The Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am your God. Be well pleasing before me and be blameless. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you greatly; and you will be the father of a multitude of nations. And your name will not be Abram, but your name will be Abraham, because I have established you as father of many nations. And I will increase you very greatly, and I will establish you for nations, and kings will come from you. And I will establish my covenant between me and you and between your seed after you for their generations as an eternal covenant, and I will be their God.’ And Abraham fell on his face and worshipped the Lord. And God said to Abraham, ‘You are to keep my covenant, you and your seed after you to their generations. before the mountains were settled, and before all hills, he begets me.

The Lord made countries and uninhabited [tracks], and the highest inhabited parts of the world.

The lips of just men drop grace: but the mouth of the ungodly is perverse.

Chapter 11

1

False balances are an abomination before the Lord: but a just weight is acceptable unto him.

ΖΥΓΟΙ δόλιοι βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, στάθμιον δὲ δίκαιον δεκτὸν αὐτῷ.

Wherever pride enters, there will be also disgrace: but the mouth of the lowly meditates wisdom.

οὗ ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ ὕβρις, ἐκεῖ καὶ ἀτιμία· στόμα δὲ ταπεινῶν μελετᾷ σοφίαν

И҆дѣ́же а҆́ще вни́детъ досажде́нїе, та́мѡ и҆ безче́стїе: ᲂу҆ста́ же смире́нныхъ поꙋча́ютсѧ премꙋ́дрости.

When a just man dies he leaves regret: but the destruction of the ungodly is speedy, and causes joy. [See Appendix ]

ἀποθανὼν δίκαιος ἔλιπε μετάμελον, πρόχειρος δὲ γίνεται καὶ ἐπίχαρτος ἀσεβῶν ἀπώλεια.

Righteousness traces out blameless paths: but ungodliness encounters unjust dealing.

δικαιοσύνη ἀμώμους ὀρθοτομεῖ ὁδούς, ἀσέβεια δὲ περιπίπτει ἀδικίᾳ.

Пра́вда непоро́чнагѡ и҆справлѧ́етъ пꙋти̑, нече́стїе же впа́даетъ въ непра́вдꙋ.

The righteousness of upright men delivers them: but transgressors are caught in their own destruction.

δικαιοσύνη ἀνδρῶν ὀρθῶν ῥύεται αὐτούς, τῇ δὲ ἀπωλείᾳ αὐτῶν ἁλίσκονται παράνομοι.

Пра́вда мꙋже́й пра́выхъ и҆зба́витъ и҆̀хъ, безсовѣ́тїемъ же ᲂу҆ловлѧ́ютсѧ беззако́ннїи.

At the death of a just man his hope does not perish: but the boast of the ungodly perishes.

τελευτήσαντος ἀνδρὸς δικαίου οὐκ ὄλλυται ἐλπίς, τὸ δὲ καύχημα τῶν ἀσεβῶν ὄλλυται.

Сконча́вшꙋсѧ мꙋ́жꙋ првⷣнꙋ, не поги́бнетъ наде́жда: похвала́ же нечести́выхъ поги́бнетъ.

A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place.

δίκαιος ἐκ θήρας ἐκδύνει, ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ δὲ παραδίδοται ὁ ἀσεβής.

Првⷣный ѿ ло́ва ᲂу҆бѣ́гнетъ, въ негѡ́же мѣ́сто предае́тсѧ нечести́вый.

In the mouth of ungodly men is a snare to citizens: but the understanding of righteous men is prosperous.

ἐν στόματι ἀσεβῶν παγὶς πολίταις, αἴσθησις δὲ δικαίων εὔοδος.

In the prosperity of righteous men a city prospers: [See Appendix ]

A man void of understanding sneers at [his fellow] citizens: but a sensible man is quiet.

Verse: To Thee, O Lord, will I call. O my God, be not silent to me! (For St. Basil) Prokimenon, Tone 1: My mouth shall speak wisdom / and the meditation of my heart shall be understanding!

Brethren, Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. In Whom you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ: buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

My mouth shall speak wisdom / ^nd the meditation of my heart shall be understanding!

Verse: Hear this all ye people! Give ear all inhabitants of the world!

Brethren, such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once, when He offered up Himself. For the law makes men high priests which have infirmity, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, makes the Son, who is consecrated forever... And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.

And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.

И҆ є҆гда̀ бы́сть двоюна́десѧти лѣ̑тꙋ, восходѧ́щымъ и҆̀мъ во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мъ по ѡ҆бы́чаю пра́здника,

And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

καὶ τελειωσάντων τὰς ἡμέρας, ἐν τῷ ὑποστρέφειν αὐτοὺς ὑπέμεινεν Ἰησοῦς ὁ παῖς ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ, καὶ οὐκ ἔγνω Ἰωσὴφ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ.

и҆ сконча́вшымъ дни̑, и҆ возвраща́ющимасѧ и҆́ма, ѡ҆ста̀ ѻ҆́трокъ і҆и҃съ во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мѣ: и҆ не разꙋмѣ̀ і҆ѡ́сифъ и҆ мт҃и є҆гѡ̀:

But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.

νομίσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ εἶναι ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδὸν καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς συγγενέσι καὶ ἐν τοῖς γνωστοῖς·

мнѣ̑вша же є҆го̀ въ дрꙋжи́нѣ сꙋ́ща, преидо́ста днѐ пꙋ́ть, и҆ и҆ска́ста є҆го̀ во сро́дницѣхъ и҆ въ зна́емыхъ:

And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.

καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες αὐτὸν ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἱερουσαλὴμ ζητοῦντες αὐτόν.

и҆ не ѡ҆брѣ̑тша є҆го̀, возврати́стасѧ во і҆ерⷭ҇ли́мъ, взыска̑юща є҆го̀.

And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.

καὶ ἐγένετο μεθ᾿ ἡμέρας τρεῖς εὗρον αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καθεζόμενον ἐν μέσῳ τῶν διδασκάλων καὶ ἀκούοντα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπερωτῶντα αὐτούς·

И҆ бы́сть по трїе́хъ дне́хъ, ѡ҆брѣто́ста є҆го̀ въ це́ркви, сѣдѧ́щаго посредѣ̀ ᲂу҆чи́телей, и҆ послꙋ́шающаго и҆́хъ, и҆ вопроша́ющаго и҆̀хъ:

And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.

ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ συνέσει καὶ ταῖς ἀποκρίσεσιν αὐτοῦ.

ᲂу҆жаса́хꙋсѧ же всѝ послꙋ́шающїи є҆гѡ̀ ѡ҆ ра́зꙋмѣ и҆ ѡ҆ ѿвѣ́тѣхъ є҆гѡ̀.

And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.

καὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐξεπλάγησαν, καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ εἶπε· τέκνον, τί ἐποίησας ἡμῖν οὕτως; ἰδοὺ ὁ πατήρ σου κἀγὼ ὀδυνώμενοι ἐζητοῦμέν σε.

И҆ ви̑дѣвша є҆го̀, диви́стасѧ: и҆ къ немꙋ̀ мт҃и є҆гѡ̀ речѐ: ча́до, что̀ сотворѝ на́ма та́кѡ; сѐ, ѻ҆те́цъ тво́й и҆ а҆́зъ болѧ̑ща и҆ска́хома тебѐ.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?

καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· τί ὅτι ἐζητεῖτέ με; οὐκ ᾔδειτε ὅτι ἐν τοῖς τοῦ πατρός μου δεῖ εἶναί με;

И҆ речѐ къ ни́ма: что̀ ꙗ҆́кѡ и҆ска́ста менѐ; не вѣ́ста ли, ꙗ҆́кѡ въ тѣ́хъ, ꙗ҆̀же ѻ҆ц҃а̀ моегѡ̀, досто́итъ бы́ти мѝ;

And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.

καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐ συνῆκαν τὸ ρῆμα ὃ ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς.

И҆ та̑ не разꙋмѣ́ста гл҃го́ла, є҆го́же гл҃а и҆́ма.

And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

καὶ κατέβη μετ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Ναζαρέτ, καὶ ἦν ὑποτασσόμενος αὐτοῖς. καὶ ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ διετήρει πάντα τὰ ρήματα ταῦτα ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῆς.

И҆ сни́де съ ни́ма и҆ прїи́де въ назаре́тъ: и҆ бѣ̀ повинꙋ́ѧсѧ и҆́ма. И҆ мт҃и є҆гѡ̀ соблюда́ше всѧ̑ гл҃го́лы сїѧ̑ въ срⷣцы свое́мъ.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Καὶ Ἰησοῦς προέκοπτε σοφίᾳ καὶ ἡλικίᾳ καὶ χάριτι παρὰ Θεῷ καὶ ἀνθρώποις.

And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

καὶ καταβὰς μετ᾿ αὐτῶν ἔστη ἐπὶ τόπου πεδινοῦ, καὶ ὄχλος μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ πλῆθος πολὺ τοῦ λαοῦ ἀπὸ πάσης τῆς Ἰουδαίας καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ τῆς παραλίου Τύρου καὶ Σιδῶνος, οἳ ἦλθον ἀκοῦσαι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἰαθῆναι ἀπὸ τῶν νόσων αὐτῶν,

и҆̀же прїидо́ша послꙋ́шати є҆гѡ̀ и҆ и҆сцѣли́тисѧ ѿ недꙋ̑гъ свои́хъ, и҆ стра́ждꙋщїи ѿ дꙋ̑хъ нечи́стыхъ: и҆ и҆сцѣлѧ́хꙋсѧ.

And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

καὶ πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος ἐζήτει ἅπτεσθαι αὐτοῦ, ὅτι δύναμις παρ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐξήρχετο καὶ ἰᾶτο πάντας.

И҆ ве́сь наро́дъ и҆ска́ше прикаса́тисѧ є҆мꙋ̀: ꙗ҆́кѡ си́ла ѿ негѡ̀ и҆схожда́ше и҆ и҆сцѣлѧ́ше всѧ̑.

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπάρας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἔλεγε· μακάριοι οἱ πτωχοί, ὅτι ὑμετέρα ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ.

Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

μακάριοί ἐστε ὅταν μισήσωσιν ὑμᾶς οἱ ἄνθρωποι, καὶ ὅταν ἀφορίσωσιν ὑμᾶς καὶ ὀνειδίσωσι καὶ ἐκβάλωσι τὸ ὄνομα ὑμῶν ὡς πονηρὸν ἕνεκα τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.

χάρητε ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ σκιρτήσατε· ἰδοὺ γὰρ ὁ μισθὸς ὑμῶν πολὺς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ· κατὰ τὰ αὐτὰ γὰρ ἐποίουν τοῖς προφήταις οἱ πατέρες αὐτῶν.
