And the Lord said to Joshua, Fear not, nor be timorous: take with thee all the men of war, and arise, go up to Gai; behold, I have given into thy hands the king of Gai, and his land.
ΚΑΙ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς ᾿Ιησοῦν· μὴ φοβηθῇς μηδὲ δειλιάσῃς, λάβε μετὰ σοῦ πάντας τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς πολεμιστὰς καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀνάβηθι εἰς Γαί· ἰδοὺ δέδωκα εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου τὸν βασιλέα Γαὶ καὶ τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ.
И҆ речѐ гдⷭ҇ь ко і҆исꙋ́сꙋ: не бо́йсѧ, нижѐ ᲂу҆жаса́йсѧ: поимѝ съ собо́ю всѧ̑ мꙋ́жы вѡ́инскїѧ, и҆ воста́въ взы́ди въ га́й: сѐ, преда́хъ въ рꙋ́цѣ твоѝ царѧ̀ га́йска и҆ зе́млю є҆гѡ̀, и҆ лю́ди є҆гѡ̀ и҆ гра́дъ є҆гѡ̀:
And Joshua and all the men of war rose to go up to Gai; and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men, and he sent them away by night.
καὶ ἀνέστη ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ πολεμιστὴς ὥστε ἀναβῆναι εἰς Γαί. ἐπέλεξε δὲ ᾿Ιησοῦς τριάκοντα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν δυνατοὺς ἐν ἰσχύϊ καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς νυκτός.
И҆ воста̀ і҆исꙋ́съ и҆ всѝ мꙋ́жїе во́инстїи, да вни́дꙋтъ въ га́й: и҆ и҆збра̀ і҆исꙋ́съ три́десѧть ты́сѧщъ мꙋже́й во́инскихъ си́льныхъ крѣ́постїю и҆ посла̀ и҆̀хъ но́щїю,
And he charged them, saying, Do ye lie in ambush behind the city: do not go far from the city, and ye shall all be ready.
καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς λέγων· ὑμεῖς ἐνεδρεύσατε ὀπίσω τῆς πόλεως· μὴ μακρὰν γίνεσθε ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἔσεσθε πάντες ἕτοιμοι.
и҆ заповѣ́да и҆̀мъ, глаго́лѧ: вы̀ скры́йтесѧ за гра́домъ: не дале́че бꙋ́дите ѿ гра́да ѕѣлѡ̀, и҆ бꙋ́дите всѝ гото́ви:
And I and all with me will draw near to the city: and it shall come to pass when the inhabitants of Gai shall come forth to meet us, as before, that we will flee from before them.
καὶ ἐγὼ καὶ πάντες οἱ μετ’ ἐμοῦ προσάξομεν πρὸς τὴν πόλιν, καὶ ἔσται ὡς ἂν ἐξέλθωσιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες Γαὶ εἰς συνάντησιν ἡμῖν, καθάπερ καὶ πρῴην, καὶ φευξόμεθα ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν.
а҆́зъ же и҆ всѝ лю́дїе и҆̀же со мно́ю пристꙋ́пимъ ко гра́дꙋ: и҆ бꙋ́детъ є҆гда̀ и҆зы́дꙋтъ живꙋ́щїи въ гаѝ въ срѣ́тенїе на́мъ, ꙗ҆́коже и҆ пре́жде, и҆ побѣ́гнемъ ѿ лица̀ и҆́хъ:
And when they shall come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, These men flee from before us, as also before.
καὶ ὡς ἂν ἐξέλθωσιν ὀπίσω ἡμῶν, ἀποσπάσομεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως, καὶ ἐροῦσι· φεύγουσιν οὗτοι ἀπὸ προσώπου ἡμῶν, ὃν τρόπον καὶ ἔμπροσθεν.
и҆ є҆гда̀ и҆зы́дꙋтъ в̾слѣ́дъ на́съ, ѿто́ргнемъ и҆̀хъ ѿ гра́да: и҆ рекꙋ́тъ: бѣжа́тъ сі́и ѿ лица̀ на́шегѡ, ꙗ҆́коже и҆ пре́жде:
And ye shall rise up out of the ambuscade, and go into the city.
ὑμεῖς δὲ ἐξαναστήσεσθε ἐκ τῆς ἐνέδρας καὶ πορεύσεσθε εἰς τὴν πόλιν.
