And their borders were from the south as far as a part of the salt sea from the high country that extends southward.
καὶ ἐγενήθη αὐτῶν τὰ ὅρια ἀπὸ λιβὸς ἕως μέρους θαλάσσης τῆς ἁλυκῆς, ἀπὸ τῆς λοφιᾶς τῆς φερούσης ἐπὶ λίβα
и҆ бы́ша предѣ́лы и҆́хъ ѿ полꙋ́дне до ча́сти мо́рѧ сла́нагѡ, ѿ верха̀ клонѧ́щагѡсѧ къ ю҆́гꙋ,
And they proceed before the ascent of Acrabin, and go out round Sena, and go up from the south to Cades Barne; and go out to Asoron, and proceed up to Sarada, and go out by the way that is west of Cades.
καὶ διαπορεύεται ἀπέναντι τῆς προσαναβάσεως ᾿Ακραβὶν καὶ ἐκπεριπορεύεται Σενὰ καὶ ἀναβαίνει ἀπὸ λιβὸς ἐπὶ Κάδης Βαρνὴ καὶ ἐκπορεύεται ᾿Ασωρὼν καὶ προσαναβαίνει εἰς Σάραδα καὶ ἐκπορεύεται τὴν κατὰ δυσμὰς Κάδης
и҆ прохо́дѧтъ прѧ́мѡ восхожде́нїю а҆кравві́мъ, и҆ ѡ҆бхо́дѧтъ сена̀, и҆ восхо́дѧтъ ѿ ю҆́га до ка́дисъ-варнѝ: и҆ и҆схо́дѧтъ и҆з̾ є҆срѡ́на, и҆ восхо́дѧтъ во а҆дда́рꙋ, и҆ и҆схо́дѧтъ на за́пады ка́дисъ, ѡ҆бхо́дѧтъ а҆ккаркѝ,
But also we must go up the ascent of the hills of Akrabbim, which means "scorpions." Thus it is necessary for us to pass over and even tread down scorpions, about which the Savior says, "Behold, I have given you the authority to tread over serpents and scorpions." Whoever therefore wishes and longs to enter into the inheritance of the tribe of Judah must go up these ascents and tread down and escape from scorpions that stand in the way. For this reason, I think that the Lord said to the prophet Ezekiel making this journey, "Son of man, you dwell in the midst of scorpions."

"And the borders," it says, "are all the way to Kadesh." Kadesh means "holy" or "sanctification." Therefore, the borders of Judah reach all the way to sanctification.

And their boundaries eastward [are] all the salt sea as far as Jordan; and their borders from the north, and from the border of the sea, and from part of Jordan--
καὶ τὰ ὅρια ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν· πᾶσα ἡ θάλασσα ἡ ἁλυκὴ ἕως τοῦ ᾿Ιορδάνου. καὶ τὰ ὅρια αὐτῶν ἀπὸ βορρᾶ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς λοφιᾶς τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ μέρους τοῦ ᾿Ιορδάνου·
И҆ предѣ́лы ѿ востѡ́къ, всѐ мо́ре сла́ное да́же до ча́сти і҆ѻрда́на, и҆ предѣ́лы и҆́хъ къ сѣ́верꙋ, и҆ ѿ верха̀ мо́рѧ, и҆ ѿ ча́сти і҆ѻрда́нски:
5–7Everyone, therefore, who wants to enter into the portion of the children of Judah must first pass through the Salt Sea. That is to say, he must surmount the waves and billows of this life and escape from all things in this world that, by virtue of their own uncertainty and hazardousness, are compared with the waves of the sea. Then he may be able to reach the land of Judah and to approach the fountain of the sun. But what is the fountain of the sun, or of which sun? Of that sun, of course, about which it is written, "But for the ones fearing my name, the sun of righteousness will arise." Therefore you will find the fountain of this sun in the land of Judah, if you move away from the Salt Sea. Which fountain? That one of which Jesus said, "The water that I give will become a fountain of water leaping up into eternal life within the person who drinks from it." Therefore, when you have found the kind of fountain of this sun that we have described, you will also find its city.

ἐπιβαίνει τὰ ὅρια ἐπὶ Βαιθαγλὰ καὶ παραπορεύεται ἀπὸ Βορρᾶ ἐπὶ Βαιθάραβα, καὶ προσαναβαίνει τὰ ὅρια ἐπὶ λίθον Βαιὼν υἱοῦ Ῥουβήν,

And the borders continue on to the fourth part of the valley of Achor, and go down to Galgal, which is before the approach of Addamin, which is southward in the valley, and terminate at the water of the fountain of the sun; and their going forth shall be the fountain of Rogel.
καὶ προσαναβαίνει τὰ ὅρια ἐπὶ τὸ τέταρτον τῆς φάραγγος ᾿Αχὼρ καὶ καταβαίνει ἐπὶ Γαλγάλ, ἥ ἐστιν ἀπέναντι τῆς προσβάσεως ᾿Αδδαμίν, ἥ ἐστι κατὰ λίβα τῇ φάραγγι, καὶ διεκβάλλει ἐπὶ τὸ ὕδωρ πηγῆς τοῦ ἡλίου, καὶ ἔσται αὐτοῦ ἡ διέξοδος πηγὴ Ῥωγήλ,
и҆ восхо́дѧтъ предѣ́лы къ деві́рꙋ де́бри а҆хѡ́ровы, и҆ низхо́дѧтъ до галга́лы, ꙗ҆́же є҆́сть прѧ́мѡ схожде́нїю а҆доммі́нъ, и҆́же є҆́сть къ ю҆́гꙋ де́бри, и҆ восхо́дитъ предѣ́лъ къ водѣ̀ и҆сто́чника со́лнечна, и҆ бꙋ́детъ и҆схо́дъ є҆гѡ̀ и҆сто́чникъ рѡги́ль:
And the borders go up to the valley of Onom, behind Jebus southward; this is Jerusalem: and the borders terminate at the top of the mountain, which is before the valley of Onom toward the sea, which is by the side of the land of Raphain northward.
καὶ ἀναβαίνει τὰ ὅρια εἰς φάραγγα ᾿Ονὸμ ἐπὶ νώτου ᾿Ιεβοῦς ἀπὸ λιβὸς (αὕτη ἐστὶν ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ) καὶ διεκβάλλει τὰ ὅρια ἐπὶ κορυφὴν ὄρους, ἥ ἐστι κατὰ πρόσωπον φάραγγος ᾿Ονὸμ πρὸς θαλάσσης, ἥ ἐστιν ἐκ μέρους γῆς Ῥαφαΐν ἐπὶ βορρᾶ,
и҆ восхо́дѧтъ предѣ́лы въ де́брь є҆нно́мъ, созадѝ і҆евꙋ́са ѿ полꙋ́дне, се́й є҆́сть і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мъ: и҆ и҆схо́дѧтъ предѣ́лы на ве́рхъ горы̀, ꙗ҆́же є҆́сть пред̾ лице́мъ де́бри є҆нно́мъ къ мо́рю, ꙗ҆́же є҆́сть ѿ ча́сти землѝ рафаі́нъ къ сѣ́верꙋ:
And the border [going forth] from the top of the mountain terminates at the fountain of the water of Naphtho, and terminates at mount Ephron; and the border will lead to Baal; this is the city of Jarim.
καὶ διεκβάλλει τὸ ὅριον ἀπὸ κορυφῆς τοῦ ὄρους ἐπὶ πηγὴν ὕδατος Ναφθὼ καὶ διεκβάλλει εἰς τὸ ὄρος ᾿Εφρών, καὶ ἄξει τὸ ὅριον εἰς Βαὰλ (αὕτη ἐστὶ πόλις ᾿Ιαρίμ),
и҆ прехо́дитъ предѣ́лъ ѿ верха̀ горы̀ ко и҆сто́чникꙋ воды̀ нафѳѡ̀ и҆ прехо́дитъ къ горѣ̀ є҆фрѡ́ни, и҆ и҆зведе́тъ предѣ́лъ въ ваа́лъ, се́й є҆́сть гра́дъ і҆арі́мъ:
And the border will go round from Baal to the sea, and will go on to the mount of Assar behind the city of Jarin northwards; this is Chaslon: and it will come down to the city of Sun, and will go on to the south.
καὶ περιελεύσεται ὅριον ἀπὸ Βαὰλ ἐπὶ θάλασσαν καὶ παρελεύσεται εἰς ὄρος ᾿Ασσὰρ ἐπὶ νώτου, Πόλιν ᾿Ιαρὶν ἀπὸ βορρᾶ (αὕτη ἐστὶ Χασλὼν) καὶ καταβήσεται ἐπὶ Πόλιν ἡλίου καὶ παρελεύσεται ἐπὶ λίβα,
и҆ ѡ҆бы́детъ предѣ́лъ ѿ ваа́ла къ мо́рю и҆ пре́йдетъ въ го́рꙋ сиі́ръ, и҆ пре́йдетъ созадѝ гра́да і҆арі́ма ѿ сѣ́вера, се́й є҆́сть хасалѡ́нъ: и҆ сни́детъ ко гра́дꙋ со́лнечнꙋ и҆ пре́йдетъ къ ю҆́гꙋ:
And the border terminates behind Accaron northward, and the borders will terminate at Socchoth, and the borders will go on to the south, and will terminate at Lebna, and the issue of the borders will be at the sea; and their borders [shall be] toward the sea, the great sea shall be the boundary.
καὶ διεκβάλλει τὸ ὅριον κατὰ νώτου ᾿Ακκαρὼν ἐπὶ βορρᾶν, καὶ διεκβαλεῖ τὰ ὅρια εἰς Σοκχὼθ καὶ παρελεύσεται ὅρια ἐπὶ λίβα καὶ διεκβαλεῖ ἐπὶ Λεβνά, καὶ ἔσται ἡ διέξοδος τῶν ὁρίων ἐπὶ θάλασσαν. καὶ τὰ ὅρια αὐτῶν ἀπὸ θαλάσσης· ἡ θάλασσα ἡ μεγάλη ὁριεῖ.
и҆ прехо́дитъ предѣ́лъ созадѝ а҆ккарѡ́на до сѣ́вера, и҆ прехо́дѧтъ предѣ́лы въ сакхарѡ́нъ, и҆ пре́йдꙋтъ го́рꙋ землѝ валаа́ни, и҆ прехо́дѧтъ ко і҆авни́лꙋ, и҆ бꙋ́детъ и҆схо́дъ предѣ́лѡвъ къ мо́рю, и҆ предѣ́лы и҆́хъ ѿ мо́рѧ, мо́ре вели́кое ѡ҆предѣли́тъ.
These [are] the borders of the children of Juda round about according to their families.
ταῦτα τὰ ὅρια υἱῶν ᾿Ιούδα κύκλῳ κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν.
Сі́и предѣ́лы сынѡ́въ і҆ꙋ́диныхъ ѡ҆́крестъ по со́нмѡмъ и҆́хъ.
And to Chaleb the son of Jephone he gave a portion in the midst of the children of Juda by the command of God; and Joshua gave him the city of Arboc the metropolis of Enac; this is Chebron.
καὶ τῷ Χάλεβ υἱῷ ᾿Ιεφονὴ ἔδωκε μερίδα ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν ᾿Ιούδα διὰ προστάγματος τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ᾿Ιησοῦς τὴν πόλιν ᾿Αρβὸκ μητρόπολιν ᾿Ενὰκ (αὕτη ἐστὶ Χεβρών).
И҆ дадѐ (і҆исꙋ́съ) хале́вꙋ сы́нꙋ і҆ефонні́инꙋ ча́сть посредѣ̀ сынѡ́въ і҆ꙋ́диныхъ повелѣ́нїемъ бж҃їимъ, и҆ дадѐ є҆мꙋ̀ і҆исꙋ́съ гра́дъ а҆рво́къ, ѻ҆тца̀ є҆на́кова: се́й є҆́сть хеврѡ́нъ.
13–14First, therefore, let us investigate why Caleb received the capital city, the capital of Anak, the one first called a capital among all the rest in the land of promise. Anak means "vain humility" or "vain reply." Therefore, Caleb received the capital of "vain humility." It is certain that there are two humilities. One is laudable, about which the Savior said, "Learn from me because I am meek and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls." And about this humility it is said, "Everyone who humbles himself will be exalted," and elsewhere, "Therefore, be humbled under the almighty hand of God." But there is also another humility, guilty of sins, just as that which Scripture speaks of concerning illicit sexual union: "He humbled her." This is written concerning Ammon, that he "humbled" Tamar his sister. For it is vain humility that sinks down on account of sin. Therefore, Caleb seized or destroyed the capital city of vain humility and destroyed the three sons of Anak, who were sons of vain humility, and, after he had destroyed them, he occupied the city and did the things that are written later.

And Chaleb the son of Jephone destroyed thence the three sons of Enac, Susi, and Tholami, and Achima.
καὶ ἐξωλόθρευσεν ἐκεῖθεν Χάλεβ υἱὸς ᾿Ιεφονὴ τοὺς τρεῖς υἱοὺς ᾿Ενάκ, τὸν Σουσὶ καὶ Θολαμὶ καὶ τὸν ᾿Αχιμᾶ.
И҆ потребѝ ѿтꙋ́дꙋ хале́въ сы́нъ і҆ефонні́инъ трѝ сы́ны є҆на́кѡвы, сꙋсі́а и҆ ѳолмаі̀ и҆ а҆хїма̀:
But who are those sons of vain humility whom Caleb drove out? First Sheshai, which is interpreted "outside me," that is, "outside the holy," because the son of vain humility is outside the holy, and indeed outside God. And another is Ahiman, which means "my brother outside counsel" just as if we said, "brother without counsel." For it is certain all brothers who are born from vain humility are outside counsel. Third is Talmai, which means "precipice" or "suspension." This indicates that there is nothing stable in him, but all things are unsettled and rushing headlong into great danger.

And Chaleb went up thence to the inhabitants of Dabir; and the name of Dabir before was the City of letters.
καὶ ἀνέβη ἐκεῖθεν Χάλεβ ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Δαβίρ· τὸ δὲ ὄνομα Δαβὶρ ἦν τὸ πρότερον Πόλις γραμμάτων.
и҆ взы́де ѿтꙋ́дꙋ хале́въ на живꙋ́щихъ въ даві́рѣ: и҆́мѧ же пре́жде бѧ́ше даві́рꙋ гра́дъ пи́сменъ.
And Chaleb said, Whosoever shall take and destroy the City of letters, and master it, to him will I give my daughter Ascha to wife.
καὶ εἶπε Χάλεβ· ὃς ἐὰν λάβῃ καὶ ἐκκόψῃ τὴν Πόλιν τῶν γραμμάτων καὶ κυριεύσῃ αὐτῆς, δώσω αὐτῷ τὴν ᾿Ασχὰν θυγατέρα μου εἰς γυναῖκα·
И҆ речѐ хале́въ: и҆́же а҆́ще во́зметъ кто̀ гра́дъ пи́сменъ и҆ воз̾ѡблада́етъ и҆́мъ, да́мъ є҆мꙋ̀ а҆сха́нь дще́рь мою̀ въ женꙋ̀.
16–17But now Caleb went up against that City of Letters and said, “I shall give Achsah my daughter for a wife to whoever demolishes the City of Letters and gains possession of it. And Othniel the son of Kenaz seized it.” Moreover, Othniel, who received the City of Letters, is interpreted “the reply of God.” But “the reply of God” can be said “he to whom God replies,” that is, he to whom God reveals secrets and discloses hidden things. That one, therefore, is the younger brother of Caleb, the one who is able to take the City of Letters of the old covenant, and to demolish the “killing letter.”

And Gothoniel the son of Chenez the brother of Chaleb took it; and he gave him Ascha his daughter to wife.
καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτὴν Γοθονιὴλ υἱὸς Κενὲζ ἀδελφὸς Χάλεβ ὁ νεώτερος καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ τὴν ᾿Ασχὰν θυγατέρα αὐτοῦ γυναῖκα.
И҆ взѧ̀ є҆го̀ гоѳонїи́лъ сы́нъ кене́за, бра́та хале́вова, ю҆нѣ́йшїй: и҆ дадѐ є҆мꙋ̀ а҆сха́нь дще́рь свою̀ въ женꙋ̀.
And it came to pass as she went out that she counseled him, saying, I will ask of my father a field; and she cried from off her ass; and Chaleb said to her, What is it?
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐκπορεύεσθαι αὐτὴν καὶ συνεβουλεύσατο αὐτῷ λέγουσα· αἰτήσομαι τὸν πατέρα μου ἀγρόν· καὶ ἐβόησεν ἐκ τοῦ ὄνου. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Χάλεβ· τί ἐστί σοι;
И҆ бы́сть внегда̀ ѿходи́ти є҆́й, и҆ совѣща̀ съ ни́мъ, глаго́лющи: попрошꙋ̀ ᲂу҆ ѻ҆тца̀ моегѡ̀ села̀. И҆ воззва̀ со ѻ҆слѧ́ти. И҆ речѐ є҆́й хале́въ: что́ ти є҆́сть;
And she said to him, Give me a blessing, for thou hast set me in the land of Nageb; give me Golathmain: and he gave her Chaleb Golathmain the upper, and Golathmain the lower.
