Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name [was] Joadim of Jerusalem.
υἱὸς εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν ἦν ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτὸν καὶ εἴκοσι καὶ ἐννέα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ, καὶ ὄνομα τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ ᾿Ιωαδὶμ ἐξ ῾Ιερουσαλήμ.
сы́нъ два́десѧти пѧтѝ лѣ́тъ бѣ̀, внегда̀ ца́рствовати є҆мꙋ̀ и҆ два́десѧть пѧ́ть лѣ́тъ ца́рствова во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ. И҆́мѧ же ма́тере є҆гѡ̀ і҆ѡаді́на ѿ і҆ерⷭ҇ли́ма.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord, but not as David his father: he did according to all things that his father Joas did.
καὶ ἐποίησε τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς Κυρίου, πλὴν οὐχ ὡς Δαυὶδ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ· κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν ᾿Ιωὰς ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, ἐποίησε·
И҆ сотворѝ пра́вое пред̾ ѻ҆чи́ма гдⷭ҇нима, ѻ҆ба́че не ꙗ҆́коже даві́дъ ѻ҆те́цъ є҆гѡ̀: по всѣ̑мъ, є҆ли̑ка сотворѝ ѻ҆те́цъ є҆гѡ̀ і҆ѡа́съ, сотворѝ,
Only he removed not the high places: as yet the people sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places.
πλὴν τὰ ὑψηλὰ οὐκ ἐξῇρεν, ἔτι ὁ λαὸς ἐθυσίαζε καὶ ἐθυμίων ἐν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς.
то́кмѡ высо́кихъ не разрꙋшѝ: є҆щѐ лю́дїе жрѧ́хꙋ и҆ кадѧ́хꙋ на высо́кихъ.
And it came to pass when the kingdom was established in his hand, that he slew his servants that had slain the king his father.
καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε κατίσχυεν ἡ βασιλεία ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπάταξε τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ τοὺς πατάξαντας τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ·
И҆ бы́сть є҆гда̀ ᲂу҆тверди́сѧ ца́рство въ рꙋкꙋ̀ є҆гѡ̀, и҆ и҆збѝ рабы̑ своѧ̑ ᲂу҆би́вшыѧ ѻ҆тца̀ є҆гѡ̀:
But he slew not the sons of those that had slain him; according as it is written in the book of the laws of Moses, as the Lord gave commandment, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, and the children shall not be put to death for the fathers; but every one shall die for his own sins.
καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν παταξάντων οὐκ ἐθανάτωσε, καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν βιβλίῳ νόμων Μωυσῆ, ὡς ἐνετείλατο Κύριος λέγων· οὐκ ἀποθανοῦνται πατέρες ὑπὲρ υἱῶν, καὶ υἱοὶ οὐκ ἀποθανοῦνται ὑπὲρ πατέρων, ὅτι ἀλλ᾿ ἢ ἕκαστος ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται.
сынѡ́въ же ᲂу҆бі́йцъ тѣ́хъ не и҆збѝ, ꙗ҆́коже пи́сано въ кни́зѣ зако́на мѡѷсе́ова, ꙗ҆́коже заповѣ́да гдⷭ҇ь, гл҃ѧ: да не ᲂу҆мира́ютъ ѻ҆тцы̀ за сы́ны, и҆ сы́нове да не ᲂу҆мира́ютъ за ѻ҆тцы̑, но то́кмѡ кі́йждо за своѧ̑ грѣхѝ да ᲂу҆́мретъ.
He smote of Edom ten thousand in the valley of salt, and took the Rock in the war, and called its name Jethoel until this day.
αὐτὸς ἐπάταξε τὴν ᾿Εδὼμ ἐν Γαιμελὲ δέκα χιλιάδας καὶ συνέλαβε τὴν Πέτραν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Καθοὴλ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης.

"He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, etc." [2 Kings 14:7] It is said of Amaziah, the king of Judah: He struck down ten thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt, and took Sela in war, and called its name Joktheel; the Valley of Salt was where they made salt, either from a spring of brine, as in many places, or by cutting, drying, and burning, or by boiling salty well waters until they solidified into salt, or by any other method by which salt is usually made. In that place, Joab is also recorded to have struck down twelve thousand Edomites. It must also not be overlooked that the old edition, for the Valley of Salt, placed Gemelach, as if it were the name of a region. Petra, however, is a noble city of Arabia, in the same land of Edom, which in the Book of Numbers is called Rekem, and by the Syrians today is still called thus (Num. 31). Joktheel, which Amaziah as victor gave it as a name, is interpreted as the assembly of God, or the help of God, acting faithfully so that it would be recorded for perpetual memory, because he took it either with the assembly of the people of God or with God's help.

