2 Kings (4 Kings) 8
Commentary from 1 father
And the woman arose, and did according to the word of Elisaie, both she and her house; and they sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.
And it came to pass after the expiration of the seven years, that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines to the city; and came to cry to the king for her house and for her lands.
And the king spoke to Giezi the servant of Elisaie the man of God, saying, Tell me, I pray thee, all the great things which Elisaie has done.
And it came to pass, as he was telling the king how he had restored to life the dead son, behold, the woman whose son Elisaie restored to life [came] crying to the king for her house and for her lands. And Giezi said, My lord, O king, this [is] the woman, and this [is] her son, whom Elisaie restored to life.
And the king asked the woman, and she told him: and the king appointed her a eunuch, saying, Restore all that was hers, and all the fruits of the field from the day that she left the land until now.
And Elisaie came to Damascus; and the king of Syria the son of Ader was ill, and they brought him word, saying, The man of God is come hither.
“Elisha went to Damascus while King Ben-hadad was ill.” His illness had derived from his unhappiness. For he had been deeply afflicted by the fact that, in the war of Samaria, his armies had been defeated and that, at the same time, his people had been chased from the city when he had hoped that his victory would occur immediately. His entire army had fled and sunk into shame and dishonor, and he was troubled in his mind because of this. In addition, the anguish of his thoughts was due to something that was not responsible for his fall: he had been deceived in believing that a countless and powerful army would march against him, whereas it was later shown that there was no army at all to oppress him.
On the Second Book of Kings 8:7
And the king said to Azael, Take in thine hand a present, and go to meet the man of God, and enquire of the Lord by him, saying, Shall I recover of this my disease?
καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς ᾿Αζαήλ· λάβε ἐν τῇ χειρί σου μαναὰ καὶ δεῦρο εἰς ἀπαντὴν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ ἐπιζήτησον τὸν Κύριον παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ λέγων· εἰ ζήσομαι ἐκ τῆς ἀρρωστίας μου ταύτης;
И҆ речѐ ца́рь ко а҆заи́лꙋ: прїимѝ въ рꙋ́кꙋ свою̀ да́ръ, и҆ и҆дѝ во срѣ́тенїе человѣ́кꙋ бж҃їю, и҆ вопросѝ гдⷭ҇а и҆̀мъ, глаго́лѧ: а҆́ще ли жи́въ бꙋ́дꙋ ѿ болѣ̑зни сеѧ̀;
8–9Therefore the king, when he heard of the coming of Elisha, sent Hazael, one of his noble men, to meet him. He ordered him to persuade the prophet to take care of his healing, and since he thought that this request must be accompanied with gifts and offerings, according to secular customs, he sent him, through his ambassador, all sorts of goods from Damascus and forty camels. But certainly the prophets refused, just as Elisha had refused and had not accepted the offerings of Naaman, the Aramean.
On the Second Book of Kings 8:7
And Azael went to meet him, and he took a present in his hand, and all the good things of Damascus, forty camels’ load, and came and stood before him, and said to Elisaie, Thy son the son of Ader, the king of Syria, has sent me to thee to enquire, saying, Shall I recover of this my disease?
καὶ ἐπορεύθη ᾿Αζαὴλ εἰς ἀπαντὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔλαβε μαναὰ ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντα τὰ ἀγαθὰ Δαμασκοῦ, ἄρσιν τεσσαράκοντα καμήλων, καὶ ἦλθε καὶ ἔστη ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπε πρὸς ῾Ελισαιέ· υἱός σου υἱὸς ῎Αδερ βασιλεὺς Συρίας ἀπέστειλέ με πρός σε ἐπερωτῆσαι λέγων· εἰ ζήσομαι ἐκ τῆς ἀρρωστίας μου ταύτης;
И҆ и҆́де а҆заи́лъ на срѣ́тенїе є҆мꙋ̀, и҆ взѧ̀ да́ръ въ рꙋ́кꙋ свою̀, и҆ всѧ̑ блага̑ѧ дама́скова, бре́мѧ четы́редесѧть вельблю́дѡвъ, и҆ прїи́де, и҆ ста̀ пред̾ ни́мъ, и҆ речѐ ко є҆лїссе́ю: сы́нъ тво́й, сы́нъ а҆де́ровъ, ца́рь сѵ́рскїй, посла́ мѧ къ тебѣ̀ вопроси́ти, глаго́лѧ: бꙋ́дꙋ ли жи́въ ѿ болѣ́зни моеѧ̀ сеѧ̀;
And Elisaie said, Go, say, Thou shalt certainly live; yet the Lord has shewed me that thou shalt surely die.