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· δός μοι εὐλογίαν, ὅτι εἰς γῆν Ναγὲβ δέδωκάς με· δός μοι τὴν Γολαθμαίν. καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῇ Χάλεβ τὴν Γολαθμαὶν τὴν ἄνω καὶ τὴν Γολαθμαὶν τὴν κάτω.
И҆ речѐ є҆мꙋ̀: да́ждь мѝ благослове́нїе, ꙗ҆́кѡ въ зе́млю полꙋ́деннꙋю ѿда́лъ є҆сѝ мѧ̀: да́ждь мѝ гѡла́ѳъ-маі́мъ. И҆ дадѐ є҆́й хале́въ гѡла́ѳъ-маі́мъ вы́шнїй и҆ гѡла́ѳъ ни́жнїй.
This [is] the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Juda.
αὕτη ἡ κληρονομία φυλῆς υἱῶν ᾿Ιούδα.

And their cities were cities belonging to the tribe of the children of Juda on the borders of Edom by the wilderness, and Baeseleel, and Ara, and Asor,
᾿Εγενήθησαν δὲ πόλεις αὐτῶν· πόλις πρώτη φυλῆς υἱῶν ᾿Ιούδα ἐφ’ ὁρίων ᾿Εδὼμ ἐπὶ τῆς ἐρήμου,
бы́ша же гра́ди и҆́хъ гра́ди пле́мене сынѡ́въ і҆ꙋ́диныхъ къ предѣ́лѡмъ є҆дѡ̑млимъ въ пꙋсты́ни, кавсеи́лъ и҆ є҆драі́мъ и҆ і҆агꙋ́ръ,
and Icam, and Regma, and Aruel,
καὶ Βαισελεὴλ καὶ ᾿Αρὰ καὶ ᾿Ασὼρ καὶ ᾿Ικὰμ καὶ Ῥεγμὰ καὶ ᾿Αρουὴλ
и҆ кїна̀ и҆ дїмѡна̀ и҆ а҆дада̀,
and Cades, and Asorionain, and Maenam,
καὶ Κάδης καὶ ᾿Ασοριωναὶν καὶ Μαινὰμ
и҆ кеде́съ и҆ а҆сѡ́ръ и҆ і҆ѳнаѯі́фъ,
and the cities of Aseron, this [is] Asor,
καὶ αἱ πόλεις ᾿Ασερὼν (αὕτη ᾿Ασὼρ)
и҆ а҆сѡ́ръ но́вый и҆ гра́дъ а҆серѡ́мъ (се́й є҆́сть а҆сѡ́ръ):
and Cholaseola, and Beersabee; and their villages, and their hamlets,
καὶ Χολασεωλὰ καὶ Βηρσαβεὲ καὶ αἱ κῶμαι αὐτῶν καὶ αἱ ἐπαύλεις αὐτῶν,
и҆ а҆сарсꙋла̀ и҆ вирсавеѐ (꙳и҆ се́ла и҆́хъ и҆ предгра̑дїѧ и҆́хъ):
and Elboudad, and Baethel, and Herma,
καὶ ᾿Ελβωϋδὰδ καὶ Βαιθὴλ καὶ ῾Ερμᾶ
и҆ є҆лѳѡла́дъ и҆ хесі́лъ и҆ є҆рма̀,
and Sekelac, and Macharim, and Sethennac,
καὶ Σεκελὰκ καὶ Μαχαρὶμ καὶ Σεθεννὰκ
и҆ сїкеле́гъ и҆ ведевина̀ и҆ сансанна̀,
and Labos, and Sale, and Eromoth; twenty-nine cities, and their villages.
καὶ Λαβὼς καὶ Σαλὴ καὶ ᾿Ερωμώθ, πόλεις εἰκοσιεννέα, καὶ αἱ κῶμαι αὐτῶν.
и҆ лавѡ́ѳъ и҆ селеі́мъ, и҆ а҆і́нъ и҆ реммѡ́нъ: всѣ́хъ градѡ́въ два́десѧть и҆ де́вѧть, и҆ се́ла и҆́хъ.