Then Amessias sent messengers to Joas son of Joachaz son of Ju king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.
τότε ἀπέστειλεν ᾿Αμεσσίας ἀγγέλους πρὸς ᾿Ιωὰς υἱὸν ᾿Ιωάχαζ υἱοῦ ᾿Ιοὺ βασιλέως ᾿Ισραὴλ λέγων· δεῦρο ὀφθῶμεν προσώποις.

8–9The thorn bush [mentioned here] is a tiny plant and herb and is not the blackberry bush, [whose fruits] we eat. “Since, if ever,” he says, “the thorn bush were sent to a cedar, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife,’ it would be an insult and an act of derision, since the thorn bush is much smaller than the cedar, so you, Amaziah, do not differ at all from the thorn bush, if compared with my power.” By the cedar and the wild beast Jehoash signifies himself.

And Joas the king of Israel sent to Amessias king of Juda, saying, The thistle that was in Libanus sent to the cedar that was in Libanus, saying, Give my daughter to thy son to wife: and the wild beasts of the field that were in Libanus passed by and trod down the thistle.
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ᾿Ιωὰς βασιλεὺς ᾿Ισραὴλ πρὸς ᾿Αμεσσίαν βασιλέα ᾿Ιούδα λέγων· ὁ ἄκαν ὁ ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ ἀπέστειλε πρὸς τὴν κέδρον τὴν ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ λέγων· δὸς τὴν θυγατέρα σου τῷ υἱῷ μου εἰς γυναῖκα· καὶ διῆλθον τὰ θηρία τοῦ ἀγροῦ τὰ ἐν τῷ Λιβάνῳ καὶ συνεπάτησαν τὴν ἄκανα.

Thou hast smitten and wounded Edom, and thy heart has lifted thee up: stay at home and glorify thyself; for wherefore art thou quarrelsome to thy hurt? So [both] thou wilt fall and Juda with thee.
τύπτων ἐπάταξας τὴν ᾿Ιδουμαίαν, καὶ ἐπῇρέ σε καρδία σου· ἐνδοξάσθητι καθήμενος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ σου, καὶ ἱνατί ἐρίζεις ἐν κακίᾳ σου; καὶ πεσῇ σὺ καὶ ᾿Ιούδας μετὰ σοῦ.
побива́ѧ порази́лъ є҆сѝ і҆дꙋме́ю, и҆ вознесѐ тѧ̀ се́рдце твоѐ, просла́висѧ сѣдѧ̀ въ домꙋ̀ твое́мъ, и҆ почто̀ любопри́шисѧ въ ѕло́бѣ твое́й; и҆ паде́ши ты̀, и҆ і҆ꙋ́да съ тобо́ю.
10–11The Almighty, who cannot possibly will anything unjust, is able to set in motion even the inclinations of their will in people's hearts in order to accomplish through these people whatever he wishes to achieve through their agency. What meaning can these words have that the man of God addressed to King Amaziah: "Do not allow the army of Israel to go out with you, for the Lord is not with Israel and all the children of Ephraim. And if you think to prevail over them, God will put you to flight before your enemies; for it belongs to God both to help and to put to flight"?How does the power of God help some in war by giving them confidence and turns others to flight by instilling them with fear, except for this reason, that he who has made all things as he willed in heaven and on earth, also works in the human hearts? We also read of what Joash, king of Israel, said when he dispatched a messenger to King Amaziah, who had a mind to go to war with him. Having mentioned certain things, he went on to say, "Sit at home. Why do you provoke evil that you should fall and Judah with you?" The Scripture then went on to add, "And Amaziah would not listen to him because it was the Lord's will that he should be delivered into the hands of enemies because he sought after the gods of Edom." There you see how God, wishing to punish the sin of idolatry, influenced the heart of this man with whom he was justly angry, that he would not heed salutary advice but, in his contempt for it, would engage in battle, there to perish together with his army.

Nevertheless Amessias hearkened not: so Joas king of Israel went up, and he and Amessias king of Juda looked one another in the face in Baethsamys of Juda.
καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσεν ᾿Αμεσσίας. καὶ ἀνέβη ᾿Ιωὰς βασιλεὺς ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ ὤφθησαν προσώποις αὐτὸς καὶ ᾿Αμεσσίας βασιλεὺς ᾿Ιούδα ἐν Βαιθσαμὺς τῇ τοῦ ᾿Ιούδα·
И҆ не послꙋ́ша а҆мессі́а. И҆ взы́де і҆ѡа́съ ца́рь і҆и҃левъ, и҆ ви́дѣстасѧ лице́мъ то́й и҆ а҆мессі́а ца́рь і҆ꙋ́динъ въ веѳсамѵ́сѣ і҆ꙋ́динѣ.
And Juda was overthrown before Israel, and [every] man fled to his tent.
καὶ ἔπταισεν ᾿Ιούδας ἀπὸ προσώπου ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ ἔφυγεν ἀνὴρ εἰς τὸ σκήνωμα αὐτοῦ·
И҆ падѐ і҆ꙋ́да пред̾ лице́мъ і҆и҃левымъ, и҆ побѣжѐ кі́йждо въ до́мы своѧ̑.
And Joas king of Israel took Amessias the son of Joas the son of Ochozias, in Baethsamys; and he came to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, [beginning] at the gate of Ephraim as far as the gate of the corner, four hundred cubits.
καὶ τὸν ᾿Αμεσσίαν υἱὸν ᾿Ιωὰς υἱοῦ ᾿Οχοζίου συνέλαβεν ᾿Ιωὰς βασιλεὺς ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν Βαιθσαμύς. καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ καὶ καθεῖλεν ἐν τῷ τείχει ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ ἐν τῇ πύλῃ ᾿Εφραὶμ ἕως πύλης τῆς γωνίας τετρακοσίους πήχεις·

And he took the gold, ad the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king’s house, and the hostages, and returned to Samaria.
καὶ ἔλαβεν τὸ χρυσίον καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ εὑρεθέντα ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου καὶ ἐν θησαυροῖς οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῶν συμμίξεων καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν εἰς Σαμάρειαν.
и҆ взѧ̀ сребро̀ и҆ зла́то, и҆ всѧ̑ сосꙋ́ды ѡ҆брѣ̑теныѧ въ домꙋ̀ гдⷭ҇ни и҆ въ сокро́вищахъ до́мꙋ царе́ва, и҆ сы́ны смѣси́вшихсѧ, и҆ возврати́сѧ въ самарі́ю.
And the rest of the acts of Joas, [even] all that he did in his might, how he warred with Amessias king of Juda, are not these things written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων ᾿Ιωάς, ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἐν δυναστείᾳ αὐτοῦ, ἃ ἐπολέμησε μετὰ ᾿Αμεσσίου βασιλέως ᾿Ιούδα, οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν ᾿Ισραήλ;
И҆ прѡ́чаѧ слове́съ і҆ѡа́совыхъ, є҆ли̑ка сотворѝ въ си́лѣ свое́й, ꙗ҆́коже бра́сѧ со а҆мессі́ею царе́мъ і҆ꙋ́диным, не сїѧ̑ ли пи̑сана въ кни́зѣ слове́съ дні́й царе́й і҆и҃левыхъ;
And Joas slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead.
καὶ ἐκοιμήθη ᾿Ιωὰς μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ μετὰ τῶν βασιλέων ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ῾Ιεροβοὰμ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ.

And Amessias the son of Joas king of Juda lived after the death of Joas son of Joachaz king of Israel fifteen years.

