Commentary from 5 fathers
of the nations concerning whom the Lord forbade the children of Israel, [saying], Ye shall not go in to them, and they shall not come in to you, lest they turn away your hearts after their idols: Solomon clave to these in love. *
ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὧν ἀπεῖπε Κύριος τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ισραήλ· οὐκ εἰσελεύσεσθε εἰς αὐτούς, καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς ὑμᾶς, μὴ ἐκκλίνωσι τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὀπίσω εἰδώλων αὐτῶν· εἰς αὐτοὺς ἐκολλήθη Σαλωμὼν τοῦ ἀγαπῆσαι.*
ѿ ꙗ҆зы̑къ, и҆̀хже ѿречѐ гдⷭ҇ь сынѡ́мъ і҆и҃лєвымъ: не входи́те въ нѧ̀, и҆ ті́и да не вхо́дѧтъ въ ва́съ, да не ѿвратѧ́тъ дꙋ́шъ ва́шихъ в̾слѣ́дъ і҆́дѡлъ свои́хъ: къ тѣ̑мъ прилѣпи́сѧ соломѡ́нъ люби́ти,
And it came to pass in the time of the old age of Solomon, that his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as [was] the heart of David his father, and the strange women turned away his heart after their gods.
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν καιρῷ γήρους Σαλωμὼν καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ τελεία μετὰ Κυρίου Θεοῦ αὐτοῦ, καθὼς ἡ καρδία Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐξέκλιναν γυναῖκες αἱ ἀλλότριαι τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ ὀπίσω θεῶν αὐτῶν.
И҆ бы́сть въ вре́мѧ ста́рости соломѡ́ни, и҆ соврати́ша жєны̀ чꙋжді̑ѧ се́рдце є҆гѡ̀ в̾слѣ́дъ богѡ́въ и҆ны́хъ, и҆ не бѣ̀ се́рдце є҆гѡ̀ соверше́нно съ гдⷭ҇емъ бг҃омъ є҆гѡ̀, ꙗ҆́коже се́рдце даві́да ѻ҆тца̀ є҆гѡ̀,
Then Solomon built a high place to Chamos the idol of Moab, and to their king the idol of the children of Ammon
τότε ᾠκοδόμησε Σαλωμὼν ὑψηλὸν τῷ Χαμώς, εἰδώλῳ Μωὰβ καὶ τῷ βασιλεῖ αὐτῶν εἰδώλῳ υἱῶν ᾿Αμμὼν
и҆ хожда́ше соломѡ́нъ в̾слѣ́дъ а҆ста́рта ме́рзости сїдѡ́нскїѧ и҆ в̾слѣ́дъ царѧ̀ и҆́хъ, і҆́дѡла сынѡ́въ а҆ммѡ́нихъ.
and to Astarte the abomination of the Sidonians.
καὶ τῇ ᾿Αστάρτῃ βδελύγματι Σιδωνίων,
И҆ сотворѝ соломѡ́нъ лꙋка́вое пред̾ гдⷭ҇емъ: и҆ не хожда́ше в̾слѣ́дъ гдⷭ҇а, ꙗ҆́коже даві́дъ ѻ҆те́цъ є҆гѡ̀.
And thus he acted towards all his strange wives, who burnt incense and sacrificed to their idols.
καὶ οὕτως ἐποίησε πάσαις ταῖς γυναιξὶν αὐτοῦ ταῖς ἀλλοτρίαις, αἳ ἐθυμίων καὶ ἔθυον τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν.
Тогда̀ созда̀ соломѡ́нъ высо́ко (ка́пище) хамѡ́сꙋ, і҆́дѡлꙋ мѡа́влю, и҆ царю̀ и҆́хъ, і҆́дѡлꙋ сынѡ́въ а҆ммѡ́нихъ, и҆ а҆ста́ртѣ, ме́рзости сїдѡ́нстѣй, на горѣ̀ ꙗ҆́же пред̾ і҆ерⷭ҇ли́момъ:
7–8Solomon was in his time David’s son, a great man, through whom many holy precepts and healthful admonitions and divine mysteries have been wrought by the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures. Solomon himself was a lover of women and was rejected by God: and this lust was so great a snare to him that he was induced by women even to sacrifice to idols, as Scripture witnesses concerning him. But if, by his fall, what was delivered through him were blotted out, it would be judged that he had himself delivered these precepts and not that they were delivered through him. The mercy of God, therefore, and his Spirit, excellently wrought that whatever of good was declared through Solomon, might be attributed to God; and the man’s sin, to the man. What marvel that Solomon fell among God’s people? Did not Adam fall in paradise? Did not an angel fall from heaven and become the devil? We are thereby taught that no hope must be placed in any human being.
Expositions of the Psalms 127.1
And Solomon did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, he went not after the Lord, as David his father.
καὶ ἐποίησε Σαλωμὼν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου· οὐκ ἐπορεύθη ὀπίσω Κυρίου ὡς Δαυὶδ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ.
и҆ та́кѡ сотворѝ всѣ̑мъ жена́мъ свои̑мъ чꙋжди̑мъ, ꙗ҆̀же кадѧ́хꙋ и҆ жрѧ́хꙋ і҆́дѡлѡмъ свои̑мъ.
And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because he turned away his heart from the Lord God of Israel, who had appeared twice to him,
καὶ ὠργίσθη Κύριος ἐπὶ Σαλωμών, ὅτι ἐξέκλινε καρδίαν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ Κυρίου Θεοῦ ᾿Ισραὴλ τοῦ ὀφθέντος αὐτῷ δὶς
И҆ разгнѣ́васѧ гдⷭ҇ь на соломѡ́на, ꙗ҆́кѡ ᲂу҆клонѝ се́рдце своѐ ѿ гдⷭ҇а бг҃а і҆и҃лева, и҆ ꙗ҆́вльшагѡсѧ є҆мꙋ̀ два́жды
and charged him concerning this matter, by no means to go after other gods, but to take heed to do what the Lord God commanded him; neither was his heart perfect with the Lord, according to the heart of David his father.
καὶ ἐντειλαμένου αὐτῷ ὑπὲρ τοῦ λόγου τούτου, τὸ παράπαν μὴ πορευθῆναι ὀπίσω θεῶν ἑτέρων καὶ φυλάξασθαι ποιῆσαι, ἃ ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ Κύριος ὁ Θεός, οὐδ᾿ ἦν ἡ καρδία αὐτοῦ τελεία μετὰ Κυρίου κατὰ τὴν καρδίαν Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ.
и҆ заповѣ́давшагѡ є҆мꙋ̀ два́жды ѡ҆ словесѝ се́мъ, весма̀ не ходи́ти є҆мꙋ̀ в̾слѣ́дъ богѡ́въ и҆нѣ́хъ, но храни́ти и҆ твори́ти ꙗ҆̀же заповѣ́да є҆мꙋ̀ гдⷭ҇ь бг҃ъ,
And the Lord said to Solomon, Because it has been thus with thee, and thou hast not kept my commandments and my ordinances which I commanded thee, I will surely rend thy kingdom out of thy hand, and give it to thy servant.
καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς Σαλωμών· ἀνθ᾿ ὧν ἐγένετο ταῦτα μετὰ σοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐφύλαξας τὰς ἐντολάς μου καὶ τὰ προστάγματά μου, ἃ ἐνετειλάμην σοι, διαρρήσσων διαρρήξω τὴν βασιλείαν σου ἐκ χειρός σου καὶ δώσω αὐτὴν τῷ δούλῳ σου.
и҆ речѐ гдⷭ҇ь къ соломѡ́нꙋ: поне́же бы́ша сїѧ̑ съ тобо́ю, и҆ не сохрани́лъ є҆сѝ за́повѣдїй мои́хъ и҆ повелѣ́нїй мои́хъ, ꙗ҆̀же заповѣ́дахъ тебѣ̀, раздира́ѧ раздерꙋ̀ ца́рство твоѐ и҆з̾ рꙋкꙋ̀ твоє́ю и҆ да́мъ є҆̀ рабꙋ̀ твоемꙋ̀:
Only in thy days I will not do it for David thy father’s sake: [but] I will take it out of the hand of thy son.
πλὴν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις σου οὐ ποιήσω αὐτὰ διὰ Δαυὶδ τὸν πατέρα σου· ἐκ χειρὸς υἱοῦ σου λήψομαι αὐτήν.
ѻ҆ба́че во дни̑ твоѧ̑ не сотворю̀ си́хъ даві́да ра́ди ѻ҆тца̀ твоегѡ̀: ѿ рꙋки́ же сы́на твоегѡ̀ ѿимꙋ̀ є҆̀:
Only I will not take away the whole kingdom: I will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen.
πλὴν ὅλην τὴν βασιλείαν οὐ μὴ λάβω· σκῆπτρον ἓν δώσω τῷ υἱῷ σου διὰ Δαυὶδ τὸν δοῦλόν μου καὶ διὰ ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ τὴν πόλιν, ἣν ἐξελεξάμην.
то́кмѡ всегѡ̀ ца́рства не возмꙋ̀, ски́петръ є҆ди́нъ да́мъ сы́нꙋ твоемꙋ̀ даві́да ра́ди раба̀ моегѡ̀ и҆ і҆ерⷭ҇ли́ма ра́ди гра́да, є҆го́же и҆збра́хъ.
The son of this David, Solomon by name, was caught by the same snare as his father, and out of complacence to women fell away from the God of his fathers. You see how great an evil it is not to master pleasure, not to upset the ruling principle in nature and for a man to be slave of women. This same Solomon, then, who was formerly righteous and wise but who ran a risk of being deprived of all the kingdom on account of his sin, God permitted to keep the sixth part of the government on account of the renown of his father.
Letter to the Fallen Theodore 2.2
And the Lord raised up and enemy to Solomon, Ader the Idumaean, and Esrom son of Eliadae who [dwelt] in Raama, [and] Adadezer king of Suba his master; (and men gathered to him, and he was head of the conspiracy, and he seized on Damasec,) and they were adversaries to Israel all the days of Solomon: and Ader the Idumaean [was] of the seed royal in Idumaea.
Καὶ ἤγειρε Κύριος σατὰν τῷ Σαλωμὼν τὸν ῎Αδερ τὸν ᾿Ιδουμαῖον καὶ τὸν ᾿Εσρὼμ υἱὸν ᾿Ελιαδαέ, τὸν ἐν Ῥαεμμὰθ ᾿Αδραζὰρ βασιλέα Σουβὰ κύριον αὐτοῦ· καὶ συνηθροίσθησαν ἐπ᾿ αὐτὸν ἄνδρες, καὶ ἦν ἄρχων συστρέμματος καὶ προκατελάβετο τὴν Δαμασέκ· καὶ ἦσαν σατὰν τῷ ᾿Ισραὴλ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας Σαλωμών. καὶ ῎Αδερ ὁ ᾿Ιδουμαῖος ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος τῆς βασιλείας ἐν ᾿Ιδουμαίᾳ·
И҆ воздви́же гдⷭ҇ь проти́вника на соломѡ́на а҆де́ра і҆дꙋме́анина ѿ сѣ́мене ца́рска во і҆дꙋме́и.
The adversary has no power against us unless God has previously permitted it, in order that all our fear and devotion and obedience may be turned to God, since in temptations nothing is permitted evil, unless the power is granted by God.… Moreover, power is given to evil against us according to our sins, as it is written: “Who has given Jacob for spoil and Israel to those who despoiled him? Has not God, against whom they have sinned and were unwilling to walk in his ways and to hear his law, even poured out upon them the indignation of his fury?” And again when Solomon sinned and departed from the precepts and the ways of the Lord, it is set down: “And the Lord stirred up the adversary against Solomon himself.”
