἱ δοῦλοί μου μετὰ τῶν δούλων σου· καὶ τὸν μισθὸν δουλείας σου δώσω σοι κατὰ πάντα, ὅσα ἂν εἴπῃς, ὅτι σὺ οἶδας ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν εἰδὼς ξύλα κόπτειν καθὼς οἱ Σιδώνιοι.
And it came to pass, as soon as Chiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed [be] God to-day, who has given to David a wise son over this numerous people.
καὶ ἐγενήθη καθὼς ἤκουσε Χιρὰμ τῶν λόγων Σαλωμών, ἐχάρη σφόδρα καὶ εἶπεν· εὐλογητὸς ὁ Θεὸς σήμερον, ὃς ἔδωκε τῷ Δαυὶδ υἱὸν φρόνιμον ἐπὶ τὸν λαὸν τὸν πολὺν τοῦτον
And he sent to Solomon, saying, I have listened concerning all that thou hast sent to me for I will do all thy will: [as for] timber of cedar and fir,
καὶ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς Σαλωμὼν λέγων· ἀκήκοα περὶ πάντων, ὧν ἀπέσταλκας πρός με· ἐγὼ ποιήσω πᾶν θέλημά σου, ξύλα κέδρινα καὶ πεύκινα·
my servants shall bring them down from Libanus to the sea: I will form them [into] rafts, [and bring them] to the place which thou shalt send to me [about]; and I will land them there, and thou shalt take [them] up: and thou shalt do my will, in giving bread to my household.
οἱ δοῦλοί μου κατάξουσιν αὐτὰ ἐκ τοῦ Λιβάνου εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, ἐγὼ θήσομαι αὐτὰ σχεδίας ἕως τοῦ τόπου, οὗ ἐὰν ἀποστείλῃς πρός με, καὶ ἐκτινάξω αὐτὰ ἐκεῖ, καὶ σὺ ἀρεῖς· καὶ ποιήσεις τὸ θέλημά μου, τοῦ δοῦναι ἄρτους τῷ οἴκῳ μου.
So Chiram gave to Solomon cedars, and fir trees, and all his desire.
καὶ ἦν Χιρὰμ διδοὺς τῷ Σαλωμὼν κέδρους καὶ πεύκας καὶ πᾶν θέλημα αὐτοῦ.
And Solomon gave to Chiram twenty thousand measures of wheat as food for his house, and twenty thousand baths of beaten oil thus Solomon gave to Chiram yearly.
καὶ Σαλωμὼν ἔδωκε τῷ Χιρὰμ εἴκοσι χιλιάδας κόρους πυροῦ καὶ μαχεὶρ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἴκοσι χιλιάδας βαὶθ ἐλαίου κεκομμένου· κατὰ τοῦτο ἐδίδου Σαλωμὼν τῷ Χιρὰμ κατ᾿ ἐνιαυτόν.
And the Lord gave wisdom to Solomon as he promised him; and there was peace between Chiram and Solomon, and they made a covenant between them.
καὶ Κύριος ἔδωκε σοφίαν τῷ Σαλωμών, καθὼς ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ· καὶ ἦν εἰρήνη ἀνὰ μέσον Χιρὰμ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Σαλωμών, καὶ διέθεντο διαθήκην ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν.
And the king raised a levy out of all Israel, and the levy was thirty thousand men.
καὶ ἀνήνεγκεν ὁ βασιλεὺς φόρον ἐκ παντὸς ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ ἦν ὁ φόρος τριάκοντα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν.
And he sent them to Libanus, ten thousand taking turn every month: they were a month in Libanus and two months at home: and Adoniram [was] over the levy.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν Λίβανον, δέκα χιλιάδες ἐν τῷ μηνί, ἀλλασσόμενοι, μῆνα ἦσαν ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ καὶ δύο μῆνας ἐν οἴκῳ αὐτῶν· καὶ ᾿Αδωνιρὰμ ἐπὶ τοῦ φόρου.
And Solomon had seventy thousand bearers of burdens, and eighty thousand hewers of stone in the mountain;
καὶ ἦν τῷ Σαλωμὼν ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες αἴροντες ἄρσιν καὶ ὀγδοήκοντα χιλιάδες λατόμων ἐν τῷ ὄρει,
besides the rulers that were appointed over the works of Solomon, [there were] three thousand six hundred masters who wrought in the works.
χωρὶς τῶν ἀρχόντων τῶν καθεσταμένων ἐπὶ τῶν ἔργων τῷ Σαλωμών, τρεῖς χιλιάδες καὶ ἑξακόσιοι ἐπιστάται οἱ ποιοῦντες τὰ ἔργα.
And they prepared the stones and the timber [during] three years. ______ * 1α And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life. 1β And thus the officers provided king Solomon: and [they execute] every one in his month all the orders for the table of the king, they omit nothing.
καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τοὺς λίθους καὶ τὰ ξύλα τρία ἔτη. _________ *
For he had dominion on this side the river, and he was at peace on all sides round about.
ὅτι ἦν ἄρχων πέραν ποταμοῦ, καὶ ἦν αὐτῷ εἰρήνη ἐκ πάντων τῶν μερῶν κυκλόθεν.
и҆ нн҃ѣ ᲂу҆поко́и гдⷭ҇ь бг҃ъ мо́й мнѣ̀ ѡ҆́крестъ, нѣ́сть навѣ́тника, нижѐ сопроти́вника лꙋка́вагѡ:
