I will thank thee, O Lord and King, and praise thee, O God my Saviour: I do give praise unto thy name:
ΠΡΟΣΕΥΧΗ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΥΙΟΥ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ. - ᾿Εξομολογήσομαί σοι, Κύριε βασιλεῦ, καὶ αἰνέσω σε Θεὸν τὸν σωτῆρά μου, ἐξομολογοῦμαι τῷ ὀνόματί σου,
Моли́тва і҆исꙋ́са сы́на сїра́хова. И҆сповѣ́мсѧ тебѣ̀, гдⷭ҇и цр҃ю̀, и҆ восхвалю̀ тебѐ, бг҃а сп҃са моего̀, и҆сповѣ́даюсѧ и҆́мени твоемꙋ̀,
For thou art my defender and helper, and has preserved my body from destruction, and from the snare of the slanderous tongue, and from the lips that forge lies, and has been mine helper against mine adversaries:
ὅτι σκεπαστὴς καὶ βοηθὸς ἐγένου μοι καὶ ἐλυτρώσω τὸ σῶμά μου ἐξ ἀπωλείας καὶ ἐκ παγίδος διαβολῆς γλώσσης, ἀπὸ χειλέων ἐργαζομένων ψεῦδος καὶ ἔναντι τῶν παρεστηκότων ἐγένου μοι βοηθὸς
ꙗ҆́кѡ покрови́тель и҆ помо́щникъ бы́лъ є҆сѝ мѝ
And hast delivered me, according to the multitude of thy mercies and greatness of thy name, from the teeth of them that were ready to devour me, and out of the hands of such as sought after my life, and from the manifold afflictions which I had;
καὶ ἐλυτρώσω με κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος ἐλέους καὶ ὀνόματός σου ἐκ βρυγμῶν ἑτοίμων εἰς βρῶμα, ἐκ χειρὸς ζητούντων τὴν ψυχήν μου, ἐκ πλειόνων θλίψεων, ὧν ἔσχον,
и҆ и҆зба́вилъ є҆сѝ тѣ́ло моѐ ѿ па́гꙋбы и҆ ѿ сѣ́ти клеветы̀ ѧ҆зы́чныѧ, ѿ ᲂу҆сте́нъ дѣ́лающихъ лжꙋ̀, и҆ на проти́вѧщихсѧ мѝ бы́лъ є҆сѝ помо́щникъ,
From the depth of the belly of hell, from an unclean tongue, and from lying words.
ἐκ βάθους κοιλίας ᾅδου καὶ ἀπὸ γλώσσης ἀκαθάρτου καὶ λόγου ψευδοῦς.
и҆з̾ глꙋбины̀ чре́ва а҆́дова и҆ ѿ ѧ҆зы́ка нечи́ста и҆ словесѐ ло́жна, ко царю̀ ѿ ѡ҆болга́нїѧ ѧ҆зы́ка непра́ведна.
By an accusation to the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto death, my life was near to the hell beneath.
βασιλεῖ διαβολὴ γλώσσης ἀδίκου. ἤγγισεν ἕως θανάτου ἡ ψυχή μου, καὶ ἡ ζωή μου ἦν σύνεγγυς ᾅδου κάτω.
Прибли́жисѧ да́же до сме́рти дꙋша̀ моѧ̀,
They compassed me on every side, and there was no man to help me: I looked for the succour of men, but there was none.
περιέσχον με πάντοθεν καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ βοηθῶν, ἐνέβλεπον εἰς ἀντίληψιν ἀνθρώπων, καὶ οὐκ ἦν.
Ѡ҆бдержа́ша мѧ̀ ѿвсю́дꙋ, и҆ не бѣ̀ помога́ющагѡ: воззрѣ́хъ на по́мощь человѣ́чꙋ, и҆ не бѣ̀.
Then thought I upon thy mercy, O Lord, and upon thy acts of old, how thou deliverest such as wait for thee, and savest them out of the hands of the enemies.
καὶ ἐμνήσθην τοῦ ἐλέους σου, Κύριε, καὶ τῆς ἐργασίας σου τῆς ἀπ᾿ αἰῶνος, ὅτι ἐξαιρῇ τοὺς ὑπομένοντάς σε καὶ σῴζεις αὐτοὺς ἐκ χειρὸς ἐθνῶν.
