Divine Liturgy

Romans 7:14–8:2 § 95

Brethren, we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. I do not understand that which I do. For I do not do what I want; but I do the very thing that I hate. If, then, I do what I do not want to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, within my flesh; for I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good that I want; but the evil which I do not want, is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. I find then to be a law, that evil is present with me, whenever I want to do good. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law, warring with the law of my mind, and making me captive to the law of sin which dwells in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from this body of death? I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh [I serve] the law of sin... There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk after the flesh, but after the Spirit ... For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death...

1 Corinthians 4:9–16 § 131 (Apostles)

Apostles

Prokeimenon, Tone 8

Their proclamation has gone out into all the earth / and their words to the ends of the universe!

Verse: The heavens are telling the Glory of God, and the firmament proclaims His handiwork!

Brethren, I think that God has shown us, the Apostles, last, as men condemned to death; for we have been made a spectacle unto the world, both to Angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, but we are despised! To the present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and beaten, and homeless. And we labor, working with our own hands. Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure; being defamed, we entreat. We have been made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day. I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. For though you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the Gospel. Therefore I beseech you, to follow me.

Alleluia, Tone 1

The heavens shall confess Thy wonders, O Lord, and Thy truth in the congregation of the Saints!

Verse: God is glorified in the council of the Saints!

Communion Hymn

Their proclamation has gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the universe!

Matthew 10.9-15 § 35
9

Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,

10

Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.

11

And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.

12

And when ye come into an house, salute it.

13

And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

14

And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

15

Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
