Genesis 44
Commentary from 3 fathers
AND Joseph charged the steward of his house, saying, Fill the men's sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put the money of each in the mouth of his sack.
The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their asses.
And when they had gone out of the city, [and] were not far off, then Joseph said to his steward, Arise, and pursue after the men; and thou shalt overtake them, and say to them, Why have ye returned evil for good?
ἐξελθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν τὴν πόλιν, οὐκ ἀπέσχον μακράν, καὶ ᾿Ιωσὴφ εἶπε τῷ ἐπὶ τῆς οἰκίας αὐτοῦ· ἀναστὰς ἐπιδίωξον ὀπίσω τῶν ἀνθρώπων καὶ καταλήψῃ αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτοῖς· τί ὅτι ἀνταπεδώκατε πονηρὰ ἀντὶ καλῶν; ἱνατί ἐκλέψατέ μου τὸ κόνδυ τὸ ἀργυροῦν;
И҆зше́дше же ѻ҆нѝ и҆з̾ гра́да, не ѿидо́ша дале́че: и҆ речѐ і҆ѡ́сифъ домострои́телю своемꙋ̀: воста́въ гонѝ в̾слѣ́дъ мꙋже́й и҆ пости́гни и҆̀хъ, и҆ рцы̀ и҆̀мъ: что̀ ꙗ҆́кѡ возда́сте (꙳мѝ) ѕла̑ѧ за блага̑ѧ;
Why have ye stolen my silver cup? is it not this out of which my lord drinks? and he divines augury with it; ye have accomplished evil in that which ye have done.
And he found them, and spoke to them according to these words.
And they said to him, Why does our lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word.
If we brought back to thee out of the land of Chanaan the money which we found in our sacks, how should we steal silver or gold out of the house of thy lord?
εἰ τὸ μὲν ἀργύριον, ὁ εὕρομεν ἐν τοῖς μαρσίπποις ἡμῶν, ἀπεστρέψαμεν πρὸς σὲ ἐκ γῆς Χαναάν, πῶς ἂν κλέψαιμεν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ κυρίου σου ἀργύριον ἢ χρυσίον;
а҆́ще сребро̀, є҆́же ѡ҆брѣто́хомъ во вре́тищахъ на́шихъ, возврати́хомъ къ тебѣ̀ ѿ землѝ ханаа́ни, ка́кѡ бы́хомъ ᲂу҆кра́ли и҆з̾ до́мꙋ господи́на твоегѡ̀ сребро̀ и҆лѝ зла́то;
With whomsoever of thy servants thou shalt find the cup, let him die; and, moreover, we will be servants to our lord.
And he said, Now then it shall be as ye say; with whomsoever the cup shall be found, he shall be my servant, and ye shall be clear.
And they hasted, and took down every man his sack on the ground, and they opened every man his sack.
And he searched, beginning from the eldest, until he came to the youngest; and he found the cup in Benjamin's sack.
The brothers did not know what to say; they found it impossible not to put the blame on Benjamin because the cup had come out from his sack, but the money that had twice come out from their own sacks did not permit them to put the blame on him. Then the brothers, confounded by the things that had befallen them, rent their garments and went back weeping to that house from which they had just departed rejoicing.
Commentary on Genesis 38:3
The sacks of the brothers are first examined according to the order of age of each brother. God’s Scripture is teaching you a moral lesson. Previously they sat at the banquet in Joseph’s presence in order of age from the firstborn. You see that the place of honor is to be given to the eldest. On the other hand, the sacks of each are searched in order of age so that you may know that Paul has been chosen by the judgment of heaven. The rest were examined, but this man was given the preference. The silver cup was not found in the sack of anyone else, only in his sack. What is the meaning of its being put in his humble sack? Joseph … sent the cup so that he might by a holy trick recall the brother whom he loved; yet the light of God’s mysterious plans is clearly reflected.
On Joseph the Patriarch
Christ finds this money in us which he has himself given us. We possess the money of nature; we also possess the money of grace. Nature is the work of the Creator, grace the gift of the Redeemer. Even though we are unable to see Christ’s gifts, nevertheless he is giving them. He is working in a hidden way and is giving them to all people, but there are few who are able to keep them and not lose them. Yet he does not give all things to all people. Wheat is given to many, but the cup to one, who is presented with the prophetic and priestly function. For it is not everyone but only the prophet who says, “The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the Lord.” Therefore the word of heavenly teaching already shone in Paul’s body, since he was instructed in the law. But because he was still not subject to the justice of God, the cup was within the sack, the teaching within the law, the lamp within the bushel. Nevertheless Ananias was sent to give a blessing and to lay on his hand and open the sack. When the sack was opened, the money shone forth, and when the scales fell, in a way like fastenings on the sack, Paul saw straightway. His fetter was unbelief; the loosening of it became faith. And for that reason, when the veil that is set over the heart of the Jews was set aside—like the opening of the sack—he turned to the Lord. Free of the bond, he obtained the grace of liberty and said, “But we all, beholding the glory of God with faces unveiled, are transformed into the same image.”
