Commentary from 1 father
And Nadab and Abiud died before their father, and they had no sons: so Eleazar and Ithamar the sons of Aaron ministered as priests.
καὶ ἀπέθανε Ναδὰβ καὶ ᾿Αβιοὺδ ἐναντίον τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῶν, καὶ υἱοὶ οὐκ ἦσαν αὐτοῖς· καὶ ἱεράτευσεν ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ ᾿Ιθάμαρ υἱοὶ ᾿Ααρών.
И҆ ᲂу҆мро́ста нада́въ и҆ а҆вїꙋ́дъ пре́жде ѻ҆тца̀ своегѡ̀, и҆ сы́нове не бы́ша и҆́ма: и҆ свѧще́нствова є҆леаза́ръ и҆ і҆ѳама́ръ, сы́нове а҆арѡ̑ни.
And David distributed them, even Sadoc of the sons of Eleazar, and Achimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their numbering, according to their service, according to the houses of their fathers.
καὶ διεῖλεν αὐτοὺς Δαυὶδ καὶ Σαδὼκ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ ᾿Αχιμέλεχ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ᾿Ιθάμαρ κατὰ τὴν ἐπίσκεψιν αὐτῶν, κατὰ τὴν λειτουργίαν αὐτῶν, κατ᾿ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν.
И҆ раздѣлѝ и҆̀хъ даві́дъ, и҆ садѡ́къ ѿ сынѡ́въ є҆леаза́ровыхъ, а҆хїмеле́хъ же ѿ сынѡ́въ і҆ѳама́ровыхъ по сочисле́нїю и҆́хъ, по слꙋже́нїю и҆́хъ и҆ по домѡ́мъ ѻ҆те́чествъ и҆́хъ.
And there were found [among] the sons of Eleazar more chiefs of the mighty ones, than of the sons of Ithamar: and he divided them, sixteen heads of families to the sons of Eleazar, eight according to [their] families to the sons of Ithamar.
καὶ εὑρέθησαν οἱ υἱοὶ ᾿Ελεάζαρ πλείους εἰς ἄρχοντας τῶν δυνατῶν παρὰ τοὺς υἱοὺς ᾿Ιθάμαρ, καὶ διεῖλεν αὐτούς, τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ελεάζαρ ἄρχοντας εἰς οἴκους πατριῶν ἑκκαίδεκα, καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ιθάμαρ κατ᾿ οἴκους πατριῶν ὀκτώ.
И҆ ѡ҆брѣто́шасѧ сы́нове є҆леаза́рѡвы мно́жайшїи въ нача́льники си́лъ, не́жели сы́нове і҆ѳама́рѡвы: и҆ раздѣлѝ и҆̀хъ сынѡ́мъ є҆леаза́рѡвымъ въ нача́льники въ до́мы ѻ҆те́чествъ шестьна́десѧть, и҆ сынѡ́мъ і҆ѳама́рѡвымъ по домѡ́мъ ѻ҆те́чествъ и҆́хъ, ѻ҆́смь.
And he divided them according to their lots, one with the other; for there were those who had charge of the holy things, and those who had charge of the [house] of the Lord among the sons of Eleazar, and among the sons of Ithamar.
καὶ διεῖλεν αὐτοὺς κατὰ κλήρους τούτους πρὸς τούτους, ὅτι ἦσαν ἄρχοντες τῶν ἁγίων καὶ ἄρχοντες Κυρίου ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ιθάμαρ.
Раздѣли́ же и҆̀хъ по жре́бїємъ междꙋ̀ и҆́ми, поне́же бѧ́хꙋ нача̑льницы свѧти́лища и҆ нача̑льницы бж҃їи въ сынѣ́хъ є҆леаза́ровыхъ и҆ въ сынѣ́хъ і҆ѳама́ровыхъ:
And Samaias the son of Nathanael, the scribe, [of the family] of Levi, wrote them down before the king, and the princes, and Sadoc the priest, and Achimelech the son of Abiathar [were present]; and the heads of the families of the priests and the Levites, each of a household [were assigned] one to Eleazar, and one to Ithamar.
καὶ ἔγραψεν αὐτοὺς Σαμαΐας υἱὸς Ναθαναὴλ ὁ γραμματεὺς ἐκ τοῦ Λευὶ κατέναντι τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τῶν ἀρχόντων καὶ Σαδὼκ ὁ ἱερεὺς καὶ ᾿Αχιμέλεχ υἱὸς ᾿Αβιάθαρ καὶ ἄρχοντες τῶν πατριῶν τῶν ἱερέων καὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν, οἴκου πατριᾶς εἷς εἷς τῷ ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ εἷς εἷς τῷ ᾿Ιθάμαρ.