И҆ помѧнꙋ́хъ млⷭ҇ть твою̀, гдⷭ҇и, и҆ дѣѧ́нїе твоѐ, є҆́же ѿ вѣ́ка:
Then lifted I up my supplications from the earth, and prayed for deliverance from death.
καὶ ἀνύψωσα ἀπὸ γῆς ἱκετείαν μου καὶ ὑπὲρ θανάτου ῥύσεως ἐδεήθην.
И҆ вознесо́хъ ѿ землѝ моле́нїе моѐ и҆ ѡ҆ и҆збавле́нїи ѿ сме́рти помоли́хсѧ:
I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, that he would not leave me in the days of my trouble, and in the time of the proud, when there was no help.
ἐπεκαλεσάμην Κύριον πατέρα κυρίου μου, μή με ἐγκαταλιπεῖν ἐν ἡμέραις θλίψεως, ἐν καιρῷ ὑπερηφάνων ἀβοηθησίας.
и҆ призва́хъ гдⷭ҇а, ѻ҆ц҃а̀ гдⷭ҇а моегѡ̀, не ѡ҆ста́вити менѐ во дни̑ ско́рби, во вре́мѧ го́рдыхъ без̾ по́мощи.
I will praise thy name continually, and will sing praises with thanksgiving; and so my prayer was heard:
αἰνέσω τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐνδελεχῶς καὶ ὑμνήσω ἐν ἐξομολογήσει. καὶ εἰσηκούσθη ἡ δέησίς μου·
Восхвалю̀ и҆́мѧ твоѐ непреста́ннѡ и҆ воспою̀ тѧ̀ во и҆сповѣ́данїи. И҆ ᲂу҆слы́шана бы́сть моли́тва моѧ̀.
For thou savedst me from destruction, and deliveredst me from the evil time: therefore will I give thanks, and praise thee, and bless thy name, O Lord.
ἔσωσας γάρ με ἐξ ἀπωλείας καὶ ἐξείλου με ἐκ καιροῦ πονηροῦ. διὰ τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαι καὶ αἰνέσω σε καὶ εὐλογήσω τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου.
Спⷭ҇лъ бо мѧ̀ є҆сѝ ѿ па́гꙋбы и҆ и҆з̾ѧ́лъ є҆сѝ мѧ̀ ѿ вре́мене лꙋка́вна.
When I was yet young, or ever I went abroad, I desired wisdom openly in my prayer.
ἔτι ὢν νεώτερος, πρὶν ἢ πλανηθῆναί με, ἐζήτησα σοφίαν προφανῶς ἐν προσευχῇ μου,
Є҆щѐ ю҆́нъ сы́й, пре́жде не́же стра́нствовати мѝ, и҆ска́хъ премꙋ́дрости ꙗ҆́вѣ въ моли́твѣ мое́й:
I prayed for her before the temple, and will seek her out even to the end.
ἔναντι ναοῦ ἠξίουν περὶ αὐτῆς καὶ ἕως ἐσχάτων ἐκζητήσω αὐτήν.
пред̾ це́рковїю моли́хсѧ ѡ҆ не́й, и҆ да́же до послѣ́днихъ взыщꙋ̀ є҆ѧ̀: ѿ цвѣ́та, ꙗ҆́кѡ зрѣ́ющагѡ гро́зда,
After the prayer offered by the author of this book, speaking as the church, he tells how he had sought wisdom from his childhood, having asked it of the Lord. When he says that he sought wisdom before his youth, before the opportune time to ask, he shows to have desired it prior to the errors of childhood and adolescence, and even before his youth, and to have asked insistently that God would give it to him, promising to seek it always. Adolescence and youth are fraught with dangers, because the actions of the exterior person dominate, as Solomon says in the book of Proverbs, confessing that he does not know “the way of a youth in his adolescence,” and the prophet asks the Lord, “Do not recall the sins of my youth and of my ignorance.” For this reason philosophers, representing human life with the letter Y, assign the lefthand stroke to infancy and adolescence and the righthand stroke to the more mature age, when the intellect is more robust and rejects the earlier foolishness of the senses. In fact, this letter was first used by Pythagoras as an example of human life, in such a way that the bottom stroke, thinner than a comma, would indicate the uncertain condition of the earliest age, not yet given to either vice or virtue. The junction above it begins with adolescence, of which the right side is difficult but tends to a blessed life, and the left is easier but leads to perdition and death.