On Joseph the Patriarch
And they rent their garments, and laid each man his sack on his ass, and returned to the city.
And Judas and his brethren came in to Joseph, while he was yet there, and fell on the ground before him.
And Joseph said to them, What is this thing that ye have done? know ye not that a man such as I can surely divine?
εἶπε δὲ αὐτοῖς ᾿Ιωσήφ· τί τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο ἐποιήσατε; οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι οἰωνισμῷ οἰωνιεῖται ὁ ἄνθρωπος, οἷος ἐγώ;
Рече́ же и҆̀мъ і҆ѡ́сифъ: что̀ дѣ́ло сїѐ сотвори́сте; не вѣ́дасте ли, ꙗ҆́кѡ нѣ́сть волхвова́тель человѣ́къ, ꙗ҆́коже а҆́зъ;
And Judas said, What shall we answer to our lord, or what shall we say, or wherein should we be justified? whereas God has discovered the unrighteousness of thy servants; behold, we are slaves to our lord, both we and he with whom the cup has been found.
Then Judah said, “Before God the sins of your servants have been discovered”—not this one [of the cup] but the one for which we have been requited with these things. “Therefore not only he in whose sack the cup was found but we also will become slaves to our master.” And Joseph said, “Far be it from” the just Egyptian “to do this!” These men, because of their great virtue, do not even eat bread with Hebrews lest they become unclean by them. How then can we do what is foreign to our conduct? The justice that hinders us from sinning against one who has not sinned against us compels us to be avenged on that one who has caused us offence. “The one in whose hand the cup was found shall remain and be a slave.” This will be better for him than freedom, for this later servitude, which will free him from theft, will be better for him than that first freedom that enslaved him to theft.
Commentary on Genesis 38:4
And Joseph said, Far be it from me to do this thing; the man with whom the cup has been found, he shall be my servant; but do ye go up with safety to your father.
And Judas drew near him, and said, I pray, Sir, let thy servant speak a word before thee, and be not angry with thy servant, for thou art next to Pharao.
Sir, thou askedst thy servants, saying, Have ye a father or a brother?
κύριε, σὺ ἠρώτησας τοὺς παῖδάς σου, λέγων· εἰ ἔχετε πατέρα ἢ ἀδελφόν;
господи́не, ты̀ вопроша́лъ є҆сѝ рабѡ́въ твои́хъ, глаго́лѧ: а҆́ще и҆́мате ѻ҆тца̀, и҆лѝ бра́та;
And we said to [my] lord, We have a father, an old man, and he has a son of his old age, a young one, and his brother is dead, and he alone has been left behind to his mother, and his father loves him.
And thou saidst to thy servants, Bring him down to me, and I will take care of him.
And we said to [my] lord, The child will not be able to leave his father; but if he should leave his father, he will die.
But thou saidst to thy servants, Except your younger brother come down with you, ye shall not see my face again.
And it came to pass, when we went up to thy servant our father, we reported to him the words of our lord.
And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.
And we said, We shall not be able to go down; but if our younger brother go down with us, we will go down; for we shall not be able to see the man's face, our younger brother not being with us.
And thy servant our father said to us, Ye know that my wife bore me two [sons];
and one is departed from me; and ye said that he was devoured of wild beasts, and I have not seen him until now.
If then ye take this one also from my presence, and an affliction happen to him by the way, then shall ye bring down my old age with sorrow to the grave.
Now then, if I should go in to thy servant, and our father, and the boy should not be with us, (and his life depends on this [lad's] life)
-- it shall even come to pass, when he sees the boy is not with us, [that] he will die, and thy servants will bring down the old age of thy servant, and our father, with sorrow to the grave.
For thy servant has received the boy [in charge] from his father, saying, If I bring him not to thee, and place him before thee, I shall be guilty towards my father for ever.
Now then I will remain a servant with thee instead of the lad, a domestic of my lord; but let the lad go up with his brethren.
For how shall I go up to my father, the lad not being with us? lest I behold the evils which will befall my father.
And put my silver cup into the sack of the youngest, and the price of his corn. And it was done according to the word of Joseph, as he said.