Treatise IV. On the Lord's Prayer 25
And it happened, that while David was utterly destroying Edom, while Joab captain of the host was going to bury the dead, when they slew every male in Idumaea;
καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐξολοθρεῦσαι Δαυὶδ τὸν ᾿Εδὼμ ἐν τῷ πορευθῆναι ᾿Ιωὰβ ἄρχοντα τῆς στρατιᾶς θάπτειν τοὺς τραυματίας, καὶ ἔκοψαν πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν ἐν τῇ ᾿Ιδουμαίᾳ —
И҆ бы́сть є҆гда̀ и҆скоренѝ даві́дъ є҆дѡ́ма, є҆гда̀ и҆́де і҆ѡа́въ воево́да вѡ́й погреба́ти побїє́нныѧ, и҆зсѣчѐ всѧ́къ мꙋ́жескъ по́лъ во і҆дꙋме́и:
(for Joab and all Israel abode there six months in Idumaea, until he utterly destroyed every male in Idumaea;)
ὅτι ἓξ μῆνας ἐνεκάθητο ἐκεῖ ᾿Ιωὰβ καὶ πᾶς ᾿Ισραὴλ ἐν τῇ ᾿Ιδουμαίᾳ, ἕως ὅτου ἐξωλόθρευσε πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν ἐν τῇ ᾿Ιδουμαίᾳ—
ꙗ҆́кѡ ше́сть мцⷭ҇ъ сѣдѧ́ше та́мѡ і҆ѡа́въ и҆ ве́сь і҆и҃ль во і҆дꙋме́и, до́ндеже и҆збѝ всѧ́къ мꙋ́жескъ по́лъ въ і҆дꙋме́и:
that Ader ran away, he and all the Idumaeans of the servants of his father with him; and they went into Egypt; and Ader [was then] a little child.
καὶ ἀπέδρα ῎Αδερ, αὐτὸς καὶ πάντες ἄνδρες ᾿Ιδουμαῖοι τῶν παίδων τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς Αἴγυπτον· καὶ ῎Αδερ παιδάριον μικρόν.
и҆ и҆збѣжѐ а҆де́ръ са́мъ и҆ всѝ мꙋ́жїе і҆дꙋме́йстїи ѿ ѻ҆трокѡ́въ ѻ҆тца̀ є҆гѡ̀ съ ни́мъ, и҆ внидо́ша во є҆гѵ́петъ: а҆де́ръ же бѧ́ше ѻ҆́трочищь ма́лъ.
And there rise up men out of the city of Madiam, and they come to Pharan, and take men with them, and come to Pharao king of Egypt: and Ader went in to Pharao, and he gave him a house, and appointed him provision.
καὶ ἀνίστανται ἄνδρες ἐκ τῆς πόλεως Μαδιὰμ καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς Φαρὰν καὶ λαμβάνουσιν ἄνδρας μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν καὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς Φαραὼ βασιλέα Αἰγύπτου, καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ῎Αδερ πρὸς Φαραώ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ οἶκον καὶ ἄρτους διέταξεν αὐτῷ.
И҆ воста́ша мꙋ́жїе и҆з̾ гра́да мадїа́мска, и҆ прїидо́ша въ фара́нъ, и҆ взѧ́ша мꙋже́й съ собо́ю и҆ прїидо́ша къ фараѡ́нꙋ царю̀ є҆гѵ́петскомꙋ. И҆ вни́де а҆де́ръ къ фараѡ́нꙋ, и҆ дадѐ є҆мꙋ̀ (ца́рь) до́мъ, и҆ пи́щꙋ ѡ҆предѣлѝ є҆мꙋ̀, и҆ зе́млю дадѐ є҆мꙋ̀.
And Ader found great favour in the sight of Pharao, and he gave him his wife’s sister in marriage, the elder sister of Thekemina.
καὶ εὗρεν ῎Αδερ χάριν ἐναντίον Φαραὼ σφόδρα, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα ἀδελφὴν τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ, ἀδελφὴν Θεκεμίνας τὴν μείζω.