вы́ же воста́нете ѿ подса́ды, и҆ по́йдете во гра́дъ, и҆ преда́стъ є҆го̀ гдⷭ҇ь бг҃ъ на́шъ въ рꙋ́цѣ ва́ши:
Ye shall do according to this word, lo! I have commanded you.
κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο ποιήσετε· ἰδοὺ ἐντέταλμαι ὑμῖν.
и҆ бꙋ́детъ є҆гда̀ во́змете гра́дъ, запали́те є҆го̀ ѻ҆гне́мъ, по словесѝ семꙋ̀ сотвори́те: сѐ, заповѣ́даю ва́мъ.
And Joshua sent them, and they went to lie in ambush; and they lay between Baethel and Gai, westward of Gai.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς ᾿Ιησοῦς, καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν εἰς τὴν ἐνέδραν καὶ ἐνεκάθισαν ἀνὰ μέσον Βαιθὴλ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Γαί, ἀπὸ θαλάσσης τῆς Γαί.
И҆ посла̀ и҆̀хъ і҆исꙋ́съ, и҆ и҆до́ша въ подса́дꙋ: и҆ сѣдо́ша междꙋ̀ веѳи́лемъ и҆ междꙋ̀ га́їемъ, ѿ мо́рѧ га́їа.
And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people; and he went up, he and the elders before the people to Gai.
καὶ ὀρθρίσας ᾿Ιησοῦς τὸ πρωΐ ἐπεσκέψατο τὸν λαόν· καὶ ἀνέβησαν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ λαοῦ ἐπὶ Γαί.
И҆ воста́въ і҆исꙋ́съ заꙋ́тра, соглѧ́да лю́ди: и҆ взы́де са́мъ и҆ ста́рцы і҆и҃льтестїи пред̾ людьмѝ въ га́й.
And all the men of war went up with him, and they went forward and came over against the city eastward.
καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ πολεμιστὴς μετ’ αὐτοῦ ἀνέβησαν καὶ πορευόμενοι ἦλθον ἐξεναντίας τῆς πόλεως ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν,
И҆ всѝ лю́дїе во́инстїи съ ни́мъ взыдо́ша, и҆ и҆дꙋ́ще прїидо́ша сопроти́въ гра́да ѿ восто́кѡвъ: и҆ подса̑ды гра́да ѿ мо́рѧ.
And the ambuscade [was] on the west side of the city.
καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα τῆς πόλεως ἀπὸ θαλάσσης.
И҆ ѡ҆полчи́шасѧ ѿ сѣ́вера га́їа, и҆ (бы́сть) де́брь междꙋ̀ и҆́ми и҆ междꙋ̀ га́їемъ. И҆ взѧ̀ ꙗ҆́кѡ пѧ́ть ты́сѧщъ мꙋже́й, и҆ положѝ и҆̀хъ на подса́дꙋ междꙋ̀ веѳи́лемъ и҆ га́їемъ ѿ за́пада га́їа.
12–16At first, we were overcome because of sins, and those who were living in Ai destroyed very many of us. Ai means chaos. But we know chaos to be the place or habitation of opposing powers, of which the devil is the king and chief. Against him, as Jesus [Joshua] comes, he divides the people into two parts; he stations some in the front and others in the rear, so they may come behind the enemies unexpectedly. Consider if the first part is not about the people of whom he says, "I came only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel," and of whom the apostle says, "But grace and peace to every person who does good, to the Jew first, then also to the Greek," that is, the later Gentile. Those are the people, therefore, who are stationed in the front and seem to flee with Jesus. But the people in back are the ones who are gathered from the nations and who come unexpectedly. For who expected the nations to be saved? They strike more keenly behind the adversaries, and thus both people together overthrow and conquer the throng of demons confined in the middle.

And it came to pass when the king of Gai saw [it], he hasted and went out to meet them direct to the battle, he and all the people [that were] with him: and he knew not that there was an ambuscade [formed] against him behind the city.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς εἶδε βασιλεὺς Γαί, ἔσπευσε καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτοῖς ἐπ’ εὐθείας εἰς τὸν πόλεμον, αὐτὸς καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ὁ μετ’ αὐτοῦ. καὶ αὐτὸς οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι ἔνεδρα αὐτῷ ἐστιν ὀπίσω τῆς πόλεως.