ѡ҆писа́ же и҆̀хъ самаі́а сы́нъ наѳанаи́ль пи́сарь ѿ леѵі̑тъ пред̾ царе́мъ и҆ кнѧ̑зи и҆ садѡ́комъ свѧще́нникомъ и҆ а҆хїмеле́хомъ сы́номъ а҆вїаѳа́ра, и҆ нача̑льницы ѻ҆те́чествъ свѧще́нникѡвъ и҆ леѵі́тѡвъ до́мꙋ ѻ҆те́чества, є҆ди́нъ ко є҆леаза́рꙋ и҆ є҆ди́нъ ко і҆ѳама́рꙋ.
And the first lot came out to Joarim, the second to Jedia,
καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ κλῆρος ὁ πρῶτος τῷ ᾿Ιωαρίμ, τῷ ᾿Ιεδίᾳ ὁ δεύτερος,
И҆ и҆зы́де жре́бїй пе́рвый і҆ѡарі́мꙋ, і҆еді́ю вторы́й,
the third to Charib, the fourth to Seorim,
τῷ Χαρὶβ ὁ τρίτος, τῷ Σεωρὶμ ὁ τέταρτος,
харі́вꙋ тре́тїй, сеѡрі́мꙋ четве́ртый,
the fifth to Melchias, the sixth to Meiamin,
τῷ Μελχίᾳ ὁ πέμπτος, τῷ Μεϊαμὶν ὁ ἕκτος,
мелхі́ю пѧ́тый, меїамі́нꙋ шесты́й,
the seventh to Cos, the eighth to Abia,
τῷ Κὼς ὁ ἕβδομος, τῷ ᾿Αβίᾳ ὁ ὄγδοος,
а҆ккѡ́сꙋ седмы́й, а҆ві́и ѻ҆смы́й,
the ninth to Jesus, the tenth to Sechenias,
τῷ ᾿Ιησοῦ ὁ ἔνατος, τῷ Σεχενίᾳ ὁ δέκατος,

the eleventh to Eliabi, the twelfth to Jacim,
τῷ ᾿Ελιαβὶ ὁ ἑνδέκατος, τῷ ᾿Ιακὶμ ὁ δωδέκατος,
є҆лїасі́вꙋ є҆динонадесѧ́тый, і҆акі́мꙋ дванадесѧ́тый,
the thirteenth to Oppha, the fourteenth to Jesbaal,
τῷ ᾿Οπφᾷ ὁ τρισκαιδέκατος, τῷ ᾿Ιεσβαὰλ ὁ τεσσαρεσκαιδέκατος,
ѻ҆ффа́ю тринадесѧ́тый, і҆есваа́лꙋ четыренадесѧ́тый,
the fifteenth to Belga, the sixteenth to Emmer,
τῷ Βελγᾷ ὁ πεντεκαιδέκατος, τῷ ᾿Εμμὴρ ὁ ἑκκαιδέκατος,
велгі́и пѧтыйна́десѧть, є҆мми́рꙋ шестыйна́десѧть,
the seventeenth to Chezin, the eighteenth to Aphese,
τῷ Χηζὶν ὁ ἑπτακαιδέκατος, τῷ ᾿Αφεσὴ ὁ ὀκτωκαιδέκατος,
і҆еѳі́ю седмыйна́десѧть, а҆фессі́ю ѻ҆смыйна́десѧть,
the nineteenth to Phetaea, the twentieth to Ezekel,
τῷ Φεταίᾳ ὁ ἐννεακαιδέκατος, τῷ ᾿Εζεκὴλ ὁ εἰκοστός,
фетті́ю девѧтыйна́десѧть, и҆ є҆зекі́илю двадесѧ́тый,
the twenty-first to Achim, the twenty-second to Gamul,
τῷ ᾿Αχὶμ ὁ εἷς καὶ εἰκοστός, τῷ Γαμοὺλ ὁ δεύτερος καὶ εἰκοστός,
а҆хі́нꙋ два́десѧть пе́рвый, гамꙋи́лꙋ два́десѧть вторы́й,
the twenty-third to Adallai, the twenty-fourth to Maasai.
τῷ ᾿Αδαλλαὶ ὁ τρίτος καὶ εἰκοστός, τῷ Μαασαὶ ὁ τέταρτος καὶ εἰκοστός.
далеі́ю два́десѧть тре́тїй, і҆еи́лю два́десѧть четве́ртый.