И҆ ѡ҆брѣ́те а҆де́ръ благода́ть пред̾ ѻ҆чи́ма фараѡ́нима ѕѣлѡ̀, и҆ дадѐ є҆мꙋ̀ въ женꙋ̀ сестрꙋ̀ жены̀ своеѧ̀, сестрꙋ̀ ѳекемі́ны бо́льшꙋю.
And the sister of Thekemina bore to him, [even] to Ader, Ganebath her son; and Thekemina brought him up in the midst of the sons of Pharao, and Ganebath was in the midst of the sons of Pharao.
καὶ ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ ἡ ἀδελφὴ Θεκεμίνας τῷ ῎Αδερ τὸν Γανηβὰθ υἱὸν αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐξέθρεψεν αὐτὸν Θεκεμίνα ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν Φαραώ, καὶ ἦν Γανηβὰθ ἐν μέσῳ υἱῶν Φαραώ.
И҆ родѝ є҆мꙋ̀ сестра̀ ѳекемі́ны а҆де́рꙋ ганива́ѳа сы́на своего̀, и҆ воскормѝ є҆го̀ ѳекемі́на посредѣ̀ сынѡ́въ фараѡ́нихъ, и҆ бѣ̀ ганива́ѳъ посредѣ̀ сынѡ́въ фараѡ́нихъ.
And Ader heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers, and that Joab the captain of the host was dead; and Ader said to Pharao, Let me go, and I will return to my country.
καὶ ῎Αδερ ἤκουσεν ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ ὅτι κεκοίμηται Δαυὶδ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὅτι τέθνηκεν ᾿Ιωὰβ ὁ ἄρχων τῆς στρατιᾶς· καὶ εἶπεν ῎Αδερ πρὸς Φαραώ· ἐξαπόστειλόν με καὶ ἀποστρέψω εἰς τὴν γῆν μου.
И҆ а҆де́ръ ᲂу҆слы́ша бо є҆гѵ́птѣ, ꙗ҆́кѡ ᲂу҆́спе даві́дъ со ѻ҆тцы̑ свои́ми, и҆ ꙗ҆́кѡ ᲂу҆́мре і҆ѡа́въ воево́да во́инствꙋ, и҆ речѐ а҆де́ръ къ фараѡ́нꙋ: ѿпꙋсти́ мѧ, да возвращꙋ́сѧ въ зе́млю мою̀.
And Pharao said to Ader, What lackest thou with me? that lo! thou seekest to depart to thy country? and Ader said to him, By all means let me go. So Ader returned to his country; this [is] the mischief which Ader did, and he was a bitter enemy of Israel, and he reigned in the land of Edom. **
καὶ εἶπε Φαραὼ τῷ ῎Αδερ· τίνι σὺ ἐλαττονῇ μετ᾿ ἐμοῦ; καὶ ἰδοὺ σὺ ζητεῖς ἀπελθεῖν εἰς τὴν γῆν σου. καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ῎Αδερ, ὅτι ἐξαποστέλλων ἐξαποστελεῖς με· καὶ ἀνέστρεψεν ῎Αδερ εἰς τὴν γῆν αὐτοῦ. αὕτη ἡ κακία, ἣν ἐποίησεν ῎Αδερ· καὶ ἐβαρυθύμησεν ἐν ᾿Ισραὴλ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν γῇ ᾿Εδώμ. **
И҆ речѐ фараѡ́нъ а҆де́рꙋ: чи́мъ ты̀ не дово́ленъ є҆сѝ ᲂу҆ менє̀; и҆ сѐ, ты̀ про́сишисѧ ѿитѝ въ зе́млю свою̀; И҆ речѐ є҆мꙋ̀ а҆де́ръ: ꙗ҆́кѡ ѿпꙋща́ѧ да ѿпꙋ́стиши мѧ̀. И҆ возврати́сѧ а҆де́ръ въ зе́млю свою̀.
And Jeroboam the son of Nabat, the Ephrathite of Sarira, the son of a widow, [was] servant of Solomon.
