Zechariah 6
Commentary from 5 fathers
And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, four chariots coming out from between two mountains; and the mountains were brazen mountains.
In the first chariot [were] red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;
and in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot piebald [and] ash-coloured horses.
And I answered and said to the angel that talked with me, What are these, my Lord?
καὶ ἀπεκρίθην καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον τὸν λαλοῦντα ἐν ἐμοί· τί ἐστι ταῦτα, κύριε;
И҆ ѿвѣща́хъ и҆ рѣ́хъ ко а҆́гг҃лꙋ глаго́лющемꙋ во мнѣ̀: что̀ сꙋ́ть сїѧ̑, го́споди;
And the angel that talked with me answered and said, These are the four winds of heaven, [and] they are going forth to stand before the Lord of all the earth.
[As for the chariot] in which were the black horses, they went out to the land of the north; and the white went out after them; and the piebald went out to the land of the south.
And the ash-coloured went out, and looked to go and compass the earth: and he said, Go, and compass the earth. And they compassed the earth.
And he cried out and spoke to me, saying, Behold, these go out to the land of the north, and they have quieted mine anger in the land of the north.
Take the things of the captivity from the chief men, and from the useful men of it, and from them that have understood it; and thou shalt enter in that day into the house of Josias the son of Sophonias that came out of Babylon.
And thou shalt take silver and gold, and make crowns, and thou shalt put [them] upon the head of Jesus the son of Josedec the high priest;
And in the days of Joshua, son of Jehozadak, why did an angel say to the adversary who was opposing him, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan”? And why are the Jews called “sons of Satan” for transgressing the laws, if he [the adversary] perseveres in the command he received and they transgressed the commandment? And why would he be called utterly a liar, he who remains faithful to the rule? Because that evil comes not from him but from the very one who made him so. And why should he be sent into the “outer darkness”?
On God 209
and thou shalt say to him, Thus saith the Lord Almighty; Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall spring up from his stem, and build the house of the Lord.
Nor was there night in Peter when he confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” when the heavenly Father revealed it to him, but there was night in him too at the moment of his denial. And in the present instance, moreover, when Judas received the morsel [and] went out immediately, night was present in him at the same time he went out, for the man whose name is “Sunrise” was not present with him because he left “the Sun of justice” behind when he went out. And Judas, who was filled with darkness, pursued Jesus; but the darkness and the one who had taken it up did not apprehend the light that was pursued. Wherefore also, when he said as word of justification, “I have sinned because I betrayed just blood” and “went and hanged himself,” Satan, who was in him, led him to the noose and hung him, at which time the devil also touched his soul. For Judas was not such that the Lord could say to the devil on his behalf what he said on Job’s behalf, “But touch not his soul.”
Commentary on the Gospel of John 32:315-17
Therefore God helps the city, producing in it early morning by his own rising and coming. “Behold a man,” it is said, “the Orient is his name.” For those upon whom the spiritual light will rise, when the darkness that comes from ignorance and wickedness is destroyed, early morning will be at hand. Since, then, light has come into the world in order that he who walks about in it may not stumble, his help is able to cause the early morning. Or perhaps, since the resurrection was in the dim morning twilight, God will help the city in the morning early, who on the third day, early on the morning of the resurrection gained the victory through death.
Homilies on the Psalms 45:18.5
The inscription, “for the octave,” therefore, that we not look to the present time, but that we look toward the “octave.” For whenever this transitory and fleeting time ceases, in which one thing comes to be and another is dissolved, and the necessity of coming to be has passed away, and that which is dissolved no longer exists … the hebdomad too, which measures time, will by all means halt. Then that “octave,” which is the next age, will succeed it. The whole of the latter becomes one day, as one of the prophets says when he calls the life, which is anticipated “the Great Day.” For this reason the perceptible sun does not enlighten that day, but “the true light,” the “sun of righteousness,” who is designated “rising” by the prophecy because he is never veiled by the settings.
On the Inscriptions of the Psalms 2:5.53
And he shall receive power, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and there shall be a priest on his right hand, and a peaceable counsel shall be between [them] both.
And the crown shall be to them that wait patiently, and to the useful men of the captivity, and to them that have known it, and for the favour of the son of Sophonias, and for a psalm in the house of the Lord.
And they [that are] far from them shall come and build in the house of the Lord, and ye shall know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you: and [this] shall come to pass, if ye will diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord your God.
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
