Jeremiah 44
Commentary from 4 fathers
And Sedekias the son of Josias reigned instead of Joakim, whom Nabuchodonosor appointed to reign over Juda.
(Μασ.
And he and his servants and the people of the land hearkened not to the words of the Lord, which he spoke by Jeremias.
And king Sedekias sent Joachal son of Selemias and Sophonias the priest son of Maasaeas to Jeremias, saying, Pray now for us to the Lord.
Now Jeremias came and went through the midst of the city: for they [had] not put him into the house of the prison.
And the host of Pharao was come forth out of Egypt; and the Chaldeans heard the report of them, and they went up from Jerusalem.
And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, saying,
Thus said the Lord; Thus shalt thou say to the king of Juda who sent to thee, to seek me; Behold, the army of Pharao which is come forth to help you: they shall return to the land of Egypt:
For thus saith the Lord; Suppose not in your hearts, saying, The Chaldeans will certainly depart from us: for they shall not depart.
є҆да̀ забы́сте ѕлѡ́бы ѻ҆тє́цъ ва́шихъ и҆ ѕлѡ́бы царе́й і҆ꙋ́диныхъ, и҆ ѕлѡ́бы кнѧзе́й ва́шихъ и҆ ѕлѡ́бы ва́шѧ, и҆ ѕлѡ́бы же́нъ ва́шихъ, ꙗ҆̀же сотвори́ша въ землѝ і҆ꙋ́динѣ и҆ внѣ̀ і҆ерⷭ҇ли́ма;
And though ye should smite the whole host of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there should be left a few wounded [men], these should rise up each in his place, and burn this city with fire.
And it came to pass, when the host of the Chaldeans had gone up from Jerusalem for fear of the host of Pharao,
that Jeremias went forth from Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to buy thence [a property] in the midst of the people.
And he was in the gate of Benjamin, and [there was] there a man with whom he lodged, Saruia the son of Selemias, the son of Ananias; and he caught Jeremias, saying, Thou art fleeing to the Chaldeans.
καὶ ἐγένετο αὐτὸς ἐν πύλῃ Βενιαμίν, καὶ ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπος, παρ’ ᾧ κατέλυε, Σαρουΐα υἱὸς Σελεμίου, υἱοῦ ᾿Ανανίου, καὶ συνέλαβε τὸν ῾Ιερεμίαν λέγων· πρὸς τοὺς Χαλδαίους σὺ φεύγεις;
And he said, [It is] false; I do not flee to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him; and Saruia caught Jeremias, and brought him to the princes.
When God inflicts the punishment, no one can save those in harm’s way. Wherever they go, his wrath will follow.
Fragments on Jeremiah in Catena
And the princes were very angry with Jeremias, and smote him, and sent him into the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made this a prison.
So Jeremias came into the dungeon, and into the cells, and he remained there many days.
16–18What was the reason for this? It was because the Jews were so arrogant and obstinate. They immediately forgot what God had done for them; they ascribed his kindness to demons and reckoned that his blessings had come from them. Even when the sea was divided for them, as they went forth from Egypt, and while other wonderful things were happening to them, they forgot the God who was performing these miracles and attributed them to others who were not gods. For they said to Aaron, “Make for us gods who will be our leaders.” And they said to Jeremiah, “We will not listen to what you say in the name of the Lord. Rather, we will continue doing what we had proposed: we will burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, as we and our ancestors, our kings and princes have done. Then we had enough food to eat and we were well off; we suffered no misfortune. But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we are in need of everything and are being destroyed by the sword and by hunger.” The inspired prophets, then, foretold what would happen to the Jews so that they would ascribe none of the events to idols but would believe that both punishments and blessings always come from God: the punishment came for their sins and the blessings because of God’s love and kindness.
Discourses Against Judaizing Christians 5:4.4
Then Sedekias sent, and called him; and the king asked him secretly, saying, Is there a word from the Lord? and he said, There is: thou shalt be delivered into the hands of the king of Babylon.
And Jeremias said to the king, Wherein have I wronged thee, or thy servants, or this people, that thou puttest me in prison?
καὶ εἶπεν ῾Ιερεμίας τῷ βασιλεῖ· τί ἠδίκησά σε καὶ τοὺς παῖδάς σου καὶ τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον, ὅτι σὺ δίδως με εἰς οἰκίαν φυλακῆς;
And where are your prophets who prophesied to you saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against this land?
καὶ ποῦ εἰσιν οἱ προφῆται ὑμῶν οἱ προφητεύσαντες ὑμῖν λέγοντες· ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ταύτην;
И҆ є҆гда̀ кади́хомъ мы̀ цари́цѣ небе́снѣй и҆ возлива́хомъ є҆́й возлїѧ̑нїѧ, є҆да̀ без̾ мꙋже́й на́шихъ твори́хомъ є҆́й ѡ҆прѣсно́ки и҆ возлива́хомъ є҆́й возлїѧ̑нїѧ;
Now therefore, my lord the king, let my supplication come before thy face: and why dost thou send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe? and let me not on any account die there.
καὶ νῦν, κύριε βασιλεῦ, πεσέτω τὸ ἔλεός μου κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου, καὶ τί ἀποστρέφεις με εἰς οἰκίαν ᾿Ιωνάθαν τοῦ γραμματέως καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνω ἐκεῖ;
Then the king commanded, and they cast him into the prison, and gave him a loaf a day out of the place where they bake, until the bread failed out of the city. So Jeremias continued in the court of the prison.
не кажде́нїе ли, є҆́же кади́сте во градѣ́хъ і҆ꙋ́диныхъ и҆ внѣꙋ́дꙋ і҆ерⷭ҇ли́ма вы̀ и҆ ѻ҆тцы̀ ва́ши, и҆ ца́рїе ва́ши и҆ кнѧ̑зи ва́ши и҆ лю́дїе землѝ, помѧнꙋ̀ гдⷭ҇ь, и҆ взы́де на срⷣце є҆гѡ̀;
21–22He reminds them (as they have it fresh in their memory) of all the evils perpetuated by their ancestors and by their kings and mighty people, and he reminds them of the misfortunes of all kinds brought to bear against them. And he threatens them, calling himself the Lord of hosts and the God of Israel, so that they might hear the greatness of his authority and learn of his care for their ancestors and so that they might show reverence and fear.
On Jeremiah 8:44
21–22But none of these things struck fear in these wretched, no, three-times wretched individuals, but they all clamored—men and women alike, but especially the Babylonians—“We cannot endure your words.” What is even worse than this is that, although they thought that these words were divine, they openly contradicted them.
On Jeremiah 8:44
21–22God spoke to sinners through his prophet, because “the Lord remembered these things and,” he says, “he ascended over his heart, and the Lord was not able to bear more because of the evil of your endeavors and the abominations that you have done; and your land is made into a desolation, a wonder and a curse.” Through these things, therefore, it has already happened that the greater part of the Roman world is become a desolation, a wonder and a curse.
The Governance of God 6:8
and the Chaldeans themselves shall turn again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.
разгнѣ́вати мѧ̀ въ дѣ́лѣхъ рꙋ́къ ва́шихъ, кади́ти богѡ́мъ и҆нѣ̑мъ въ землѝ є҆гѵ́петстѣй, въ ню́же прїидо́сте жи́ти та́мѡ, да и҆зсѣ́чени бꙋ́дете и҆ въ проклѧ́тїе да бꙋ́дете и҆ на ᲂу҆кори́знꙋ во всѣ́хъ ꙗ҆зы́цѣхъ землѝ;