10–15“Go, say to him, ‘You shall certainly recover;’ but the Lord has shown me that he shall certainly die.” These were the words of Elisha to the king, who asked him, “Will I live after this illness?” But it seems that they do not agree with the truth of the events, and not even with each other. However, after the words reported above in the story of the prophet Micah, it is evident that they do not cancel each other out or contradict each other. In fact, both prophets answer in the same manner, and the words of their reply pursue the same aim in the fact that they announce to their interlocutor good and death at the same time. But in the reply of Micah a particular aspect must be considered, that is, the fact that Ahab could not escape from death, because he so ardently and savagely wanted to go to the war, which was the real cause of his fall.But the case of Ben-hadad is quite different: it would have been easy for him to get rid of his illness, because it was not serious or fatal. He would have recovered from his illness, as Elisha had said to him and as Ben-Hadad had asked him by saying, “Will I live after my illness?” However, he died in a natural course but by a hostile means: he was misled by Hazael, his ambassador, the one who spread the bed cover on his master, killed him and reigned in his place, as Elisha had predicted.
On the Second Book of Kings 8:10
And he stood before him, and fixed [his countenance] till he was ashamed: and the man of God wept.
And Azael said, Why does my lord weep? And he said, Because I know all the evil that thou wilt do to the children of Israel: thou wilt utterly destroy their strong holds with fire, and thou wilt slay their choice men with the sword, and thou wilt dash their infants [against the ground], and their women with child thou wilt rip up.
And Azael said, Who is thy servant? a dead dog, that he should do this thing? And Elisaie said, The Lord has shewn me thee ruling over Syria.
And he departed from Elisaie, and went in to his lord; and he said to him, What said Elisaie to thee? and he said, He said to me, Thou shalt surely live.
And it came to pass on the next day that he took a thick cloth, and dipped it in water, and put it on his face, and he died: and Azael reigned in his stead.
In the fifth year of Joram son of Achaab king of Israel, and while Josaphat was king of Juda, Joram the son of Josaphat king of Juda began to reign.
Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Achaab; for the daughter of Achaab was his wife: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord.
But the Lord would not destroy Juda for David his servant’s sake, as he said he would give a light to him and to his sons continually.
In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Juda, and they made a king over themselves.
And Joram went up to Sior, and all the chariots that were with him: and it came to pass after he had arisen, that he smote Edom who compassed him about, and the captains of the chariots; and the people fled to their tents.
Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Juda till this day. Then Lobna revolted at that time.
And the rest of the acts of Joram, and all that he did, behold, are not these written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Juda?
καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων ᾿Ιωρὰμ καὶ πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησεν, οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γέγραπται ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν ᾿Ιούδα;
И҆ прѡ́чаѧ слове́съ і҆ѡра́млихъ, и҆ всѧ̑ є҆ли̑ка сотворѝ, не се́ ли, сїѧ̑ пи̑сана въ кни́зѣ слове́съ дні́й царе́й і҆ꙋ́диныхъ;
So Joram slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of his father David: and Ochozias his son reigned in his stead.
In the twelfth year of Joram son of Achaab king of Israel, Ochozias son of Joram began to reign.
Twenty and two years old [was] Ochozias when he began to reign, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem: and the name of his mother [was] Gotholia, daughter of Ambri king of Israel.
And he walked in the way of the house of Achaab, and did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as did the house of Achaab.
And he went with Joram the son of Achaab to war against Azael king of the Syrians in Remmoth Galaad; and the Syrians wounded Joram.
And king Joram returned to be healed in Jezrael of the wounds with which they wounded him in Remmoth, when he fought with Azael king of Syria. And Ochozias son of Joram went down to see Joram the son of Achaab in Jezrael, because he was sick.
And Elisaie spoke to the woman, whose son he [had] restored to life, saying, Arise, and go thou and thy house, and sojourn wherever thou mayest sojourn: for the Lord has called for a famine upon the land; indeed it is come upon the land [for] seven years.