И҆ бы́сть є҆гда̀ ᲂу҆ви́дѣ ца́рь га́йскїй, потща́сѧ, и҆ воста̀ ра́нѡ и҆ и҆зы́де въ срѣ́тенїе и҆̀мъ прѧ́мѡ на бра́нь, са́мъ и҆ всѝ лю́дїе є҆гѡ̀ съ ни́мъ во вре́мѧ, пред̾ лице́мъ подса́ды: ѻ҆́нъ же не вѣ́дѧше, ꙗ҆́кѡ подса́да є҆мꙋ̀ є҆́сть за гра́домъ (є҆гѡ̀).
And Joshua and Israel saw, and retreated from before them.
καὶ εἶδε καὶ ἀνεχώρησεν ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν.
И҆ ᲂу҆ви́дѣ, и҆ ѿи́де і҆исꙋ́съ и҆ ве́сь лю́дъ ѿ лица̀ и҆́хъ, и҆ побѣжѐ пꙋте́мъ пꙋсты́ни.
15–16But perhaps you say to me, "In what manner are the people in front placed as though fleeing?" In a most suitable manner. For truly, those who follow Jesus seem to flee from legal burdens and precepts, from the observation of the sabbath, from the circumcision of the flesh, and from cutting the throats of enemies. But on the other hand, the one who has followed Christ, the fulfillment and fullness of the law, does not flee.
Homilies on Joshua 8.2
15–16But another thing occurs to me in this place as I consider Jesus [Joshua] fleeing before the face of the army of Ai. Why do you think it is that Jesus [Joshua] is described as fleeing? Let us consider whether perhaps there may be something that we may conquer by fleeing, and that there is some perfect virtue in flight. Paul the apostle teaches us saying, "Flee fornication." You see therefore that there is a certain "spirit of fornication" that we ought to flee, all who wish to remain chastely and piously and modestly in Christ. Thus this flight is that which holds salvation; this flight is of power; this flight confers blessedness. And not only must the spirit of fornication be fled, but in like manner, just as it is said, "Flee fornication," let us hear it said to us: "Flee wrath, flee avarice, flee greed and envy, flee detractions and slanders." Yet I do not know if anyone may flee these things; I do not know if anyone may escape them.Such was that army of Ai that Jesus [Joshua] instructed his soldiers to flee, and perhaps concerning these things he charged his disciples, saying, "If they persecute you in this city, flee into another one; but if in that one also, flee into another." For he wants us to flee from enemies of this kind; he wants us to be put out of reach of this kind of evil. If we are able in the meantime to escape the contagions of these evils by fleeing, then, seeing the devotion and intention of our heart, all those holy powers—those perhaps about which the apostle Paul says, "Are they not all ministering spirits sent into the ministry for the sake of those who will receive the inheritance of salvation?"9—who perhaps are holy angels who, seeing us exposed to pursuing demons, rise up against those who pursue us and, striking from behind, destroy them all. For Jesus is with those who are exposed to the ones pursuing, more than with those who follow after. And justly, because Jesus loves to be with those who flee fornication, those who flee pride, those who flee deceit, and those who flee falsehood.
Homilies on Joshua 8.6
And they pursued after the children of Israel, and they themselves went to a distance from the city.
καὶ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ισραὴλ καὶ αὐτοὶ ἀπέστησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως·
И҆ ᲂу҆крѣпи́сѧ ве́сь лю́дъ гна́ти в̾слѣ́дъ и҆́хъ, и҆ погна́ша в̾слѣ́дъ сынѡ́въ і҆и҃левыхъ, и҆ ѿстꙋпи́ша ѿ гра́да.
There was no one left in Gai who did not pursue after Israel; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
οὐ κατελείφθη οὐδεὶς ἐν τῇ Γαί, ὃς οὐ κατεδίωξεν ὀπίσω ᾿Ισραήλ· καὶ κατέλιπον τὴν πόλιν ἠνεῳγμένην καὶ κατεδίωξαν ὀπίσω ᾿Ισραήλ.
(И҆) не ѡ҆ста́сѧ никто́же въ гаѝ и҆ веѳи́ли, и҆́же не погна̀ в̾слѣ́дъ і҆и҃лѧ: и҆ ѡ҆ста́виша гра́дъ ѿве́рстъ, и҆ гна́ша в̾слѣ́дъ і҆и҃лѧ.
And the Lord said to Joshua, Stretch forth thy hand with the spear that is in thy hand toward the city, for I have delivered it into thy hands; and the liers in wait shall rise up quickly out of their place.
καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς ᾿Ιησοῦν· ἔκτεινον τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐν τῷ γαισῷ τῷ ἐν τῇ χειρί σου ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν, εἰς γὰρ τὰς χεῖράς σου παραδέδωκα αὐτήν, καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα ἐξαναστήσονται ἐν τάχει ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν. καὶ ἐξέτεινεν ᾿Ιησοῦς τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ, τὸν γαισόν, ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν,
И҆ речѐ гдⷭ҇ь ко і҆исꙋ́сꙋ: прострѝ рꙋ́кꙋ твою̀ съ копїе́мъ, є҆́же въ рꙋцѣ̀ твое́й, на гра́дъ, занѐ въ рꙋ́кꙋ твою̀ преда́хъ є҆го̀: и҆ подса̑ды воста́нꙋтъ вско́рѣ ѿ мѣ́ста своегѡ̀. И҆ прострѐ і҆исꙋ́съ рꙋ́кꙋ свою̀ и҆ съ копїе́мъ на гра́дъ.
And Joshua stretched out his hand [and] his spear toward the city, and the ambuscade rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and burnt the city with fire.
καὶ τὰ ἔνεδρα ἐξανέστησαν ἐν τάχει ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν καὶ ἐξήλθοσαν, ὅτε ἐξέτεινε τὴν χεῖρα, καὶ εἰσήλθοσαν ἐπὶ τὴν πόλιν καὶ κατελάβοντο αὐτὴν καὶ σπεύσαντες ἐνέπρησαν τὴν πόλιν ἐν πυρί.
И҆ подса̑ды воста́ша ско́рѡ ѿ мѣ́ста своегѡ̀: и҆ и҆зыдо́ша, є҆гда̀ прострѐ рꙋ́кꙋ, и҆ внидо́ша во гра́дъ, и҆ взѧ́ша є҆го̀: и҆ потща́вшесѧ запали́ша гра́дъ ѻ҆гне́мъ.
And when the inhabitants of Gai looked round behind them, then they saw the smoke going up out of the city to heaven, and they were no longer able to flee this way or that way.
καὶ περιβλέψαντες οἱ κάτοικοι Γαὶ εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω αὐτῶν καὶ ἐθεώρουν καπνὸν ἀναβαίνοντα ἐκ τῆς πόλεως εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν· καὶ οὐκ ἔτι εἶχον ποῦ φύγωσιν ὧδε ἢ ὧδε.
И҆ ѡ҆зрѣ́вшесѧ ѡ҆бита́тєли га́йстїи вспѧ́ть себє̀, ᲂу҆зрѣ́ша ды́мъ восходѧ́щь ѿ гра́да до небесѐ, и҆ ктомꙋ̀ не и҆мѣ́ша ка́мѡ побѣ́гнꙋти, сѣ́мѡ и҆лѝ ѻ҆ва́мѡ: лю́дїе же бѣгꙋ́щїи въ пꙋсты́ню ѡ҆брати́шасѧ на гонѧ́щихъ.
And Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambuscade had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city went up to heaven; and they turned and smote the men of Gai.
καὶ ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ πᾶς ᾿Ισραὴλ εἶδον ὅτι ἔλαβον τὰ ἔνεδρα τὴν πόλιν καὶ ὅτι ἀνέβη ὁ καπνὸς τῆς πόλεως εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν, καὶ μεταβαλόμενοι ἐπάταξαν τοὺς ἄνδρας τῆς Γαί.
І҆исꙋ́съ же и҆ ве́сь і҆и҃ль ᲂу҆ви́дѣша, ꙗ҆́кѡ взѧ́ша подса̑ды гра́дъ, и҆ ꙗ҆́кѡ восхо́дитъ ды́мъ гра́дный до небесѐ: и҆ ѡ҆брати́вшесѧ и҆зби́ша мꙋже́й га́йскихъ.
And these came forth out of the city to meet them; and they were in the midst of the army, some [being] on this side, and some on that; and they smote them until there was not left of them one who survived and escaped.
καὶ οὗτοι ἐξήλθοσαν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως εἰς συνάντησιν καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς παρεμβολῆς, οὗτοι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ οὗτοι ἐντεῦθεν· καὶ ἐπάταξαν αὐτοὺς ἕως τοῦ μὴ καταλειφθῆναι αὐτῶν σεσωσμένον καὶ διαπεφευγότα.
