2 Corinthians 1:8–11 § 168
Prokeimenon, Tone 5

Thou, O Lord, shalt protect us / and preserve us from this generation for ever!

Verse: Save me, O Lord, for there is no longer any that is godly.

Brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us, you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.

Alleluia, Tone 6

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness.

Verse: Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Galatians 1:11–19 § 200 (St James)

St James

Prokeimenon, Tone 8

Their proclamation has gone out into all the earth / and their words to the ends of the universe!

Verse: The heavens are telling the Glory of God, and the firmament proclaims His handiwork!

Brethren, I make known to you that which was preached by me is not according to man. For I neither received it from man, neither was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former conduct in the religion of the Jews, how I persecuted the Church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it. And I advanced in the religion of the Jews beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me by His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, neither did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were Apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and remained with him for fifteen days. But I saw none of the other Apostles except for James, the brother of the Lord ...

Alleluia, Tone 1

The heavens shall confess Thy wonders, O Lord, and Thy truth in the congregation of the Saints!

Verse: God is glorified in the council of the Saints!

Prokeimenon, Tone 6

Blessed is the way in which thou shalt walk today, O soul / for a place of rest is prepared for thee!

Verse: Return thou unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt graciously with thee.

Brethren, I would not have you to be ignorant, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord shall by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the Archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Alleluia, Tone 6

Blessed is he [she] whom Thou hast chosen and taken, O Lord.

Luke 5.27-32 § 20
27

And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

28

And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

29

And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

30

But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

καὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ λέγοντες· διατί μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε;

И҆ ропта́хꙋ кни́жницы на него̀ и҆ фарїсе́є, ко ᲂу҆чн҃кѡ́мъ є҆гѡ̀ глаго́люще: почто̀ съ мытари̑ и҆ грѣ̑шники ꙗ҆́сте и҆ пїе́те;

31

And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

32

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Matthew 13.54-58 § 56 (St James)

St James

54

And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

καὶ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὴν πατρίδα αὐτοῦ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ αὐτῶν, ὥστε ἐκπλήττεσθαι αὐτοὺς καὶ λέγειν· πόθεν τούτῳ ἡ σοφία αὕτη καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις;

И҆ прише́дъ во ѻ҆те́чествїе своѐ, ᲂу҆ча́ше и҆̀хъ на со́нмищи и҆́хъ, ꙗ҆́кѡ диви́тисѧ и҆̀мъ и҆ глаго́лати: ѿкꙋ́дꙋ семꙋ̀ премⷣрость сїѧ̀ и҆ си̑лы;

55

Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τοῦ τέκτονος υἱός; οὐχὶ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ λέγεται Μαριὰμ καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ Ἰάκωβος καὶ Ἰωσῆς καὶ Σίμων καὶ Ἰούδας;

не се́й ли є҆́сть текто́новъ сн҃ъ; не мт҃и ли є҆гѡ̀ нарица́етсѧ мр҃їа́мъ, и҆ бра́тїѧ є҆гѡ̀ і҆а́кѡвъ и҆ і҆ѡсі́й, и҆ сі́мѡнъ и҆ і҆ꙋ́да;

56

And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ πᾶσαι πρὸς ἡμᾶς εἰσι; πόθεν οὖν τούτῳ ταῦτα πάντα;

и҆ сєстры̀ є҆гѡ̀ не всѧ̑ ли въ на́съ сꙋ́ть; ѿкꙋ́дꙋ ᲂу҆̀бо семꙋ̀ сїѧ̑ всѧ̑;

57

And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

58

And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

John 5.24-30 § 16 (Departed)

Departed

24

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27

And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29

And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