Καὶ ῾Ιεροβοὰμ υἱὸς Ναβὰτ ὁ ᾿Εφραθὶ ἐκ τῆς Σαριρὰ υἱὸς γυναικὸς χήρας δοῦλος Σαλωμών.
И҆ і҆еровоа́мъ сы́нъ нава́товъ, є҆фра́ѳѧнинъ ѿ сарі́ры, сы́нъ жены̀ вдови́цы, ра́бъ соломѡ́новъ, и҆ воздви́же рꙋ́цѣ на царѧ̀ соломѡ́на.
And this [was the occasion of his lifting up [his] hands against king Solomon: now king Solomon built the citadel, he completed the fortification of the city of David his father.
καὶ τοῦτο τὸ πρᾶγμα ὡς ἐπῄρατο χεῖρας ἐπὶ βασιλέα Σαλωμών. καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Σαλωμὼν ᾠκοδόμησε τὴν ἄκραν, συνέκλεισε τὸν φραγμὸν τῆς πόλεως Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ.
И҆ сїѧ̀ вина̀, ꙗ҆́кѡ воздви́же рꙋ́цѣ на царѧ̀ соломѡ́на: ца́рь соломѡ́нъ созида́ше краегра́дїе и҆ ѡ҆гражда́ше стѣно́ю гра́дъ даві́да ѻ҆тца̀ своегѡ̀:
And the man Jeroboam was very strong; and Solomon saw the young man that he was active, and he set him over the levies of the house of Joseph.
καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος ῾Ιεροβοὰμ ἰσχυρὸς δυνάμει, καὶ εἶδε Σαλωμὼν τὸ παιδάριον ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἔργων ἐστί, καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὰς ἄρσεις οἴκου ᾿Ιωσήφ.
і҆еровоа́мъ же человѣ́къ крѣ́покъ си́лою. И҆ ви́дѣ соломѡ́нъ ѻ҆́трока, ꙗ҆́кѡ мꙋ́жъ дѣ́лъ є҆́сть, и҆ поста́ви є҆го̀ над̾ бремена́ми до́мꙋ і҆ѡ́сифова.
And it came to pass at that time, that Jeroboam went forth from Jerusalem, and Achia the Selonite the prophet found him in the way, and caused him to turn aside out of the way: and Achia was clad with a new garment, and they two [were] alone in the field.
καὶ ἐγενήθη ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ καὶ ῾Ιεροβοὰμ ἐξῆλθεν ἐξ ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ καὶ εὗρεν αὐτὸν ᾿Αχιὰ ὁ Σηλωνίτης ὁ προφήτης ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ ἀπέστησεν αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς ὁδοῦ· καὶ ᾿Αχιὰ περιβεβλημένος ἱματίῳ καινῷ, καὶ ἀμφότεροι μόνοι ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ.
И҆ бы́сть во вре́мѧ ѻ҆́но, и҆ і҆еровоа́мъ и҆зы́де и҆з̾ і҆ерⷭли́ма, и҆ ѡ҆брѣ́те є҆го̀ а҆хі́а силѡні́тѧнинъ прⷪ҇ро́къ на пꙋтѝ, и҆ совратѝ є҆го̀ съ пꙋтѝ: и҆ бѣ̀ а҆хі́а ѡ҆блече́нъ въ ри́зꙋ но́вꙋ: и҆ (бѣ́ста) ѻ҆́ба є҆ди̑ны на по́ли.
And Achia laid hold of his new garment that was upon him, and tore it [into] twelve pieces:

and he said to Jeroboam, Take to thyself ten pieces, for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Behold, I rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and will give thee ten tribes.