И҆ прѡ́чаѧ слове́съ а҆мессі́евыхъ, и҆ всѧ̑ є҆ли̑ка сотворѝ, не сїѧ̑ ли пи̑сана въ кни́зѣ слове́съ дні́й царе́й і҆ꙋ́диныхъ;
And they formed a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachis: and they sent after him to Lachis, and slew him there.
καὶ συνεστράφησαν ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν σύστρεμμα ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ, καὶ ἔφυγεν εἰς Λαχίς· καὶ ἀπέστειλαν ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ εἰς Λαχὶς καὶ ἐθανάτωσαν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ.
И҆ воста́ша на него̀ полкѝ во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ: и҆ ᲂу҆бѣжѐ въ лахі́сы, и҆ посла́ша в̾слѣ́дъ є҆гѡ̀ въ лахі́сы, и҆ ᲂу҆би́ша є҆го̀ тꙋ̀:
And they brought him upon horses; and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.
καὶ ᾖραν αὐτὸν ἐφ᾿ ἵππων, καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πόλει Δαυίδ.
и҆ взѧ́ша є҆го̀ на ко́ни, и҆ погребе́нъ бы́сть со ѻ҆тцы̑ свои́ми во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ во гра́дѣ даві́довѣ.
And all the people of Juda took Azarias, and he was sixteen years old, and made him king in the room of his father Amessias.
καὶ ἔλαβε πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ᾿Ιούδα τὸν ᾿Αζαρίαν —καὶ αὐτὸς υἱὸς ἑκκαίδεκα ἐτῶν— καὶ ἐβασίλευσαν αὐτὸν ἀντὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ᾿Αμεσσίου.
И҆ поѧ́ша всѝ лю́дїе і҆ꙋ̑дины а҆зарі́ю, и҆ то́й сы́нъ шести́надесѧти лѣ́тъ, и҆ поста́виша є҆го̀ царе́мъ вмѣ́стѡ ѻ҆тца̀ є҆гѡ̀ а҆мессі́и:
He built Aeloth, and restored it to Juda, after the king slept with his fathers.
αὐτὸς ᾠκοδόμησε τὴν Αἰλὼθ καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν αὐτὴν τῷ ᾿Ιούδᾳ μετὰ τὸ κοιμηθῆναι τὸν βασιλέα μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ.
то́й созда̀ є҆лѡ́ѳъ, и҆ возвратѝ є҆го̀ і҆ꙋ́дѣ по ᲂу҆ме́ртвїи царѧ̀ со ѻ҆тцы̑ є҆гѡ̀.
In the fifteenth year of Amessias son of Joas king of Juda began Jeroboam son of Joas to reign over Israel in Samaria forty and one years.
᾿Εν ἔτει πεντεκαιδεκάτῳ τοῦ ᾿Αμεσσίου υἱῷ ᾿Ιωὰς βασιλεῖ ᾿Ιούδα ἐβασίλευσεν ῾Ιεροβοὰμ υἱὸς ᾿Ιωὰς ἐπὶ ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ἓν ἔτος.
Въ лѣ́то пѧтоена́десѧть а҆мессі́и сы́на і҆ѡа́са царѧ̀ і҆ꙋ́дина, ца́рствова і҆еровоа́мъ сы́нъ і҆ѡа́совъ над̾ і҆и҃лемъ въ самарі́и четы́редесѧть и҆ є҆ди́но лѣ́то,
23–25“In the fifteenth year of King Amaziah son of Joash of Judah, King Jeroboam son of Joash of Israel began to reign in Samaria; he reigned forty-one years. He restored the border of Israel from Lebo-hamath as far as the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word of the Lord, the God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet.” This is the same Jonah who preached the repentance of Nineveh. And the Sea of Arabah is the same that the Scripture calls elsewhere the “salt sea,” situated on the border with Canaan, of which the city of Hamath, beside the Mount Lebanon, is the other northern border. Jeroboam honored the prophet Jonah as his father had honored Elisha and recurred to his useful work, so that, being encouraged by his predictions and advice, was able to conquer back the cities occupied by the Syrians.
On the Second Book of Kings 14:23
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nabat, who led Israel to sin.
καὶ ἐποίησε τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου· οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ πασῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ῾Ιεροβοὰμ υἱοῦ Ναβάτ, ὃς ἐξήμαρτε τὸν ᾿Ισραήλ.
и҆ сотворѝ лꙋка́вое пред̾ гдⷭ҇емъ: не ѿстꙋпѝ ѿ всѣ́хъ грѣхѡ́въ і҆еровоа́ма сы́на нава́това, и҆́же въ грѣ́хъ введѐ і҆и҃лѧ:
He recovered the coast of Israel from the entering in of Aemath to the sea of Araba, according to the word of the Lord God of Israel, which he spoke by his servant Jonas the son of Amathi, the prophet of Gethchopher.
αὐτὸς ἀπέστησε τὸ ὅριον ᾿Ισραὴλ ἀπὸ εἰσόδου Αἰμὰθ ἕως τῆς θαλάσσης τῆς ῎Αραβα κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Κυρίου Θεοῦ ᾿Ισραήλ, ὃ ἐλάλησεν ἐν χειρὶ δούλου αὐτοῦ ᾿Ιωνᾶ υἱοῦ ᾿Αμαθὶ τοῦ προφήτου τοῦ ἐν Γεθχοφέρ.

"He restored the boundaries of Israel from the entrance of Hamath, etc." [2 Kings 14:25] It is said of Jeroboam, king of Israel: He restored the boundaries of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the sea of the Arabah. For the Lord saw [that] the affliction of Israel [was] very bitter, and that they were few in number, straitened and in want, and destitute, and Israel had no helper.
ὅτι εἶδε Κύριος τὴν ταπείνωσιν ᾿Ισραὴλ πικρὰν σφόδρα καὶ ὀλιγοστοὺς συνεχομένους καὶ ἐσπανισμένους καὶ ἐγκαταλελειμμένους, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ βοηθῶν τῷ ᾿Ισραήλ.
ꙗ҆́кѡ ви́дѣ гдⷭ҇ь смире́нїе і҆и҃лево го́рько ѕѣлѡ̀, и҆ ма́лѡ содержи́мыхъ, и҆ ᲂу҆ма́ленныхъ, и҆ ѡ҆ста́вленыхъ, и҆ не бѣ̀ помога́ющагѡ и҆̀мъ.
And the Lord said that he would not blot out the seed of Israel from under heaven; so he delivered them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joas.
καὶ οὐκ ἐλάλησε Κύριος ἐξαλεῖψαι τὸ σπέρμα ᾿Ισραὴλ ὑποκάτωθεν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἔσωσεν αὐτοὺς διὰ χειρὸς ῾Ιεροβοὰμ υἱοῦ ᾿Ιωάς.
