1 Corinthians 10:5–12 § 144

1 Corinthians 10:5–12 § 144

Brethren, with many of them God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. Neither be idolaters, as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; neither complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world have come… Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall…

Galatians 4:22–31 (St Anna) § 210ctr

Brethren, Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondmaid, the other by a free woman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh, and he of the free woman was by promise, which things are an allegory. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sínai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hágar—for this Hágar is Mount Sínai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written: “Rejoice, thou barren, that bearest not! Break forth and shout, thou that travailest not! For the desolate has many more children than she which has a husband”… Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.” So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free…

Matthew 16.6-12 § 66

Matthew 16.6-12 § 66

6

Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

7

And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

8

Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?

γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ὀλιγόπιστοι, ὅτι ἄρτους οὐκ ἐλάβατε;

Разꙋмѣ́въ же і҆и҃съ речѐ и҆̀мъ: что̀ мы́слите въ себѣ̀, маловѣ́ри, ꙗ҆́кѡ хлѣ́бы не взѧ́сте;

9

Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

οὔπω νοεῖτε, οὐδὲ μνημονεύετε τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους τῶν πεντακισχιλίων καὶ πόσους κοφίνους ἐλάβετε;

не ᲂу҆̀ ли разꙋмѣ́ете, нижѐ по́мните пѧ́ть хлѣ́бы пѧти́мъ ты́сѧщамъ, и҆ коли́кѡ кѡ́шъ взѧ́сте;

10

Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?

οὐδὲ τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους τῶν τετρακισχιλίων καὶ πόσας σπυρίδας ἐλάβετε;

ни ли се́дмь хлѣ́бы четы́ремъ ты́сѧщамъ, и҆ коли́кѡ ко́шницъ взѧ́сте;

11

How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

πῶς οὐ νοεῖτε, ὅτι οὐ περὶ ἄρτου εἶπον ὑμῖν προσέχειν ἀπὸ τῆς ζύμης τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων;

ка́кѡ не разꙋмѣ́ете, ꙗ҆́кѡ не ѡ҆ хлѣ́бѣхъ рѣ́хъ ва́мъ внима́ти, (но) ѿ ква́са фарїсе́йска и҆ саддꙋке́йска;

12

Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

16

No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.

17

For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad.

18

Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.

19

Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press.

20

And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.

21

And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.