In the plain country Astaol, and Raa, and Assa,
ἐν τῇ πεδινῇ· ᾿Ασταὼλ καὶ Ῥάα καὶ ῎Ασσα
Въ напо́льнѣй, є҆сѳаѡ́лъ и҆ сараа̀, и҆ а҆сна̀ (꙳и҆ раме́нъ),
and Ramen, and Tano, and Iluthoth, and Maeani,
καὶ Ῥάμεν καὶ Τανὼ καὶ ᾿Ιλουθὼθ καὶ Μαιανὶ
и҆ занѡ̀ и҆ и҆нгоні́мъ, и҆ ѳаффꙋа̀ и҆ и҆наі́мъ,
and Jermuth, and Odollam, and Membra, and Saocho, and Azecah.
καὶ ῾Ιερμοὺθ καὶ ᾿Οδολλὰμ καὶ Μεμβρὰ καὶ Σαωχὼ καὶ ᾿Αζηκὰ
и҆ і҆ерїмꙋ́ѳъ и҆ ѻ҆долла́мъ, (꙳и҆ немра̀) и҆ сѡхѡ̀ и҆ а҆зика̀,
And Sacarim and Gadera, and its villages; fourteen cities, and their villages;
καὶ Σακαρὶμ καὶ Γάδηρα καὶ αἱ ἐπαύλεις αὐτῆς, πόλεις δεκατέσσαρες καὶ αἱ κῶμαι αὐτῶν·

And the Jebusite dwelt in Jerusalem, and the children of Juda could not destroy them; and the Jebusites dwelt in Jerusalem to this day.
καὶ ὁ ᾿Ιεβουσαῖος κατῴκει ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ, καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνάσθησαν οἱ υἱοὶ ᾿Ιούδα ἀπολέσαι αὐτούς· καὶ κατῴκησαν οἱ ᾿Ιεβουσαῖοι ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.
И҆ і҆евꙋсе́й ѡ҆бита́ше во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ, и҆ не возмого́ша сы́нове і҆ꙋ̑дины погꙋби́ти и҆̀хъ: и҆ ѡ҆бита́ша і҆евꙋсе́є съ сынмѝ і҆ꙋ́диными во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ да́же до днѐ ѻ҆́нагѡ.
But let us understand these verses spiritually, claiming the parable of the Gospel, which says concerning the weeds, “Let them grow up together, lest perhaps when you wish to pluck up the weeds, you also pluck up the wheat with them.” Therefore, as the weeds are permitted in the Gospel to grow up together with the wheat, in the same manner even here in Jerusalem—that is, in the church—there are certain Jebusites who lead an ignoble and degenerate life, and who are perverse not only in their faith but in their actions and in every manner of living. For while the church is on earth, it is not possible to cleanse it to such purity that neither an ungodly person nor any sinner seems to reside in it, where everyone is holy and blessed and no blot of sin is found in them. But just as it is said concerning the weeds, “lest perhaps plucking up the weeds, at the same time you may also pluck up the wheat with them,” so it can also be said of those in whom there are either doubtful or secret sins. For we are not saying that those who are clearly and plainly sinful should not be expelled from the church.
Homilies on Joshua 21.1
Concerning Jerusalem, we have frequently said that it means “a vision of peace.” If, therefore, Jerusalem has been built in our heart—that is, if the vision of peace has been established in our heart and we always contemplate and retain in our heart Christ, who is “our peace”—if indeed we are so fixed and firm in this vision of peace that absolutely no evil thought or consideration of some sin ever rises up into our heart, if this could be so done, we would be able to say that we are in Jerusalem and no one else dwells with us except those who are holy. But now, even though we make great progress and improve ourselves with the utmost zeal, nevertheless I do not think anyone turns out to be so pure of heart that he is never defiled by the contamination of a contrary thought. Therefore, it is still certain that Jebusites dwell with the sons of Judah in Jerusalem. Yet we do not say these things so that we may neglect to cast them out as far as it may be done. On the contrary, we must be amply concerned and must attempt daily to cast them from Jerusalem; but, just as it is written, we cannot cast all out at the same time.

And the borders of the tribe of Juda according to their families were from the borders of Idumea from the wilderness of Sin, as far as Cades southward.