И҆ сі́и и҆зыдо́ша и҆з̾ гра́да проти́вꙋ и҆̀мъ, и҆ бы́ша посредѣ̀ полка̀ і҆и҃лева, сі́и ѿсю́дꙋ и҆ сі́и ѿѻнꙋ́дꙋ: и҆ и҆зби́ша и҆̀хъ, до́ндеже не ѡ҆ста́сѧ ни є҆ди́нъ ѿ ни́хъ цѣ́лъ, ни ᲂу҆бѣжа̀.
You will read in the Holy Scriptures about the battles of the just ones, about the slaughter and carnage of murderers, and that the saints spare none of their deeply rooted enemies. If they do spare them, they are even charged with sin, just as Saul was charged because he had preserved the life of Agag king of Amalek. You should understand the wars of the just by the method I set forth above, that these wars are waged by them against sin. But how will the just ones endure if they reserve even a little bit of sin? Therefore, this is said of them: “They did not leave behind even one who might be saved or might escape.”Do you perhaps not believe me that the battle is joined against our sin? Then believe Paul as he says, “Not yet to the shedding of blood have you resisted against sin.” Do you see that the fight proposed for you is against sin and that you must complete the battle even to the shedding of blood? Is it not evident that the divine Scripture indicates these things, even as it habitually says, “Sanctify war,” and, “You will fight the battle of the Lord”?
Homilies on Joshua 8.7
When the Jews read these things, they become cruel and thirst after human blood, thinking that even holy persons so struck those who were living in Ai that not one of them was left “who might be saved or who might escape.” They do not understand that mysteries are dimly shadowed in these words and that they more truly indicate to us that we ought not to leave any of those demons deeply within, whose dwelling place is chaos and who rule in the abyss, but to destroy them all. We slay demons, but we do not annihilate their essence. For their work and endeavor is to cause persons to sin. If we sin, they have life; but if we do not sin, they are destroyed. Therefore, all holy persons kill the inhabitants of Ai; they both annihilate and do not release any of them. These are doubtless those who guard their heart with all diligence so that evil thoughts do not proceed from it, and those who heed their mouth, so that “no evil word” proceeds from it. Not to leave any who flee means this: when no evil word escapes them.

And they took the king of Gai alive, and brought him to Joshua.
καὶ τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Γαὶ συνέλαβον ζῶντα καὶ προσήγαγον αὐτὸν πρὸς ᾿Ιησοῦν.
И҆ царѧ̀ га́йска ꙗ҆́ша жи́ва, и҆ приведо́ша є҆го̀ ко і҆исꙋ́сꙋ.
And when the children of Israel had ceased slaying all that were in Gai, and in the fields, and in the mountain on the descent, from whence they pursued them [even] to the end, then Joshua returned to Gai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
καὶ ὡς ἐπαύσαντο οἱ υἱοὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἀποκτείνοντες πάντας τοὺς ἐν τῇ Γαί, τοὺς ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις καὶ ἐν τῷ ὄρει ἐπὶ τῆς καταβάσεως, οὗ κατεδίωξαν αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ αὐτῆς εἰς τέλος, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν ᾿Ιησοῦς εἰς Γαὶ καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὴν ἐν στόματι ρομφαίας.
И҆ бы́сть є҆гда̀ преста́ша сы́нове і҆и҃лєвы сѣкꙋ́ще всѣ́хъ сꙋ́щихъ въ гаѝ и҆ сꙋ́щихъ на полѧ́хъ и҆ на горѣ̀ и҆схо́да, и҆дѣ́же гони́ша и҆̀хъ, и҆ падо́ша всѝ ѻ҆́стрїемъ меча̀ на не́й до конца̀: и҆ ѡ҆брати́сѧ і҆исꙋ́съ въ га́й и҆ посѣчѐ и҆̀хъ мече́мъ.
And they that fell in that day, men and women, were twelve thousand: [they slew] all the inhabitants of Gai.
καὶ ἐγενήθησαν οἱ πεσόντες ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς καὶ ἕως γυναικὸς δώδεκα χιλιάδες, πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Γαί,
И҆ бы́ша всѝ па́дшїи въ то́й де́нь ѿ мꙋ́жеска по́лꙋ и҆ до же́нска двана́десѧть ты́сѧщъ, всѝ живꙋ́щїи въ гаѝ.
Beside the spoils that were in the city, all things which the children of Israel took as spoil for themselves according to the command of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Joshua.