31–32In the Gospel there is a proof of this mystery of unity, this inseparable bond of harmony, when the coat of the Lord Jesus Christ is not cut or rent at all. The garment is received whole and the coat taken into possession unspoiled and undivided by those who cast lots for Christ’s garment, asking who should put on Christ. Holy Scripture says of this, “But for the coat, because it was not sewn but woven from the top throughout, they said to each other: Let us not rend it but casts lots for it, whose it shall be.” He showed a unity that came from the top, that is, from heaven and the Father, a unity that could by no means be rent by one who received and possessed it. Its wholeness and unity remained solid and unbreakable forever. He who rends and divides the church cannot possess the garment of Christ. In contrast, when at Solomon’s death his kingdom and people were being rent, the prophet Ahijah, meeting King Jeroboam in the field, rent his garment into twelve pieces, saying, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for thus says the Lord: Behold, I rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten scepters to you; but he shall have two scepters for my servant David’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake, the city that I have chosen, to put my name there.” When the twelve tribes of Israel were being rent, the prophet Ahijah rent his garment. But since Christ’s people cannot be rent, his coat, woven throughout as a single whole, was not rent by its owners. Undivided, conjoined, coherent, it proves the unbroken harmony of our people who have put on Christ. By the type and symbol of his garment he has manifested the unity of the church.

31–32Here God’s mercy is absolutely evident. Even though he knew how wicked Jeroboam was, [God] appoints him king in order to show that, as far as it depends on him, his gifts are never denied but showered on everyone. Humans themselves, however, refuse them deliberately.

The words “so that David may always have a lamp” refer to that small part of the kingdom which was like the sun in the abundance of its light: “Your throne will be like the sun before me.” Moreover, as we light many firebrands from a lamp, so a large number [of kings] will descend from the royal lineage of David “until he, to whom kingship belongs, comes.”

And I will take thee, and thou shalt reign as thy soul desires, and thou shalt be king over Israel.
καὶ σὲ λήψομαι καὶ βασιλεύσεις ἐν οἷς ἐπιθυμεῖ ἡ ψυχή σου, καὶ σὺ ἔσῃ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τὸν ᾿Ισραήλ.

And king Solomon slept with his fathers, and Roboam his son reigned in his stead. **

The hands of the sinful woman were stretched out over his feet, that they might receive a gift from his divinity. Our Lord, therefore, showed his humanity so that the sinful woman might approach him. He also revealed his divinity in order that the Pharisee might be found guilty by him. Consequently, the sinful woman could scoff at the cunning thoughts of him who had been scoffing at her tears. She, through her love, brought into the open the tears that were hidden in the depths of her eyes, and [the Lord], because of her courage, brought into the open the thoughts that were hidden in the Pharisee. The sinful woman thought he was like God. Her faith was witness to this. Simon thought he was [merely] like a man. What he had worked out in his mind showed this. Our Lord, therefore, standing in the middle, worked out a parable between the two of them, so that the sinful woman might be encouraged through his pronouncing the parable and the Pharisee might be denounced through the explanation of the parable.But now, likewise, we are in the middle; and like Solomon we have fallen between women. But, even if we, like Solomon, have fallen between women, we are not, like Solomon, wounded by women. For these Gentile women were turning Solomon aside from the fear of God to their idols by means of their allurements. We place the faith of the Gentile women above the heroic exploits of the Hebrew women. For the latter, through the wholeness of their bodies, rendered Solomon’s healthy faith sick, while the former, through their being healed, restore our ailing faith to health. Who therefore would not [wish] to be healed [by such faith]?
Commentary on Tatian’s Diatessaron 7.18
The words “the wives turned away his heart” do not mean that Solomon himself apostatized and worshiped the idols but that he gave [his wives] freedom to worship their idols without preventing them or converting them, as his father David [had done]. Therefore, since “man and wife become one flesh,” and the Scripture usually attributes to them both the action of one because of their union … this is why [Solomon] is justly rebuked for allowing his wives to adore [the idols]. Silence, as they say, expresses consent. Other commentators assert that [Solomon] worships the idols but is not punished, even though he deserved it, thanks to his father and all his merits and toil in building the house.

And the Lord raised up [another] adversary unto Solomon, Rezon son of Eliadae of Barameeth [who had fled] from Adadezer king of Suba his lord.
