Composite 2 - Proverbs 10, 3, 8 § 177 (St Raphael)

St Raphael

The memory of a just man is praised, and the Lord’s blessing is upon his head. Blessed is one who has found wisdom; a mortal who knows understanding. To import her is better than treasures of gold and silver. She is more valuable than precious stones; nothing of value equals her worth. Justice proceeds from her mouth; she bears law and mercy on her tongue. Therefore, my children, listen to me, for I speak weighty things. And blessed is the one who keeps my ways. For my goings out are the goings out of life, and favour is prepared from the Lord. Therefore I exhort you, and utter my voice to the children of humankind. Because I, Wisdom, have prepared counsel, knowledge and understanding. I have called on them. Counsel and sureness are mine; prudence is mine, strength is mine. I love those who are my friends, while those who seek me will find grace. You innocent, then, understand cunning; you untaught, take it to heart. Listen to me, for I will speak weighty things, and I will open right things from my lips. Because my throat will meditate truth; lying lips are abominable before me. All the words of my mouth are with justice, there is nothing crooked in them nor twisted. They are all straight for those who understand, and right for those who find knowledge. For I teach you what is true, that your hope may be in the Lord and that you may be filled with spirit.

Proverbs 10.31-11.12 § 84 (St Raphael)

St Raphael

Chapter 10

31

The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom: but the tongue of the unjust shall perish.

32

The lips of just men drop grace: but the mouth of the ungodly is perverse.

Chapter 11

1

False balances are an abomination before the Lord: but a just weight is acceptable unto him.

2

Wherever pride enters, there will be also disgrace: but the mouth of the lowly meditates wisdom.

3

When a just man dies he leaves regret: but the destruction of the ungodly is speedy, and causes joy. [See Appendix ]

4

[See Appendix ]

5

Righteousness traces out blameless paths: but ungodliness encounters unjust dealing.

6

The righteousness of upright men delivers them: but transgressors are caught in their own destruction.

7

At the death of a just man his hope does not perish: but the boast of the ungodly perishes.

8

A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place.

9

In the mouth of ungodly men is a snare to citizens: but the understanding of righteous men is prosperous.

10

In the prosperity of righteous men a city prospers: [See Appendix ]

11

[See Appendix ] but by the mouth of ungodly men it is overthrown.

12

A man void of understanding sneers at [his fellow] citizens: but a sensible man is quiet.

Wisdom of Solomon 4.7-15 § 101 (St Raphael)

St Raphael

7

But though the righteous be prevented with death, yet shall he be in rest.

8

For honourable age is not that which standeth in length of time, nor that is measured by number of years.

9

But wisdom is the gray hair unto men, and an unspotted life is old age.

10

He pleased God, and was beloved of him: so that living among sinners he was translated.

11

Yea speedily was he taken away, lest that wickedness should alter his understanding, or deceit beguile his soul.

12

For the bewitching of naughtiness doth obscure things that are honest; and the wandering of concupiscence doth undermine the simple mind.

13

He, being made perfect in a short time, fulfilled a long time:

14

For his soul pleased the Lord: therefore hasted he to take him away from among the wicked.

15

This the people saw, and understood it not, neither laid they up this in their minds, That his grace and mercy is with his saints, and that he hath respect unto his chosen.

John 10.1-9 § 35ctr (St Raphael)

St Raphael

1

VERILY, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

2

But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

3

To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

4

And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

5

And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

6

This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

7

Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

8

All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.

9

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Divine Liturgy

1 John 3:10–20 § 72

My beloved, Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another, not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous. Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whosoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know the love of God, because He laid down His life for us; and we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and [He] knoweth all things.

Hebrews 13:17–21 § 335 (St Raphael)

St Raphael

Prokeimenon, Tone 7

Precious in the sight of the Lord / is the death of His Saints!

Verse: What shall I render to the Lord for all His bounty to me?

Brethren, Obey those who rule over you, and submit yourselves, for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you. Pray for us; for we are confident that we have a good conscience, in all things desiring to live honestly. But I beseech you rather to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now may the God of peace, that brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the Blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well pleasing iri His sight, through Jesus Christ; to Whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Alleluia, Tone 2

Thy priests shall clothe themselves with righteousness, and Thy Saints shall rejoice!

Mark 14.10-42 § 64
10

And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them.

11

And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

12

And the first day of unleavened bread, when they killed the passover, his disciples said unto him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare that thou mayest eat the passover?

Καὶ τῇ πρώτῃ ἡμέρᾳ τῶν ἀζύμων, ὅτε τὸ πάσχα ἔθυον, λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· ποῦ θέλεις ἀπελθόντες ἑτοιμάσωμεν ἵνα φάγῃς τὸ πάσχα;

И҆ въ пе́рвый де́нь ѡ҆прѣснѡ́къ, є҆гда̀ па́схꙋ жрѧ́хꙋ, глаго́лаша є҆мꙋ̀ ᲂу҆чн҃цы̀ є҆гѡ̀: гдѣ̀ хо́щеши, ше́дше ᲂу҆гото́ваемъ, да ꙗ҆́си па́схꙋ;

13

And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him.

14

And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house, The Master saith, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

καὶ ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ, εἴπατε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅτι ὁ διδάσκαλος λέγει· ποῦ ἐστι τὸ κατάλυμά μου ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω;

и҆ и҆дѣ́же а҆́ще вни́детъ, рцы́та господи́нꙋ до́мꙋ, ꙗ҆́кѡ ᲂу҆чт҃ль гл҃етъ: гдѣ̀ є҆́сть вита́льница, и҆дѣ́же па́схꙋ со ᲂу҆чн҃ки̑ мои́ми снѣ́мъ;

15

And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us.

16

And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

17

And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.

18

And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.

19

And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?

οἱ δὲ ἤρξαντο λυπεῖσθαι καὶ λέγειν αὐτῷ εἷς καθ᾿ εἷς· μήτι ἐγώ; καὶ ἄλλος· μήτι ἐγώ;

Ѻ҆ни́ же нача́ша скорбѣ́ти и҆ глаго́лати є҆мꙋ̀ є҆ди́нъ по є҆ди́номꙋ: є҆да̀ а҆́зъ; И҆ дрꙋгі́й: є҆да̀ а҆́зъ;

20

And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.

21

The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

22

And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23

And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24

And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

25

Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

26

And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

27

And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.

28

But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee.

29

But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.

30

And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.

31

But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.

32

And they came to a place which was named Gethsemane: and he saith to his disciples, Sit ye here, while I shall pray.

33

And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy;

34

And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.

35

And he went forward a little, and fell on the ground, and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36

And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

37

And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter, Simon, sleepest thou? couldest not thou watch one hour?

καὶ ἔρχεται καὶ εὑρίσκει αὐτοὺς καθεύδοντας, καὶ λέγει τῷ Πέτρῳ· Σίμων, καθεύδεις; οὐκ ἰσχύσατε μίαν ὥραν γρηγορῆσαι;

И҆ прїи́де, и҆ ѡ҆брѣ́те и҆̀хъ спѧ́щихъ, и҆ гл҃а петро́ви: сі́мѡне, спи́ши ли; не возмо́глъ є҆сѝ є҆ди́нагѡ часа̀ побдѣ́ти;

38

Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

39

And again he went away, and prayed, and spake the same words.

40

And when he returned, he found them asleep again, (for their eyes were heavy,) neither wist they what to answer him.

41

And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

42

Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand.

John 10.9-16 § 36 (St Raphael)

St Raphael

9

I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

10

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

11

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

12

But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

13

The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

14

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

15

As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

16

And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