πλὴν τῶν κτηνῶν καὶ τῶν σκύλων τῶν ἐν τῇ πόλει, πάντα ἃ ἐπρονόμευσαν ἑαυτοῖς οἱ υἱοὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ κατὰ πρόσταγμα Κυρίου, ὃν τρόπον συνέταξε Κύριος τῷ ᾿Ιησοῖ.
Кромѣ̀ скотѡ́въ (и҆́хъ) и҆ и҆мѣ́нїѧ, ꙗ҆̀же во гра́дѣ ѻ҆́нѣмъ, всѧ̑ плѣни́ша себѣ̀ сы́нове і҆и҃лєвы по повелѣ́нїю гдⷭ҇ню, ꙗ҆́коже повелѣ̀ гдⷭ҇ь і҆исꙋ́сꙋ.
And Joshua burnt the city with fire: he made it an uninhabited heap for ever, [even] to this day.
καὶ ἐνεπύρισεν ᾿Ιησοῦς τὴν πόλιν ἐν πυρί· χῶμα ἀοίκητον εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἔθηκεν αὐτὴν ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
И҆ запалѝ гра́дъ і҆исꙋ́съ ѻ҆гне́мъ: зе́млю неѡбита́емꙋ во вѣ́къ положѝ є҆го̀ да́же до сегѡ̀ днѐ.
You see that these things that follow truly pertain more to the truth of a mystery than that of history. For it is not so much that a piece of land is forever uninhabitable, but that the place of demons will be uninhabitable when no one will sin and sin will not rule in anyone. Then the devil and his angels will be consigned to the eternal fire with our Lord Jesus Christ sitting as ruler and judge and saying to those who overcame before and afterwards, “Come, blessed of my Father, take possession of the kingdom that was created for you by my Father.” But to the others he will say, “Go into the eternal fire that God prepared for the devil and his angels.” until he takes care of every soul with the remedies he himself knows and “all Israel may be saved.”

And he hanged the king of Gai on a gallows; and he remained on the tree till evening: and when the sun went down, Joshua gave charge, and they took down his body from the tree, and cast it into a pit, and they set over him a heap of stones until this day.
καὶ τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Γαὶ ἐκρέμασεν ἐπὶ ξύλου διδύμου, καὶ ἦν ἐπὶ τοῦ ξύλου ἕως ἑσπέρας· καὶ ἐπιδύνοντος τοῦ ἡλίου συνέταξεν ᾿Ιησοῦς καὶ καθείλοσαν τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ ξύλου καὶ ἔρριψαν αὐτὸ εἰς τὸν βόθρον καὶ ἐπέστησαν αὐτῷ σωρὸν λίθων, ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
И҆ царѧ̀ га́йска повѣ́си на дре́вѣ сꙋгꙋ́бѣмъ: и҆ бѧ́ше на дре́вѣ до ве́чера: и҆ заходѧ́щꙋ со́лнцꙋ повелѣ̀ і҆исꙋ́съ, и҆ снѧ́ша тѣ́ло є҆гѡ̀ съ дре́ва, и҆ поверго́ша є҆̀ въ ро́въ пред̾ враты̀ гра́да: и҆ насы́па над̾ ни́мъ грома́дꙋ вели́кꙋ ка́менїѧ да́же до сегѡ̀ днѐ.
And thou shalt do to Gai, as thou didst to Jericho and its king; and thou shalt take to thyself the spoil of its cattle; set now for thyself an ambush for the city behind.
καὶ ποιήσεις τὴν Γαὶ ὃν τρόπον ἐποίησας τὴν ῾Ιεριχὼ καὶ τὸν βασιλέα αὐτῆς, καὶ τὴν προνομὴν τῶν κτηνῶν προνομεύσεις σεαυτῷ. κατάστησον δὲ σεαυτῷ ἔνεδρα τῇ πόλει εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω.
и҆ да сотвори́ши га́ю и҆ царю̀ є҆гѡ̀, ꙗ҆́коже сотвори́лъ є҆сѝ і҆ерїхѡ́нꙋ и҆ царю̀ є҆гѡ̀: и҆ плѣ́нъ є҆гѡ̀ и҆ скоты̀ є҆гѡ̀ да плѣни́ши себѣ̀: ᲂу҆стро́й же себѣ̀ подса́дꙋ гра́дꙋ за собо́ю.