On Ecclesiasticus 10:31
Even from the flower till the grape was ripe hath my heart delighted in her: my foot went the right way, from my youth up sought I after her.
ἐξ ἄνθους ὡς περκαζούσης σταφυλῆς εὐφράνθη ἡ καρδία μου ἐν αὐτῇ. ἐπέβη ὁ πούς μου ἐν εὐθύτητι, ἐκ νεότητός μου ἴχνευσα αὐτήν.
возвесели́сѧ се́рдце моѐ ѡ҆ не́й: по́йде нога̀ моѧ̀ въ пра́вости, ѿ ю҆́ности моеѧ̀ и҆зслѣ́дихъ ю҆̀.
I bowed down mine ear a little, and received her, and gat much learning.
ἔκλινα ὀλίγον τὸ οὖς μου καὶ ἐδεξάμην καὶ πολλὴν εὗρον ἐμαυτῷ παιδείαν.
Приклони́хъ ма́лѡ ᲂу҆́хо моѐ и҆ прїѧ́хъ, и҆ мно́гое ѡ҆брѣто́хъ себѣ̀ наказа́нїе:
I profited therein, therefore will I ascribe glory unto him that giveth me wisdom.
προκοπὴ ἐγένετό μοι ἐν αὐτῇ· τῷ διδόντι μοι σοφίαν δώσω δόξαν.
пред̾ꙋспѣ́ѧнїе бы́сть мѝ въ не́й.
For I purposed to do after her, and earnestly I followed that which is good; so shall I not be confounded.
διενοήθην γὰρ τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτὴν καὶ ἐζήλωσα τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ οὐ μὴ αἰσχυνθῶ.
Оу҆мы́слихъ бо твори́ти ю҆̀, и҆ поревнова́хъ благо́мꙋ, и҆ не постыжꙋ́сѧ.
My soul hath wrestled with her, and in my doings I was exact: I stretched forth my hands to the heaven above, and bewailed my ignorances of her.
διαμεμάχισται ἡ ψυχή μου ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ἐν ποιήσει λιμοῦ διηκριβησάμην. τὰς χεῖράς μου ἐξεπέτασα πρὸς ὕψος καὶ τὰ ἀγνοήματα αὐτῆς ἐπένθησα.
Борѧ́шесѧ дꙋша̀ моѧ̀ ѡ҆ не́й, и҆ въ творе́нїи мое́мъ и҆спыта́хъ:
I directed my soul unto her, and I found her in pureness: I have had my heart joined with her from the beginning, therefore shall I not be forsaken.
τὴν ψυχήν μου κατεύθυνα εἰς αὐτήν, καρδίαν ἐκτησάμην μετ᾿ αὐτῆς ἀπ᾿ ἀρχῆς καὶ ἐν καθαρισμῷ εὗρον αὐτήν, διὰ τοῦτο οὐ μὴ ἐγκαταλειφθῶ·
Дꙋ́шꙋ мою̀ напра́вихъ къ не́й,
My heart was troubled in seeking her: therefore have I gotten a good possession.
καὶ ἡ κοιλία μου ἐταράχθη τοῦ ἐκζητῆσαι αὐτήν· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκτησάμην ἀγαθὸν κτῆμα.
И҆ ᲂу҆тро́ба моѧ̀ смѧте́сѧ и҆́щꙋщи є҆ѧ̀: тѣ́мже стѧжа́хъ благо́е стѧжа́нїе.
The Lord hath given me a tongue for my reward, and I will praise him therewith.
ἔδωκε Κύριος γλῶσσάν μοι μισθόν μου, καὶ ἐν αὐτῇ αἰνέσω αὐτόν.
Дадѐ гдⷭ҇ь ѧ҆зы́къ мѝ мздꙋ̀ мою̀, и҆ тѣ́мъ восхвалю̀ є҆го̀.
Draw near unto me, ye unlearned, and dwell in the house of learning.
ἐγγίσατε πρός με, ἀπαίδευτοι, καὶ αὐλίσθητε ἐν οἴκῳ παιδείας,
Прибли́житесѧ ко мнѣ̀, ненака́заннїи, и҆ водвори́тесѧ въ домꙋ̀ наказа́нїѧ.