This [is] their numbering according to their service to go into the house of the Lord, according to their appointment by the hand of Aaron their father, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
αὕτη ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν κατὰ τὴν λειτουργίαν αὐτῶν τοῦ εἰσπορεύεσθαι εἰς οἶκον Κυρίου κατὰ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτῶν διὰ χειρὸς ᾿Ααρὼν πατρὸς αὐτῶν, ὡς ἐνετείλατο Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς ᾿Ισραήλ.
Сїѐ сочисле́нїе и҆́хъ по слꙋже́нїю и҆́хъ входи́ти въ до́мъ гдⷭ҇ень по чи́нꙋ своемꙋ̀, рꙋко́ю а҆арѡ́на ѻ҆тца̀ и҆́хъ, ꙗ҆́коже повелѣ̀ гдⷭ҇ь бг҃ъ і҆и҃левъ.
And for the sons of Levi that were left, [even] for the sons of Ambram, Sobael: for the sons of Sobael, Jedia.
Καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Λευὶ τοῖς καταλοίποις· τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Αμβρὰμ Σωβαήλ· τοῖς υἱοῖς Σωβαὴλ ᾿Ιεδία.
И҆ сынѡ́мъ леѵі̑инымъ прѡ́чїимъ: сынѡ́мъ а҆мвра̑млимъ сѡваи́лъ, сынѡ́мъ сѡваи̑лимъ і҆адаі́а,
For Raabia, the chief [was] [Isaari],
τῷ Ῥααβίᾳ ὁ ἄρχων ᾿Ιεσίας,
сынѡ́мъ раві̑инымъ нача́льникъ і҆есі́а,
and for Isaari, Salomoth: for the sons of Salomoth, Jath.
καὶ τῷ ᾿Ισααρὶ Σαλωμώθ· τοῖς υἱοῖς Σαλωμὼθ ᾿Ιάθ.
сынѡ́мъ і҆асарі̑инымъ салѡмѡ́ѳъ, сынѡ́мъ салѡмѡ́ѳѡвымъ і҆а́ѳъ:
The sons of Ecdiu; Amadia the second, Jaziel the third, Jecmoam the fourth.
υἱοὶ ᾿Ιεδιοῦ· ᾿Αμαδία ὁ δεύτερος, ᾿Ιαζιὴλ ὁ τρίτος, ᾿Ιεκμοὰμ ὁ τέταρτος.
сы́нове і҆едїꙋ́а: і҆ерїа́въ пе́рвый, а҆маді́а вторы́й, і҆азїи́лъ тре́тїй, і҆екмоа́мъ четве́ртый.
For the sons of Oziel, Micha: the sons of Micha; Samer.
τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Οζιὴλ Μιχά· υἱοὶ Μιχὰ Σαμήρ.
Сынѡ́мъ ѻ҆зїи̑лимъ мі́ха, сы́нове мі̑хины сами́ръ:
The brother of Micha; Isia, the son of Isia; Zacharia.
ἀδελφὸς Μιχὰ ᾿Ισία· υἱὸς ᾿Ισία Ζαχαρία.
бра́тъ мі́хинъ і҆сі́а, сы́нъ і҆сі́инъ заха́рїа.
The sons of Merari, Mooli, and Musi: the sons of Ozia,
υἱοὶ Μεραρὶ Μοολὶ καὶ Μουσί. υἱοὶ ᾿Οζία υἱοὶ Βοννί.
Сы́нове мера̑рїны: моолі̀ и҆ мꙋсі̀, сы́нъ ѻ҆зі́инъ вонні́й:
[That is, the sons] of Merari by Ozia,-- his sons [were] Isoam, and Sacchur, and Abai.
υἱοὶ Μεραρὶ τῷ ᾿Οζίᾳ, υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ ᾿Ισοὰμ καὶ Σακχοὺρ καὶ ᾿Αβαΐ,
сы́нове мера̑рїны ѻ҆зі́а: сы́нове є҆гѡ̀ і҆есома̀ и҆ закхꙋ́ръ и҆ і҆ѡвѳі̀:
To Mooli [were born] Eleazar, and Ithamar; and Eleazar died, and had no sons.
τῷ Μοολὶ ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ ᾿Ιθάμαρ· καὶ ἀπέθανεν ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ οὐκ ἦσαν αὐτῷ υἱοί.
моолі́ю є҆леаза́ръ (и҆ і҆ѳама́ръ). Оу҆́мре же є҆леаза́ръ, не бѣ́ша є҆мꙋ̀ сы́нове.
For Kis; the sons of Kis; Jerameel.
τῷ Κίς· υἱοὶ τοῦ Κὶς ῾Ιεραμεήλ.
Кі́сꙋ сы́нъ кі́совъ і҆ерамеи́лъ.
And the sons of Musi; Mooli, and Eder, and Jerimoth. These [were] the sons of the Levites according to the houses of their families.
καὶ υἱοὶ τοῦ Μουσὶ Μοολὶ καὶ ᾿Εδὲρ καὶ ᾿Ιαριμώθ. οὗτοι υἱοὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν κατ᾿ οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν.
Сы́нове мꙋ̑сїны: моолі̀ и҆ є҆де́ръ и҆ є҆рїмѡ́ѳъ. Сі́и сы́нове леѵі́тстїи по домѡ́мъ ѻ҆те́чествъ свои́хъ.
And they also received lots as their brethren the sons of Aaron before the king; Sadoc also, and Achimelech, and the chiefs of the families of the priests and of the Levites, principal heads of families, even as their younger brethren.
καὶ ἔλαβον καὶ αὐτοὶ κλήρους καθὼς οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτῶν υἱοὶ ᾿Ααρὼν ἐναντίον τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ Σαδὼκ καὶ ᾿Αχιμέλεχ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν πατριῶν τῶν ἱερέων καὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν, πατριάρχαι ἀραὰβ καθὼς οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ οἱ νεώτεροι.
Прїѧ́ша же и҆ ті́и жрє́бїѧ, ꙗ҆́коже и҆ бра́тїѧ и҆́хъ сы́нове а҆арѡ̑ни, пред̾ даві́домъ царе́мъ и҆ садѡ́комъ и҆ а҆хїмеле́хомъ и҆ нача̑льники ѻ҆те́чествъ свѧще́нническихъ и҆ леѵі́тскихъ: патрїа́рси а҆арѡ̑ни, ꙗ҆́коже и҆ бра́тїѧ є҆гѡ̀ ю҆нѣ́йшїи.
And [they number] the sons of Aaron in [their] division, Nadab, and Abiud, and Eleazar, and Ithamar.
ΚΑΙ τοῖς υἱοῖς ᾿Ααρὼν διαιρέσεις· Ναδὰβ καὶ ᾿Αβιοὺδ καὶ ᾿Ελεάζαρ καὶ ᾿Ιθάμαρ.
И҆ сынѡ́мъ а҆арѡ̑нимъ раздѣлє́нїѧ: сы́нове а҆арѡ̑ни: нада́въ и҆ а҆вїꙋ́дъ, и҆ є҆леаза́ръ и҆ і҆ѳама́ръ.
If you of the brotherhood would take delight in hearing who that Abijah was from whose priestly division it is said that Zechariah derived his rank, he was the high priest during the time of King David. By the Lord's order, Aaron was the first single high priest appointed by Moses under the law; after his death his son, Eleazar, received the gift of the high priesthood. When he too had died, his son, Phinehas, became his successor as high priest. Thus up to the time of King David, over a period of about 470 years, one after the other became heir of the high priesthood. When David, burning with great zeal for religion, wanted to fashion a temple for the Lord, the Lord willed this to be carried out by his son Solomon instead. David himself nevertheless was concerned carefully to make ready everything that pertained to the future construction and reverent ceremonies of this temple. He also arranged for singers to chant the psalms daily at the time of sacrifice, to the tune of musical instruments. This was to arouse the minds of the people in attendance to remembrance and love of heavenly matters, not only by the sublimity of the words that were sung, but also by the sweetness of the sounds by which they were sung. Desiring that, as the worship and magnificence of the temple increased, the graceful exercise of the ministry and the assembly of those ministering might also increase, David called together all the descendants of the sons of Aaron, those descending from the stock of Eleazar and those from the stock of Ithamar, and he divided them into twenty-four sections, choosing individuals from each section as high priests; the rest, who were in the sections of the lower priesthood (which is now called that of priest), he ordered to exercise their offices with this provision, namely, that when any one of the high priests departed this life, whoever was considered the best in his section should succeed him in the high priesthood.David set up these sections in such a way that the individual high priests, along with the priests who were under them, should minister for eight successive days, that is, from sabbath to sabbath. And although all in the priestly class were equal, yet one of them who seemed to be more worthy of special reverence and more outstanding and in power was to have the name of "high priest." As to the order that was to be observed among these sections, it was determined by the casting of lots in the presence of King David and the leading persons of the priestly and Levitical families. In this distribution of lots, it is found that Abijah, from whose priestly division and generation Zechariah sprang, occupied the eighth place. It was fitting that the herald of the new covenant, in which the glory of the resurrection was declared to the world, was born in the place of the eighth lot, both because our Lord rose from the dead on the day after the sabbath, which is the eighth day following the seven days of creation, and because we are promised at the end of time an eighth age of everlasting resurrection, following the six ages of this world and a seventh of tranquility for souls, which comes in the next life.