The Word of God was directed to us. It was proclaimed to exhort us, as the Scripture says: “Receive instruction in the house of instruction.” Instruction is given so as to instruct, and the house of instruction is the church of Christ. Let us ask ourselves the object and purpose of this instruction: who is instructed, and who imparts the instruction. One learns to live well, and the purpose for which he learns to live well is so as to live forever. To this end Christians are taught, and Christ is the one who teaches.
Sermon 399:1.1
Wherefore are ye slow, and what say ye to these things, seeing your souls are very thirsty?
τί ὅτι ὑστερεῖτε ἐν τούτοις καὶ αἱ ψυχαὶ ὑμῶν διψῶσι σφόδρα;
Почто̀ лиша́етесѧ, глаго́лете, въ си́хъ, и҆ дꙋ́ши ва́шѧ жа́ждꙋтъ ѕѣлѡ̀;
I opened my mouth, and said, Buy her for yourselves without money.
ἤνοιξα τὸ στόμα μου καὶ ἐλάλησα· κτήσασθε ἑαυτοῖς ἄνευ ἀργυρίου.
Ѿверзо́хъ ᲂу҆ста̀ моѧ̑ и҆ глаго́лахъ: стѧжи́те себѣ̀ без̾ сребра̀ (мꙋ́дрость):
Put your neck under the yoke, and let your soul receive instruction: she is hard at hand to find.
τὸν τράχηλον ὑμῶν ὑπόθετε ὑπὸ ζυγόν, καὶ ἐπιδεξάσθω ἡ ψυχὴ ὑμῶν παιδείαν· ἐγγύς ἐστιν εὑρεῖν αὐτήν.
вы́ю ва́шꙋ подложи́те под̾ и҆́го, и҆ да прїи́метъ дꙋша̀ ва́ша наказа́нїе: бли́з̾ є҆́сть ѡ҆брѣстѝ ю҆̀.
Behold with your eyes, how that I have but little labour, and have gotten unto me much rest.
ἴδετε ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ὑμῶν ὅτι ὀλίγον ἐκοπίασα καὶ εὗρον ἐμαυτῷ πολλὴν ἀνάπαυσιν.
Ви́дите ѻ҆чи́ма ва́шима, ꙗ҆́кѡ ма́лѡ трꙋди́хсѧ и҆ ѡ҆брѣто́хъ себѣ̀ мно́гъ поко́й.
Get learning with a great sum of money, and get much gold by her.
μετάσχετε παιδείας ἐν πολλῷ ἀριθμῷ ἀργυρίου καὶ πολὺν χρυσὸν κτήσασθε ἐν αὐτῇ.
Приѡбщи́тесѧ наказа́нїю мно́гимъ число́мъ сребра̀, и҆ мно́го зла́то пристѧ́жете є҆́ю.
Let your soul rejoice in his mercy, and be not ashamed of his praise.
εὐφρανθείη ἡ ψυχὴ ὑμῶν ἐν τῷ ἐλέει αὐτοῦ, καὶ μὴ αἰσχυνθείητε ἐν αἰνέσει αὐτοῦ.
Да возвесели́тсѧ дꙋша̀ ва́ша въ млⷭ҇ти є҆гѡ̀, и҆ да не постыдите́сѧ въ хвале́нїи є҆гѡ̀.
Work your work betimes, and in his time he will give you your reward.
ἐργάζεσθε τὸ ἔργον ὑμῶν πρὸ καιροῦ, καὶ δώσει τὸν μισθὸν ὑμῶν ἐν καιρῷ αὐτοῦ.
Дѣ́лайте дѣ́ло ва́ше пре́жде вре́мене, и҆ да́стъ мздꙋ̀ ва́шꙋ во вре́мѧ своѐ.
From the choking of fire on every side, and from the midst of the fire which I kindled not;
ἀπὸ πνιγμοῦ πυρᾶς κυκλόθεν καὶ ἐκ μέσου πυρός, οὗ οὐκ ἐξέκαυσα.
ѿ стꙋжа́нїѧ ѻ҆́гненнагѡ ѡ҆́крестъ и҆ ѿ среды̀ ѻ҆гнѧ̀, и҆дѣ́же не сожего́хсѧ,
